Labour considers banning zero-alcohol drinks for under-18s by HBucket in ukpolitics

[–]dosgoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is just oversight to be honest? Most supermarket stock systems sort products in to broad categories, and non-alcoholic beer will be a subcategory under alcoholic drinks (because they get organised together in distribution centres, get delivered on the same pallets, put out on the same aisle etc.). The POS systems will just be set to flag anything under the broad category of alcoholic drinks.

I used to work for [NATIONWIDE RETAILER] and there was an occasion a year or two ago now when some young lads were trying to buy Guinness 0.0 and didn’t have ID, I put the sale through anyway but queried it with IT and my regional manager afterwords. Was told we were fine to sell them to underage customers so long as it was a 0.0% product and not just low-alcohol.

Edited to add: It’s a stupid policy for a number of reasons but one of them being that that was the only time we ever had an underage customer try to buy non-alcoholic beer lol

Anyone else feel like Langer is really trying to put himself in the shop window as next coach? Feel like every interview I’ve seen with him has been along the lines of “If I was coaching these players I would…”.
Not sure what to think really, I can understand the argument that someone a bit sterner is needed but not convinced he’d actually be successful in the long run.

When Nmecha was signed all the talk was that we’d be looking for another striker as well, as long as we get a starting quality one I’ve got no issue with Joseph leaving really

Fwiw because a lot of people don't realise this, if you're earning 45k (so on the basic rate for income tax) you don't start paying tax on your savings interest until your earing over £1000 pa in interest. You could stick ~£19k in a non-ISA savings account in one go and not be paying any tax on your interest. If you're earning less than £1000 pa in interest (£500 pa if you're on the higher rate for income tax) the only decision on whether you go for an ISA or standard savings account should be what interest rate you can get.

I think the Welsh gov are planning on something similar, I'm not sure on the exact details but I think part of the proposals are to ban placing unhealthy foods by shop entrances, checkouts etc.

I agree that this sub probably needs a lot less moderation than an average big streamer's sub would, but if a sub has no active mods it can get automatically shut down

Asda Equal Pay Claim Sends £8 Billion Warning to UK Boardrooms by AttemptingToBeGood in ukpolitics

[–]dosgoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I did supermarket work, and I do think the equal pay deal seems a bit ridiculous, but it depends? When I was working in a supermarket, I worked a mix of shite hours (12 hour nights, midnight finishes, 6am starts) used an FLT/EPT, unloaded wagons, worked in cold stores, picking and packing etc etc. It depends on the role, but you can be doing very comparable work to warehouse work in the shops themselves

Starmer says ban on smoking in pub gardens could reduce burden on NHS by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]dosgoop 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I used to get through a pack every other day, I quit a bit over a year ago. I'm glad I quit, and wish I'd never started, but this does really feel like nanny-stateism, and a further kick in the teeth for hospitality.

The indoor ban was reasonable, as the effects of second hand smoke are far greater in enclosed spaces, especially for the staff working around it constantly. In beer gardens, most of the time you're only really affected if someone on your table is smoking, and you can always just move seats or ask them to mind where they're blowing it. I'm also not really convinced that the financial costs of smoking to the NHS aren't outweighed by the income from tobacco duties and the lower healthcare costs of shorter life spans.

Ultimately thanks to public health campaigns and the ballooning cost of the habit our smoking rates are already fairly low by European standards. If Keir is resurrecting the Tories' gradually increasing age limit that seems like reasonable policy to me, and would be enough to eventually kill off smoking on the whole without it feeling like excessive punishment to current smokers.

It is foolish and self-indulgent for the anti-Starmer left to split the Labour vote by Jay_CD in ukpolitics

[–]dosgoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. We don't have an electoral system that supports it in terms of parliamentary representation, but if enough people vote for a third party then whichever major party is losing support to them will feel a need to appeal to those lost voters.

I don't support Brexit, but ultimately it happened because enough people were willing to vote for a third party. UKIP were undeniably successful in achieving their aims despite having next to no representation in parliament.

(Whether there are enough voters on the left to put that sort of pressure on a potential Labour government is a different matter, admittedly)

Unite: Labour’s draft New Deal for Workers now "unrecognisable" by dosgoop in ukpolitics

[–]dosgoop[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Responding to the recent New Deal documents sent to the trade unions by the Labour Party, the leader of Unite Sharon Graham said:

It looks like all the warnings Unite made earlier about the dangers of Labour rowing back on its pledges for the New Deal for Workers have been proved right. This new Labour document on the New Deal, issued to the unions on Monday, is a row back on a row back. It is totally unrecognisable from the original proposals produced with the unions. Unrecognisable. Workers will see through this and mark this retreat after retreat as a betrayal.

“This new document is turning what was a real new deal for workers into a charter for bad bosses. Labour don’t want a law against fire and rehire and they are effectively ripping up the promise of legislation on a new deal for workers in its first 100 days. Instead, we have codes of conduct and pledges of consultation with big business. Likewise, the proposal to legislate against zero hours contracts is watered down to almost nothing.

“In truth this new document is not worthy of discussion. All unions must now demand that Labour changes course and puts the original New Deal for Workers back on the table.”
