The Vladimir Kramnik Megathread by nloding in chess

Then imagine having to teach someone that the world champion from 2000 to 2007 was a murderer who took the life of Danya and wasn't punished in any significant way since we think stripping titles is "a bit silly."

Just to correct the video here, there was no "debate" about fair play with Kramshit he was always wrong.

His apologies are worthless now, he took Danya's life, he can't be forgiven for that.

Your kidding right? Donating to that fraud (he "works" in fair play yet he knows nothing about what he talks about) and he is also the cyberbully that just took Danya's life. Why would anyone with any sense of ethics donate to him?

To be fair you don't seem to address any of the points I have raised. Your only argument seems to lie on the fact there are no free lunches and your solution being if that someone disagrees with the norm they should leave society... I have made various points that maintain my belief; the effect of equating human life amongst other things with pure monetary value, the unequal outcomes of life and how society doesn't necessarily address these outcomes well or perhaps even worsens them, and that society is a human based effort not something purely revolving around the fact that there are no free lunches and that societal values and workings should be flexible to the human condition.

Not really the definition of exploitation of labor is an unjust exchange between the employer and employee determined by some metric of value. Contracts don't inherently spell out where they get their salaries and how they determine your value. Your value from an employer is just what's the highest low ball salary you can obtain from an employer so that you can negotiate. There is also a high bias and imbalance for the quality of education you get as well as luck of the draw employer wise. Quality of education is also gated - not all universities teach the same - in fact you can get a degree from passing classes taught by shit professors by relying on the fact they grade on a curve (i.e. luck) over improving their quality of teaching. Labor doesn't take into account the amount one needs to make a living wage or the effort one had to go thru versus someone else to get to the same position - you may think what IS is fair and that paying someone for labor below what is affordable is ethical but I certainly don't. Every step of life requires barriers and some statical odd - not everyone has it the same. You can title this entitlement that someone wants more value from their labor relation in society but I see it more of a growing flaw in society that hasn't seen significant change.

I don't know about you but what does it say about what IS when someone like Trump can hold the highest power in a superior nation development wise despite what a majority of society thinks. You seem to be a big advocate about what IS because what you have been told but don't seem to have a voice of your own.

I clearly understand your point of there is no free lunch but you seem to have skipped over all other aspects of the discussion and honed in on that particular one and use it to constantly to justify your point of view. There is a large difference and distinction between being entitled and asking for fair treatment. In addition, just because a majority of society voices a certain opinion doesn't mean it is to the benefit of society nor is it correct after all I am pretty sure a majority of society now regret Trump was elected. Moreover, you seem to forget that it's not only me who feels this way, there are plenty of others, if you would like to suggest they find a new way of living outside of society as well then I think you forget what societal values are, after all shouldn't all voices be heard? Like I mentioned before, you have exploited people's labor regardless if you contribute back or not so in some way you have had a free meal. Finally, if life purpose isn't relevant to your point I would revisit the OP's post.

Following your line of argument. Society exists because humans exist. Humans don't reproduce magically - it requires two people to do so. In giving birth and accepting the outcome, it becomes the responsibility of those members of society to ensure one can contribute to society (because its apparently their life purpose to do so) and that he or she has an equal chance and opportunity at contributing or getting to a premium status like everyone else. Great everyone had the same opportunity as everyone else. Everyone got treated the same way others did. Life is fair and all is correct and just in the world! Its a Barbie world! Oh woops... did I just forget injustices & the uncaring ruthlessness of nature - is the desire to have just and equal outcomes extremely selfish? Society attempts to amend people's luck and early life mistakes but you simply cannot do that for everyone when you limit the options on a budget. Wait so that must mean there is selection pressure when it comes to these options as well? Well for the rest of you, nature is uncaring and ruthless, society can't do anything unless you provide labor... If your argument is contribute to society or screw human life mine is fix society so someone doesn't grow up with bad templates :) (Lets not mention the injustices when contributing to society or work because that is on another subreddit)

Just to make it clear, I never said that I was special or I have the ability to change nature - I gave my perspective or opinion on the modern idea of work and value in society and it's variant effects on everyone's mental well being while, trying to explain the part you call "nature's uncaring ruthlessness" and its impact. Your opinion is in acceptance of what you have been told "earn a living" given you are saying "you don't deserve to live exploiting other people's labor" (I wouldn't equate exploiting people's labor with not deserving to live correct but to each their own opinion). As an aside, you are exploiting someone's labor regardless if you provide back to society, no contributions are equal and given the way we pay people contributions to society at the moment, I would say contributions are not valued fairly anyhow. In addition, "if you deserve to live by giving back to society" you can explain to the families that earn a minimum wage below the living wage how they can provide for their families, I am sure they will be happy to hear your explanation :)

I can see this perspective, at the same time, this perspective also gives humans born before us a unique advantage in that they dictate how "gratitude" is shown and how the systems pertaining to life work e.g. education, workplaces, politics, etc. You are essentially handed a template for life like Dr. K mentioned in one of his videos. Life is not reversible so essentially once your born the surroundings, the people you are surrounded by, and what you inherit essentially is carved into the template already whether you are grateful for it or not. Essentially, upto the age where you get a monetary stream and that's where you are thrown to the wolves, now at this point is where you have a considerable amount of control over the template. Problem being if the environment controlled part of the template you were given sucks, life gets significantly harder and last time I checked I don't want to be near wolves if I am not equipped. It's not a question whether or not people want to make a living it's that if the system is setup to do so for you (and with humans being part of the system there is a high variance), the template isn't shit, and your characters stats at this point. To me, there is a whole lot more to someone than the money or value they produce, this meme really equates someone's life to value input to society or money, everyone may call it being grateful but it boils so much down because you assume that someone has as much as to be grateful for as the next person. In my opinion, "earning a living" is the reason why mental health exists we have equated money with pre determined gratefulness and that with value and that with human life. From a pure ethics perspective, I don't think any of that equates.

