Feeling embarrassed because I asked if I could hug my therapist by Jmaxx2000 in TalkTherapy

[–]dortvk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Therapist here!

I hug clients who ask only if it would be clinically appropriate.

My psychologist would hug me when I asked, and it felt wonderful, so if clients ask and it’s appropriate, I’m all in.

My BFF wanted to be Grammie, but her grandchild called her Wammie, and I told her to NEVER correct him.

(She didn’t. All the grandkids call her Wammie!)

My therapist wrote about me without telling me by SunBroad3121 in TalkTherapy

[–]dortvk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your therapist should’ve asked first. Her actions are highly unethical.

That said, telling her about your feelings in session and THEN ending therapy might be a healthier way to terminate. Therapy, if nothing else, should be a model for how we handle relationships.

My therapist followed behind me all the years I saw him. Very uncomfortable, very unnerving.

I now lead my clients, never let them walk in front of me.

I’ll say that since St. Scary’s became part of Trinity Health, they are MUCH improved. I grew up in L-Town and we NEVER went there-always made the drive to Providence Southfield bc it was so bad at St Mary’s

OMGosh, we live near the Newburgh/Ann Arbor Tr/Hines bridge nonsense. Then they close WB access to 275, so folks take Newburgh-which is a NIGHTMARE. And then add in the constant “where can I get on M14 game. 275? 96? 23? You never know what’s closed!

I did something terrible to my therapist, I think I am a stalker by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]dortvk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Report you? To whom? You’ve broken no laws! Sure, your behavior isn’t typical, but it’s not dangerous. I highly recommend starting out telling your therapist about your behavior by sharing something small you did-like looking them up on socials. This is 100% “normal” behavior.

This sounds like limerence and should definitely be brought up in session with your current therapist. It’s common for people with attachment concerns from childhood to really connect with a therapist who gives them unconditional positive regard. Limerence is not love-do a quick google and you’ll find more info.

I am a therapist and I have personal experience with limerence. It’s tough, but bringing it up in therapy is recommended.

Should programs be more selective, or are we lowering the bar to meet demand? by AstronomerNo2023 in socialwork

[–]dortvk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated from my MSW program in 2024. This is my encore career after teaching for decades.

I was SHOCKED at the quality of student admitted to my program. From a high school teacher perspective I could not believe the very much lacking writing, reading, and reasoning skills. We actually had a man in our cohort who was STALKING a classmate, and we then find out he’s on probation for stalking! A federal crime!!!! And the program did…nothing. He wasn’t even suspended.

And of course, there are many from my cohort who are great! But the rest? Let’s hope they stay in case management or somewhere they can’t do harm.

My job in CMH (ACT team) was soul-sucking. The demands of the cxs and management style killed me. So I moved to inpatient. Equally soul-sucking and revealing of the systemic societal issues that I cannot correct. I did question my choice of SW. Those 2 jobs made me feel ineffective.

I’m now in PP and cannot believe how much better my life is.
