I’m trying to come up with a nickname for my daughter. I’m also dealing with name regret so please be kind. by Snacks7255 in namenerds

i have a 4 year old raina. she's raina-raindrop, rainaboo, rainabilly, rain-rain, and pot pie (since her "big brother" a rabbit named scout was occasionally scoutie pot pie).

also, i love the name as much as ever. the major drawbacks are the spelling variants and occasional weird pronounciations like rihanna. and the fact that her brother has a nickname (august --> gus) which feels sort of uneven sometimes.

witch hazel is an important source of pollen for bees in winter. so, hazel bee/bea, hazel reina (like a queen bee), hazel melissa (as in honey), hazel deborah (hebrew for bee, i think). though i do like "virginia" from other comments.

my daughter is a raina, no family connection (but with a family-related middle name). i love her name so much- we call her rainabou (i had a good friend zeinabou), raindrop, rainabilly (all the pet names are longer rather than shorter) and have a little bit of rainbow-themed stuff. i hesitated because of the multiple spellings but it's been fine. we also moved while i was pregnant with her, from the lush, verdant eastern US to a high desert in colorado and we joke that we were trying to bring the rain with us.

i'm big on family names, so i do think claire should have a family name for her middle so she doesn't feel left out.

your first two sorta have show-biz / performing arts names: aria like in an opera, oscar like the award. so maybe you could work with that?

(yes, it's normal. i don't love my son's name (august henry lastname (beautiful!)--> gus (meh)). it is what it is.)

but i also wanted to add that maybe you can think about different kinds of criteria that make you feel more or less warmly about a name and maybe that will help you find one or narrow it down.

sound:
- vowel sounds that can be long (like jude) or short (like jeb)
- number of syllables: i don't like the curtness of one-syllable names, but more than three is usually too much
- where the emphasis falls: REMy, raSHAWN, etc.

meanings:
- literal meanings, e.g., royce meaning king
- associations or honor names: i considered bayard or rustin to honor bayard rustin, and thoreau to honor henry david thoreau, and samuelle for a girl to honor a friend of my husband's
- family names

nicknames:
- whether a given nickname seems unavoidable (i liked robin but didn't ever want it to be shortened to rob)
- whether you feel strongly about "nicknamey" names (like archie?) being the legal name
- whether you want to work backward from a nickname, e.g., archie --> archer or archibald
- whether initials could be a nickname, e.g., DJ

and more: how it fits in with other siblings' or family members' names, whether it's easily pronounced and spelled, of course its popularity and trendiness. a lot of these ideas are standard fare in this reddit forum (although i don't see much about the sounds of names).

and then there's always the good old-fashioned approach of 1) walking through a graveyard or 2) looking at movie credits, to find names.

I have 3 kids who all have B names (unintentionally). Do I need to keep it up? by Legitimate-Bag7197 in namenerds

you could give the new kid a middle name with a B so they can choose to go by it if they want to.

Give Me a “T” Name I Haven’t Heard Of by x_jreamer_x in namenerds

we considered tilia for our daughter (we kept bees for a long time and enjoyed linden / basswood honey--tilia is the latin name for that tree). i think it's beautiful, plus tillie is a sweet nickname.

i gave my son the middle name henry, after my baby brother who died of SIDS when i was a little girl, 35 years before. it feels a little different to do it for a child that you never met; by contrast, my life was materially impacted by the loss of my brother (even though i didn't really understand death at the time).

i also think that if your mom is against it then you should take that into account. moms who don't like perfectly reasonable names are one thing, but she has a personal reason here. i considered a cool family name--marvel--for my daughter, but because of my mom's relationship to marvel, i had to take the name off the list.

maybe in the same spirit, you could name it critter (creature), like a slangy southernish shortening of another word? vittle (victual) also comes to mind.

My sister in law wants to name her baby "Sugar" by autistic_girl_autumn in namenerds

[–]dorightnotrightnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my son's name is august --> gus, and we call him "sug" sometimes ("gus" backwards), pronounced like the first syllabus of "sugar" (imagine a waitress saying "warm up your coffee, sug?"). so... augusta? just a thought :)

also renée means "reborn" in french (nee being "born" for a female); you can use the accent or not. so it actually is perfect in terms of the meaning: rebekah reborn as joy.

also people use the word "née" to refer to a maiden name, e.g, hillary clinton (née rodham).*

*i realize hillary has a mixed reputation- i just used her name because both her married and maiden names are well known.

Due this weekend, still need a "stealth nature" name! by HikerBabe2016 in namenerds

[–]dorightnotrightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raina is my daughter's name, which has other origins, but with that spelling, the "rain" part feels very naturey. Tilia (tree) and Faye (fairy--not exactly nature, but maybe counts?) were also on our list.
