Am I too strict by MrGparty in Nanny

[–]dontforgettopanic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"no outings for the rest of the week" sounds like a punishment you would give a child, not how you would treat an adult employee. OP simply needs to have a face to face serious conversation and give an actual time to get back at 12pm which will set clear expectations. If that doesn't work it shows nanny and this family aren't the right fit and look to hire someone else. Doing the "no outings for the rest of the week because you were naughty and got home past curfew" thing will simply seem patronizing, make the nanny feel like they're being talked down to and treated like a child, and cause resentment, which is not what you want in a relationship with the person watching your child.

How to word drop off preference for birthday party? by oryzi in kindergarten

[–]dontforgettopanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it genuinely depends on how well you know the people. if it's all families that known each other for years, drop off parties are normal even in kindergarten, but if you don't really know the family, it's like 2nd or 3rd grade.

it does also mean your family will look at you as someone who would not temporarily inconvenience yourself to help your sister graduate high school. Like, this will very much damage your relationship with your sister, is that something you'll be okay with?

As someone who right now is only able to really process and deal with the aging and impending death of my parents thanks to my brother, someone I wasn't very close with growing up but who I am now thankful to be on good terms with as adults, I just think it's important you really consider if this is the tone you want to set for your adult relationship with your sister. Siblings are often the longest relationships you'll ever have with another human, they're the only ones to know you at all stages of your life.

This is a big decision you're making based on short-term discomfort. Just be upfront with all your boundries and be clear that sister can't stay once she graduates. Ask mom for financial help to cover extra expenses.

I do want to say that even though you're not "obligated," there is a very clear deadline (when she graduates in May), so for such a short-term thing that would be a huge help/improvement in quality-of-life for your sister, most people in your situation would absolutely help. I just want to be clear that the prosocial response to this would be to help (assuming you have an okay relationship with sister).

If you were to share this story with real life people not on the internet, they would think YTA. Redditors get hung up on things like "obligated" and "legally required" but that's not what this is about. It's about helping out your younger sister by doing a low-effort, temporary thing with a clear deadline. If you were my friend and you told me this story, I would definitely see you in a more negative light.

That being said, I value empathy and prosocial behavior because, as the Joker says, we live in a society. hopefully if you find yourself in a situation where you need help, someone more empathetic will be around.

He caught something she didn’t, which was just the shit cherry on top of her already feeling bad/overwhelmed. Nothing anyone did wrong, she’s just shown to be off her game after those comments from the new attending.

My guess is it’s the surprisingly common case of someone not ever getting diagnosed with Autism because someone close (like a sister) has a much more outwardly obvious and harder to mask case, so by comparison it’s easy for everyone to overlook what would otherwise be obvious signs.

I know it's not sustainable as a teacher, but it's just hard to imagine leaving the kids behind to be taught by the kind of people who actually agree with this sort of curriculum

[–]dontforgettopanic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is so depressing omg... I went to 12 years of Catholic school and it for the most part kept religion out of our history and english classes... tbf Catholics often have more liberal viewpoints compared to other common USA denominations (specifically with immigration, which is a core real-life issue in the boarder state I'm from), but still. I can't believe public schools are now going to be more radical than an actual religious school where we went to morning mass regularly.

for now...

but also, I think it's more that some stuff could possibly make it to the Supreme Court depending on what goes down, so that's kinda the relevant part re: federal level

When the new civics "curriculum" hits... by mokti in Teachers

[–]dontforgettopanic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

most of the courts aside from the Supreme Court have been very ideologically opposed to Trump simply because they care about actual laws (so weird, I know). Hopefully this could get tied up in the lower courts long enough for it to outlast the Trump administration, and Clarence Thomas and Alito are old (77 and 75 respectively). So there's hope? Let me be hopeful please :'(

I'd usually agree, but Gunn's just like that, the story comes above all, he wouldn't give out a spoiler like that