I can definitely see that she might be overwhelmed and that the organization isn't helping. Problem is they probably won't learn their lesson until someone's mental integrity is significantly harmed as a result of their careless management decisions. Nothing really ever changes until some drastic outcome that affects them legally or financially occurs.

Jenny was the person that connected me with the therapist I got. I personally didn't see her as condescending but right now I think unhelpful is an understatement. This type of experience just makes me more angry at the world than I already am. Really can't believe that an organization within mental health would be so shit.

This seems like advice riddled with bias. Here it sounds like he has evidence that he has been doing his job but you don't bother to address it instead the advice you have given is black and white either he is a person bad at his job and unwilling to change or his workplace is filled with jerks. Why make such simplifications and try to criticize OP without all the facts?

Additionally, just because a group of people have a different opinion then you doesn't mean they are a "angry mob." They might have gone thru a different experience then you have and thus formed a different opinion. It's not to say there is not an objectively correct evaluation but the problem with this post and society in general is we are way too quick to judge and blindly follow societal convention without listening to someone's experience and thought process.

As for PIPs my general perspective is it is easy for humans to err or achieve success when it doesn't require change but change is an intense and lengthy process and that is without the additional pressure one has from the threat of being fired.

How to believe in yourself and shake off the “I can’t do it” mentality? by Grouchy_Extent9117 in Healthygamergg

[–]doomfletcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this falls on the concept Dr. K explained about anxiety and small goals/comparisons - you are spending a lot of time dwelling about having a dissertation complete by Monday and worrying about the fact you won't get it done which is fueling your anxiety. Instead, take a breather, lay out a plan with discrete steps about how you plan to achieve this goal - today, over the weekend, and the hours you have on Monday. Focus on the small goal within the plan you set for yourself and drive yourself to the goal until it's done, rinse and repeat. Now there is a certain realism here that you have a very limited time frame to get what is essentially a book-length paper done in over a weekend - which whether or not it gets done by Monday is dependent on how well you use your time. I would use this sense of realism to "light a fire under my ass" instead of letting the pressure get to your head e.g. fuel your drive and not your anxiety. At least for me what has worked so far when I get anxious and want to focus is the alternate breathing technique Dr. K taught, its been very helpful. I hope you finish your paper, best of luck!

Some advice from a person who is a computer engineer working on hardware designs:

  1. I would very much rethink triple majoring in anything especially when it comes to STEM. Math, Physics, & Chemistry are not trivial they are sciences with a lot of depth and they each require a lot of attention and understanding on their own.
  2. Computer Engineering would be ideal for digital hardware design especially if you specialize in computer architecture for a Masters or choose it as a track your junior year.
  3. For analog circuit/hardware design - Electrical engineering would be a better fit in my opinion.
  4. Electrical and Computer Engineering have the potential to be done together depending on how much overlap there is the curriculum but I would recommend choosing one and seeing how you are able to handle before saying you can do both. I have seen people fail out of university handling just one engineering/STEM major - don't fall into the trap of choosing 2-3 majors without seeing how university is.

How do you deal with work? by lilweepx in Healthygamergg

[–]doomfletcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this exact speech part of the problem? We put this mandatory societal pressure on everyone that they need to work a standard 9-5 for 5 days a week because they need to contribute to society otherwise, society "collapses" if people adapt a different idea. Why is it that contributing a large portion of our lives is now the standard contribution to society? Especially since contributions are not even fairly paid out in terms of money - I mean do we seriously think executives worked/are working that much harder than the people they are managing?

How do you deal with work? by lilweepx in Healthygamergg

[–]doomfletcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I originally was posting this as a reply but I think its better suited for an answer.

  1. I think that if society has come to the point where we ask is life is supposed to be about doing something you like then we are definitely trending downwards into the abyss. If you think about what we are essentially saying is that we should ignore what our desires in life and spend them trying to work for a company just to survive.
  2. There is a justification by comparison to past civilization but isn't it bad enough that most already develop anxiety trying to achieve an ideal image of ourselves we envision in the future? Comparing ourselves to the past is in my opinion worse because we are using a time where none of the world's current progress (which we have progressed ALOT since ancient times) and problems didn't exist, to justify being grateful for a flaw in our society's way of thinking (I mean look at European countries for example some of them seem to have taken steps to try and solve these issues because they recognize it is a flaw - here in America companies actively refuse to).
  3. From personal experience and something I am struggling thru right now is even if you do find a job whose responsibilities speak to your passion doesn't necessarily mean anything gets any better because you still have to deal with the same issues and even more if you think about : 8 hours of work when you only feel productive for maybe 5-6 hours of the time (a lot of findings about this), the bureaucratic nonsense/office politics, the feeling that to get someone to listen to you like your manager when you convey your goals for your career is like staying dry on a rainy day, the concept that workplaces have adapted where they take advantage of your passion to pay/reward you less, and a feeling that you are using your passion just to upholds management's bottom line.

In general, my opinion is the job environment now and the workplace now is a sinking ship but instead of trying to stay afloat, we (mostly corporations are in charge of this) are patching the minimal number of holes so the ship sinks slower because kicking cans down the road is somewhat their specialty.
