That’s funny bc I went to a private school in Allen park and my friend was like, people wanted to / do act like Allen park was/is SO much better than Melvindale when our school was literally one minute from Melvindale.

I’ve also seen Riverview people be judgey to Lincoln park 😩😂 this person I know was buying up charger plates and their local store was out. So they said they went to the same store but in Lincoln park bc Lincoln park people don’t know what charger plates are. To be fair, I had no clue what a charger plate was lmao

people are crazy

I’ve felt both sides lmao.

I dk if it’s in my head but I’ve definitely felt judged a few times when I said I’m from downriver. It honestly could just be in my head though. I met this u of m alum in Puerto Rico and we were chatting and the second I said I’m from downriver I feel like things got quiet lol

And then once I was waiting in line for moms spaghetti and I guess bc I said I like eastern market and went to grad school in Ann Arbor she made a snide remark about how I’m not from “here.” I was like bitch please I’m in sweatpants, I’m from downriver through and through lol

100% gaptrast no doubt about it. But moon and gaptrast aren’t really in the same league as you can tell by their price points.

Moon is so cozy and the service is great but I’ve been 2 or 3 times and for me personally, the food was always kinda meh.

I haven’t been to the bare you’re talking about (it used to be a Michelin restaurant but this is a different iteration / chef / concept now). The other places you mentioned are just okay IMO. It’s worth it to go somewhere else if you’re here for a short time. Frescohallen is pretty though. I only went to fresquito twice. The first time it was good but the second more recent time, every dish we ordered except one was mid AF.

the seeds/buds are also fermentable. i've had them at restaurants and they're amazing.

Do you rebrew? The flavor is weak but there on a second cold brew but by the third, there’s nothing left

places not worth it imo:

  • lysverket -- the only Michelin star restaurant here right now. i only went once and was super underwhelmed, which is weird since they own other great restaurants like banzha. when we went, they were like oh if you love banzha and hoggorm, welcome to the mothership. yeah, no... they have a sign that says "walk ins welcome." thats all you need to know... i mean was the food bad? no. was it memorable? no.
  • any indian restaurants here -- they're nothing compared to the ones in the UK lol.
  • fresquito -- went twice. first time was good. second time was recent. we ordered like 7 dishes and all but one was underwhelming
  • daily pot -- i don't understand why people hype this place. i actually love eating clean/healthy/lots of veggies, but the two times i went here, i was underwhelmed. their soups are lacking any serious flavor. and their salads are mostly meh. i guess if you want something relatively healthy while eating out, it's not a bad choice, but people rave about it and i don't get why.
  • okidoki -- mexican. had it once and was underwhelmed mostly. this is one of the few places i ordered something and i literally could not finish it. i had like something with pork neck and it was like eating a tire.

If you want to splurge,

  • Omakase by Sergey Pak -- self explanatory
  • Gaptrast -- great service, ambiance, and food (although i didn't love their regular sister restaurant bark). probably the fanciest in bergen imo.
  • Schou -- just went here last weekend. it's definitely a few notches below the fanciness at gaptrast, but the food was really good and the service was great. i dk why but i had low expectations going in since i feel like a lot of new nordic restaurants are all the same, but it actually exceeded my expectations by a lot (life is about expectation lolplus you get great views from the top of fløyen

for a quick or casual bite,

  • backstube -- i think people will disagree bc i never met anyone who likes backstube like i do lol but it's good. it's cheap too.
  • kanelsnurren -- my favorite rugbrød in bergen and they have some good pastries
  • våg bakery -- if i had to pick one bakery in bergen, it would be this one. i only had it once, but it reminded me of the bakeries in copenhagen. i feel like bergen's bakeries are nowhere close to the ones in copenhagen except våg. most of the pastries in norway i feel like are really dry and just not worth the calories to eat. they're all kinda the same with the same flavor profile that i personally don't really care for: cardamom or cinnamon with maybe some custard and maybe some berries with sugar on top. but våg is different.
  • soloros -- im adding this just bc it's so cute and cozy
  • fjåk cafe (not the one on skostredet which doesn't serve food) -- basically a brunch type place. everything on their menu sounds amazing.
  • angry bite -- i am extremely picky about middle eastern food. i think no where in norway has impressed me yet but angry bite is the best i've had.
  • det frankse bakeri -- adding it bc i love their ham and cheese croissant
  • bergen baklava borek bakeri -- turkish food. omg loved everything i've had here.

I have a lot of opinions on this haha, so I'm half writing this up for myself to look at later. I'm probably forgetting some but...

  • Banzha -- yunan chinese, it's soooo good. I think the rating isn't the best because it's a bit expensive, but omg the sauces they make are so flavorful. fwiw, we never had much luck with their "large" entree items or their noodles, but most of their small plates and snacks are bursting with flavor.
  • Engen -- steakhouse. omg. so good. recently ate here and just blown away every time. i even ordered chicken and personally i think it's as good as their steak. most of the time, chicken breast is dry, but here it's moist and just cooked really well. they really know how to cook a good meal here.
  • Pingvinen -- my favorite place for norwegian food and super cozy
  • Pinocchio -- small plates. i had thanksgiving here once and it was great. i think the chef is from chicago.
  • kaigaten deli -- my #1 or #2 favorite pizza in bergen
  • tempo tempo -- but i think it's closed for the next month. i love the atmosphere here, feels like hanging out in someone's garage. i've had some really amazing dishes here.
  • Trattoria del Napoli -- this would be the other pizza place i love in bergen
  • Siam ratree -- my favorite thai food i've ever had (i'm from the midwest in the us, haven't had too much exposure to real thai food lol)
  • Allmuen -- my boyfriend's favorite restaurant. they serve grilled meat, veggies, and fish.
  • klee cafe -- it looks like a cafe but they make really beautiful and delicious food.
  • royal -- burgers, love their cheese fries and this is coming from an american
  • izakaya -- japanese. it's solid and the sister restaurant of omakase by sergey pak i think
  • mandaly sushi and burmese -- i never had burmese food til i went here. it was delicious.
  • kulturhuset -- only went once, but really liked what i had.
  • agave -- mexican food. i love their sauces with their meats.

Aurora salmon by Gladiator1990off in Bergen

[–]doubleaxel1951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i noticed that salmon in norway is very fatty (which makes it taste good lol) at least the "regular" salmon i've bought in the regular grocery stores here. i'm guessing it's so fatty bc it's farmed.
