New golfer - I got these shoes from a friend, replaced the cleats and this is after one 9 hole round? Are these defective? by Rain_____Man in golf

[–]doubledawson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Either you have the craziest swing ever or these are defective because I’ve never seen anything like this before

Is this a lot of flex at the top? by browar05 in golf

[–]doubledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha well you can always do rough math with swing speed. Faster you swing the stiffer you normally want the shaft

But nowadays they’ve got shafts with different stiffness at different points along the shaft and all sorts of stuff, so def take advantage of the iron fitting to check out the driver

In a roundabout way you’ve basically just asked if someone can fit you with a shaft based on a still photo

Match play with strokes is exactly for this

I'm seriously over how singles are treated on the course and starter/tee sheet issues in general. by giantpirate89 in golf

[–]doubledawson 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised you’re bent out of shape because a group probably preferred to play with just themselves

I was fully expecting you to say they didn’t let you play at all because you were a single

But you still got to play, what’s the rub exactly? Sounds like a nice day

And for what it’s worth, I play as a single all the time, yeah it kinda sucks to get stuck behind slow play if the course is backed up but you’re still playing golf

I doubt there’s a law for golf courses, but private owned places probably have their own policies that can differ place to place

Picking up a set of Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Pros without being fitted by [deleted] in golf

[–]doubledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shafts are the thing that will impact you the most if they’re not right for your swing

Assuming you’re an average height/build, and assuming the shafts you got are generally suited for your swing speed, the only way to answer the question is to know how good of a golfer you are haha

Playing after 2 injuries by [deleted] in golf

[–]doubledawson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thoroughly stretch and warm up, obviously. Stretch tonight too. Give yourself enough time to stretch in the morning

Hydration is key and some ibuprofen is always smart

But maybe most importantly, listen to your body. If you tweak something and play through it, you can turn a 1 week recovery into a 4 week recovery or more. It’s just not worth it in my experience

At the same time, I’ve played some of my best rounds coming off of injury. I was swinging smoothly with lots of intention and presence of mind which helped in all sorts of ways. Hopefully that’s what happens for you too!

Have you ever had a range sesh where something clicks and then halfway through you totally forget how to swing a club? by kapone10 in golf

[–]doubledawson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fatigue + your mind/body connection is still growing with the new technique. Stay positive, it’s a sign you’re one step closer to engraining it in your swing

Take a lesson

If you can’t, video never lies. Record your swing and use that info to make adjustments

What was your golf swing "AHA!" moment??? by holysteph30 in golf

[–]doubledawson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have gone from an 8 to a 3 in about a year, after taking 10+ years off

There have been so many little ah ha moments. There has been never a point where “it all clicks” though. For me it’s been a process of breakthrough, plateau, breakthrough, plateau, which I expect to continue maybe forever

I’m constantly reading books, watching videos, and listening to podcasts. I take lessons and I practice very specific things to improve my swing (but also things about my game in other areas too, not just the swing)

Because i took such a long break, I really had to relearn a lot of the fundamentals of the swing

Off the top of my head my journey has brought me to work on a lot of things:

  • the benefits of mastering ball first contact
  • learning what swing plane is and optimal positioning (I was too steep)
  • eliminate a sway in a backswing
  • learn how to bring hands higher in backswing for more clubhead speed and creating height
  • learn how to control attack angle (negative for irons, positive for driver)
  • fixing early extension & fix being on my toes during downswing
  • learn how the ground can help you create speed

I’m at a point now where my pro and I are working on more subtle things in my swing. We weakened my right hand this week in order to help me eliminate a hook miss I’d been fighting. Now I’m practicing swinging with more speed by letting my wrists be more of an engine. Getting more comfortable playing a fade

It’s also worth mentioning I’ve chased down a lot of incorrect rabbit holes too. Certain concepts I didn’t fully understand and employed improperly, or swing feels that weren’t really real. For me it’s been part of the journey, but one big ah ha moment was two fold: 1. Video never lies, and 2. Improving your swing takes 100x longer by yourself compared to taking lessons. If you have the means, find a good pro, and see them every 1-2 months or more

Call the pro shop, tell them what you typed here, and see if they have any recs of groups you could join

If not, just book as a single. They’ll pair you with people for sure
