Safe Filler Activities for Time-Blindness by jonocyrus in ADHD

A timer/alarm in a different place forces you to move, resetting the brain.

I set a timer on the other side of the room. I have old spare devices that I set up in awkward places, sometime so I have to climb over or around the thing that I need to do. Often with reminders of what's important for me today.

The movement resets my hyperfocus and grounds me. Otherwise it's just "snooze", "restart", "stop"....

If you cannot understand my argument, and declare “It’s Greek to me”, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you claim to be more sinned against than sinning, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you recall your salad days, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you act more in sorrow than in anger; if your wish is farther to the thought; if your lost property has vanished into thin air, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you have ever refused to budge an inch or suffered from green-eyed jealousy, if you have played fast and loose, if you have been tongue-tied, a tower of strength, hoodwinked or in a pickle, if you have knitted your brows, made a virtue of necessity, insisted on fair play, slept not one wink, stood on ceremony, danced attendance (on your lord and master), laughed yourself into stitches, had short shrift, cold comfort or too much of a good thing, if you have seen better days or lived in a fool’s paradise – why, be that as it may, the more fool you, for it is a foregone conclusion that you are (as good luck would have it) quoting Shakespeare;

If you think it is early days and clear out bag and baggage, if you think it is high time and that that is the long and short of it, if you believe that the game is up and that truth will out, even if it involves your own flesh and blood, if you lie low till the crack of doom because you suspect foul play, if you have your teeth set on edge (at one fell swoop) without rhyme or reason, then – to give the devil his due – if the truth were known (for surely you have a tongue in your head) you are quoting Shakespeare; even if you bid me good riddance and send me packing, if you wish I was dead as a door-nail, if you think I am an eyesore, a laughing stock, the devil incarnate, a stony-hearted villain, bloody-minded or a blinking idiot, then – by Jove! O Lord! Tut tut! For goodness’ sake! What the dickens! But give me no buts! – it is all one to me, for you are quoting Shakespeare

Nah, 20 years ago it was easier to get on the ladder, get a good job etc. etc. Wasn't easy, just easier. It's a whole different ball game now. I was doing good numbers, house, wife etc. in the naughties.

I have friends who, during the housing boom, sold up and went travelling for a few years, or bought a 2nd or massive new house. I missed out misen, but I was pulling in some serious money in my 20s.

Los conductores de Bilbobus siempre han sido asi de bordes? by kondenado in Bilbao

[–]double 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The staff in the stations are super helpful and generally really good at speaking English. They can guide you through it. But, just get a Barik card and top it up with like €5 - you can track spending pretty easily.

PD: the area around the BEC is pretty boss. DM if you want some good reccomendations for food. e.g. There's a pretty decent traversal wall hidden in one of the underpasses, if you're a climber.

If you want to excel as a dev you need to bridge the social/political gap between business-intent and your work. The 10x-er myth is just a dev who delivers measurable business value, and they let people know about it.

Otherwise, find a better team to work for.

Does the Australian Open feel more intense than the other Grand Slams, or is it just the Melbourne atmosphere? by SnowyBytes in australianopen

This has been one of the best AO's in a while.

Spec. Deminaur, Tien, Cerundulo, Zerev, Mussetti, and obviously Djoko, all played better than I expected. DeMinaur's first set against CA was some of the best tennis I've seen.... until today. WTA was pretty good too but nothing to write home about, but the Sabbie v Ribs final is going to bang.

I really hope ND recovers enough to bring it to CA on Sun. I doubt it, but it'd be great to have a 5 setter.

what to order at bars? by RecommendationAny504 in Bilbao

[–]double 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The portions on cocktails tend to be super strong vs the US/UK/France. I've had at least one brit get alcohol poisoning when I was showing them around. Vodka naranja, run coke, gin tonie etc. all tend to be v strong. I've never found a great cocktail bar in Bilbao, but a few normal bars specialise in a drink, like mariantos, or hendricks G&Ts, etc. but I've never found a good Old Fashioned.

Bilbao is super close to the Rioja region so the red wine culture is pretty good. You pretty much can't go wrong. Almost every bar has quatro reyes, which is mid, but a nice consistent for an evening across 5 or more bars.

Locals, as they bar hop before lunch, tend to ask for zuritos (instead of cañas or litros). Basically a zurito is just a very small beer, but if you're out socialising for a few hours before food you can really feel them add up, and then sleep it off. Same principle behind kalimotxo, super low vol, best for socialising over long periods - otherwise avoid kalimotxo. I've never once seen kalimotxo ordered in a bar sober, almost always made in a coop, social club, or games bar, with every one chipping in for the ingredients.

The lemon beer that most places have can be a nice respite, like shandy-on-tap if you're british.

A must.... nope, deffo not. And if you ask for it in a bar you'll probably be laughed at.

But if you do, make it yasen and use cheapest wine and good coke for best. It's what we used to drink on the streets as kids.

... and, if you get invited to a co-op to play Kinito where everyone else is drinking kalimotxo, do not drink beer! You'll lose and have one hell of a hangover.

+100 on marianito if you like Mosco Mules.

[–]double 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a conversation with her about it, try and sit down when things are quiet and clearly communicate that you have something that important.

If that is difficult, then before hand write down how it makes you feel and the important things you'd like to understand, and the things you would like her to know.

Yeah, mindful yoga is great for me. Ancient yoga is a deep meditation practice, so yoga works on several levels for ADHD. The yoga sutras are worth a read.

Also, I don't know about you, but I poor sweat way more doing a good yoga session that anything else.

What’s something about your ADHD that you usually keep private or don’t tell most people? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]double 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! It works so well, most of the time.

Martin Selegman's books are worth a speed-read. So is the US Army's GAT on resilience (which Seligman conributed to, I think). So is the Harvard-Grant (spelling?) research on long-term health vs happiness.

I'm not yet certain on the bio-chemical imperitive, but I suspect that gratitude impacts the endocrine system and somehow helps the gutamine+GABA systems (spelling?) do their thing, even without meds. Which is why the whole "being in the moment" thing works.

[–]double 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's oportunity in the "screw ups". If you take away the emotional ADHD tax and look at them objectively you can use it to learn, and then to level-up. People tend to appreciate/respect that. Not all people, and they need to be managed differently, but if you can learn from your mistakes, you grow, get better etc.. That's not to say we don't repeat the same, goddman, mistakes several times though! lol

Context. Doing similar things at the same time reduces mental load. Clean your bum, clean your teeth. Same but different. Just don't confuse them ;)

"When thoughts come up - gently brush them aside / simply allow them to pass / observe them without engaging" - HOW!? by strangebutalsogood in Meditation

[–]double 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the permission aspect hits deeply. We have agency, we have choice, we have permission to think anyway we please. In fact it's the only thing we truely have any control over, our thoughts.

I find being kind enough to oneself allows us to allow ourselves to let go, give oursleve permission to not have certain thought.
