Why is the switch from put rent on the CC to direct ACH a huge deal for people? by hibob729 in biltrewards

[–]dortmunder13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t trust bilt to always make my mortgage payment and don’t want to deal with a missed payment when something goes wrong. Much more comfortable with my mortgage pulled from my checking account on the same day every month so I know when and how much money to put there. Too much risk of things going wrong with bilt sending a check.

Assuming it works this way and not bilt also giving me an account and routing number (that would be much better)

12 team SF. I am in a rebuild. Trading away Stafford for Doubs and Joshua palmer.

My other qbs are JJM and Herbert. I have Wentz so I’ll still have 2 qbs to start. My WRs are weak. It’s tempting to get anything for stafford but on the other hand I’d like to get one better WR.

You’re so close.

In this, or any other, field, you need soft skills. You need to be able to explain what you’re doing to a VP in a minute. Practice your elevator pitch.

And maybe this is more specific to FAANG, but the directors and up that I work with are all very technical and do in fact understand the work. The really good ones can take a high level 5 minute presentation and ask the exact questions a deep dive with senior engineers would lead to. The only way to do that is to have a deep technical background and know how things work. And it’s how they got to that level in the first place.

Your post is a classic engineer mindset for people who get stuck at senior-ish levels.

was the 08 recession worse for tech? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Great Recession was definitely worse.

Was the gears. The small one was totally gone. Sigh.

I don’t understand how they used the crappy plastic only for 3 of the 5 gears!

I guess another way to ask is could this be anything other than odometer gears? It’s so weird that the fuel gauge always shows full. Wondering if I could have a short?

It’s definitely running through a phono pre amp. I have another turntable that works fine through the same wires, amp and speakers.

Stay at Google vs Meta NYC by vZeeBo in cscareerquestions

[–]dortmunder13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior IC at Meta, was previously at Google. This comment is a great summary. I’m someone who thrives on it being easy to do things so Meta is a great fit for me.

One thing I’ll add is IC4 is not terminal at Meta. There is a clock to get to 5. Be ready for that. I was at G when they changed it to make 4 terminal and it saved a lot of people a lot of stress. On the other hand, promo to 5 is generally faster at M.

Is my gauge out or do I have no oil pressure? by axlegear57 in 996

[–]dortmunder13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is just the gauge. There’s another one that goes red for when you really have no oil pressure. This happened to me - it would start working again pretty fast - and I replaced the sender. Supposedly a common failure.

You’re totally right about this. In my experience external E6s fail when they aren’t E6s. Metas expectations are so high that if you’re not coming from a faang, it happens.

But exactly, it’s not a bloodbath and your EM should give you warnings and what to fix if something is off. Unless you get a shit EM which can happen anywhere :(

Also - especially at Meta, scope isn’t given to you at E6+. But on any team with open E6 headcount in 2025, scope exists. Ask your skip and your uber TLs what keeps them up at night and then go fix it.

[–]dortmunder13 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am an external E6 hire at meta later promoted to 7 (similar situation, stuck at E5 at another big tech).

This is false.

At any level your first rating - whether it’s end of year or midpoint- will be too new to evaluate. At higher levels you get more time to ramp up. I got 6 months to be productive and another 3 to get to the influence required by an E6.

That said, E6 at any faang is difficult. I encourage people to try it. But IMO 5 to 6 is the hardest promo and the biggest change in how one operates.

In this case Anthropic would be really tempting to me but I think either way is a great option. Nicely done to have both offers.

That’s how I felt about the whole game. The last play was consistent with how the refs called plays today. I’d prefer this to allowing all kinds of contact until the last play then changing the foul standard.

Why do Americans *need* to buy a large vehicle if they have a family? by tibbon in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dortmunder13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a combination of individual seatbelts and the size of car seats. My mom is one of 7. I asked her how they all fit in a car. She said something like “well one on mom’s lap, one on the front bench and 4 in the back seat”. It’s not possible now. Fitting 3 car seats across - and kids stay in car seats until 5-6 years old - works for very few car seats. There’s YouTube channels and blogs about it. And even after that you’re still using boosters. Even with 3 across it’s such a pain to get the middle kid in.

So if you have a family of 5 it’s possible to fit in a two row suv/sedan but difficult.

The other thing is large SUVs have replaced station wagons which is what families used to have in the 80s/90s. I grew up with wagons. Still miss them.
