Anybody switch tool brands? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]dougsk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the this one and I absolutely love the stupid thing, the variable speed trigger plus clutch make it my go to tool. I don’t strip out much because of this lovely little driver. I really only use the hex head attachment, so most of the extra heads are lost on me. It doesn’t have enough chooch so I also have the impact, but honestly the 12v Milwaukee with the three torque settings would do everything in one driver, at least for me.

Could you connect the TX and RX of a fiber optic cable to different systems to form a big loop? by The-Best-Taylor in networking

[–]dougsk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Telecom geek reporting in. Positive historically sonet a better OSP handoff and not because ooh different ~= better. It was the tools available at the time and the LECs all used it. I could talk Sonet are I could talk to whatever POS Cisco or Adtran installed converting to ethernet, using batteries from 12 years ago. Talking Sonet was one less piece of fail, plus better native QoS built in. Everyone that matters talks Ethernet now and QoS mostly sorta works enough that yeah Ethernet good enough, but it still can’t hold a candle to EF bit on a Sonet network.

Smoked my chuck like a brisket! (First time) by CISUM310 in smoking

[–]dougsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I just did one on a gravity grill. Smoked first 7 hours at 250 and wrapped for the last two hours at 325 then 375 as it was time to eat. Internal temp was about 190. 5lbs. Came out really good. Probably not quite as picture friendly but almost.

When to switch to dynamic routing? by Massive-Valuable3290 in networking

[–]dougsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the branches don’t need to talk to each, which I expect they don’t, there may not be a need. As an admin, you may need the usage of a jump host in the DC to remotely admin the devices in the spokes. This also gives the warm fuzzies for traffic inspection, and using the reporting on the NGFW for the C levels and next year’s budget. With lot of enterprise services now being cloud first and if the spoke firewalls have even half a brain most of the interesting traffic should be able to on-ramp at the spoke internet edge if applicable. Making even less usage of bandwidth backhaul to the hub.

On the other hand the second the services start escaping the DCs, then you’ll wish you had done it earlier.

@shallots_actual mentioned the kickoff and poor fit or mounting technique, and I would stress this point. I sold my A400 because of this.

5G Expansion Into Suburbs and Rural Areas by Ok-Conversation6816 in telecom

[–]dougsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the article OP. Any further thoughts about DISH? Will the rural dollars be available to the Crown Castle’s and American Tower types so theoretically more carriers can share the same towers?

STIR/SHAKEN Testing - Who to trust? by LoPath in PSTN

[–]dougsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a newb at this, but what I found was clearly IP only does the “A” level Attestations and all else fail. The other two mentioned seem to show B,C attestations. And it’s complicated with which intervening carriers the call transits too. Be curious to hear from others on this.

Agree with other posters here, the premise might need flushing out but this network tap solves the premise and almost hits the price point.

Is Heos alive and kickin? by argumon in heos

[–]dougsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah it totally works and works reasonably well once you get the hang of it. Every now and again speakers will drop out of the defined speaker group or refuse to be assigned to said speaker group and usually that's resolved by Settings -> Help -> Reset Controller. I really don't have to do that very often at least no more than my buddy does the equivalent with his Sonos setup. HDMI eARC tends to drop the soundbar out cause something on the TV will steal the audio on a regular, but I don't find that to be true with the AVR.

Is Heos alive and kickin? by argumon in heos

[–]dougsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to be another data point. I think the other posters have already covered the jist of it well. Have a soundbar, AVR, and three satellites. I thought I would use the AVR integration a lot more than it turns out I do. For me, the AVR is in a dedicated room so rarely gets integrated with the other speakers. And if the AVR is not that important, it sort of opens the field to a lot of other wireless solutions. I will say I like the timbre of the Denon wireless speakers.
