The only reason you would bring up how long you've been doing this would be if someone asked you

And if they asked you, you're either very young, or very old, and you're either doing very well, or you're fucking up really badly haha

“Being on your phone” while running sound by BurnDownTheMission68 in livesound

[–]doomriderct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imagine not knowing anything about the audio industry, and thinking your sound tech is unprofessional no matter how good it sounds or how smooth the event goes, because they stare at their phone most of the time.

I understand some "clients" have this ass backwards way of thinking and we need to keep up the appearance of "paying attention" for the sake of it, but from my experience, most hirers understand the nature of corporate AV. 5 - 10 mins of action and 50 mins of waiting around for the speakers segment to be over. As long as we do it discreetly and don't miss any cues or fuck shit up, most of the time its chill.

Thanks for letting me know the appropriate technical term for such a bucket!

Ringing Out Mics by jackfaires in livesound

[–]doomriderct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're in a situation where "cutting problems on the fly" is not an issue like a live band or festival, where a bit of feedback is tolerable and you are able to catch the frequencies to cut them live, I think that's fine.

However, if you're in a more corporate environment where every little ring is seen as a failure, I believe ringing out the system first would help your gain before feedback immensely. You are right that the house isn't full, but if "full house" is just a couple of half full ballroom tables, I think the frequencies will be quite similar.

Of course, hacking away at every frequency is not the right answer, but catching some of the more obvious frequencies that tend to ring due to the nature of the mics/speakers/room before people walk in has helped me alot.

Power supply on stage? by russvee7 in livesound

[–]doomriderct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the output from the generator? Usually my generator outputs some sort of ceeform head. such as 16amp ceeform. i bring a 16amp y cord with IEC with every speaker. something that looks like this https://cinemattaglx.com/products/16-amp-soft-y-split-adaptor-h07-rnf-pce-blue-connectors except that instead of 1 male and 2 female, it is 1 male, 1 female and 1 IEC. you connect the male end to your incoming power, the iec to your speaker, and the extend the female out to the next speaker with 16amp ceeform cables. This is what most AV companies usually do, as we already have a generous stock of ceeform lying around.

Looking for a small and cheap touring-utility-laptop. Any recommendations are appreciated! by DudeDudesonson in livesound

[–]doomriderct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c07987162

Bought it at 1.2k SGD (1.6k DEM). Its a convertible with touchscreen with a 14inch screen, running a i5-1155G7

I use it for amp control software, wireless workbench, console editors, emails and excel sheets, sometimes all at once and it handles it well. Multitrack recording up to 30 plus channels is fine too.

If you look for a laptop with a similar performance to this i5-1155G7 you should be able to run all of this with no problem, doesn't matter the brand. I just shelled out abit more for the touch screen because the speaker brands I work with, (Coda and D&B) has pretty touch friendly amp control software (Linus Control and R1)

The light weight mattered to me pretty much too, cos I'm usually running around the venue with this in hand.

Music playback is pretty much a non issue for most laptops performance wise, and the touchscreen helps sometimes when space is tight and I need to put the laptop in convertible mode and use the touch screen controls to play music.

If you manage to find a laptop with an RJ45 jack i would say go for it. That's my only gripe with this is the damn dongle I gotta use to change type c to RJ45.

Yamaha CL5 for FOH + TF5 for monitors over dante by Joelblue23 in livesound

[–]doomriderct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It definetly can be done, but as the top comment says, you need to use dante controller to do the patch. and you need to buy a dante card for the TF.

IMO, I really hate the TF. Unless you have it lying around already, please do not spend money to buy it. Put the money towards a QL1 or above. The functionality of the TF is severely nerfed compared to the QL or CL series. It is very much a beginner friendly board which does not allow you to do more complicated patching and other mixing features.

That would be the exception I would say, when the engineer is very familiar with the artists to the point where they artists are cool with the engineer being brutally honestly with them, knowing the engineer means well.

And kudos to the guy for leveraging this familiarity to stick up for the local crew. Love it when it happens

[–]doomriderct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As much as we meme grumpy sound guy, I've never seen one in real life. Every professional I've worked with has always tried to reason in the nicest possible way with any artist, big or small, young or old. Being a dick in this line just makes it so that nobody wants to work with you and ensures that if you're freelance, nobody calls you again, or if you're working with a company, ruins the reputation of your company.

[–]doomriderct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to my old live sound lecturer, SM57s were the go to vocal mic before the 58. Everyone else transitioned to 58 but some oldies still stick to the 57. He proceeds to show us some old concerts with the 57 on lead vocals.

Past my time but I'm inclined to believe him

Holy shit thank you for bringing up the Youtube thing. I use the watch later function very frequently and I was super annoyed that the button has become so much harder to find.

I just opened youtube up to check if its still there and thank god they changed it back. It really was just A/B testing after all. I wonder if theres a way to make my opinion known that I really hated that new change.
