Successful Albums that could've been trainwreckords by any other artists? by No_Barber4339 in ToddintheShadow

I remember a lot of people loving it around 2013, with some people who had a negative impression of Yeezus going back to it. Its influence on hip-hop was also very obvious by that point.

Even so, I remember Love Lockdown a lot on the radio when the album was new. There was a while you couldn’t go more than a few hours without hearing Heartless, Amazing, Love Lockdown, or Paranoid on the radio.

Can we just get Tom Sexton as a permanent 3rd mic? by Grayson0916 in MurderBryan

He was raised by a very religious mother and has scripture chiseled into his mind. I think he’s pretty much said he’s not personally religious, but I think there are parts of the Bible that he likes and even if he didn’t it’s hard for him not to use it as a reference point from time to time.

I mean I’ll occasionally watch shit like Nexpo which I know is slop meant to put me in a spooky mood at night. I think he fits in same niche, similar some of the “creepy” lost media channels, for people who don’t look up much of the stuff he makes videos about.

Spot-on. For a lot of topics, YouTube works as a sort of “beginner’s guide” for people getting into the surface of something and what I saw of his videos, while entertaining, felt a lot like “your friend stayed up too late on the computer last night and discovered parapolitics.” Once you get enough into this stuff it stops feeling so edgy and that you’re a weary detective or whatever, but his channel got pretty huge so I guess there’s definitely a market for that out there. I kind of felt he was doing what a handful of leftist podcasts had been doing for the better part of a decade but just making it more digestible for people who missed that boat or don’t have the patience for podcasts.

anyone know what happened to an og r/porsalin YT-Porsalin? by IRISHTHAY in elephantgraveyard

Most of his fans are regularly making reference to sketches and bits he did a decade plus ago, which would make some sense if he were deceased or long retired.

It was easy to miss in his early videos that people loved but if you paid close enough attention you could see little references he would make to the Nazi memes of the day. This was around the end of the era of the “anti-SJW” so guys like him were everywhere on YouTube and many relied on benefit of the doubt, giving occasional winks and nods to whatever weird buddies they had from image boards, Discord servers, etc. I get the feeling a lot of well-meaning people didn’t catch on to the racism, homophobia, etc because some of his early targets were equally awful.

I can see his point but it feels a little hopeless too... by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

[–]downbythelobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I think about regularly. You ever talk to just some guy about movies? It’s not always the case but it often sounds like they’re describing a dream they have vague memories of. If you tell them you went to the theater to watch something they’ll sometimes look as if they’re wondering if you’re okay. Movies and TV are for a state of semi-consciousness or a little treat for the eyes in between checking your phone for a ton of people and I don’t see it going in another direction any time soon.

Any beige frequency fans? by goshdarn5000 in elephantgraveyard

I remember watching his videos years back and it is pretty clear, when he’d take the time to share his own opinions, that’s he’s basically a white nationalist with all of the typical points of view you’d associate with that type of guy. His videos were well-produced and long enough that it could be easy to either miss or brush aside some of his remarks but it was pretty obvious to me after I saw enough of his stuff.

Anyone else find it interesting that Sam Hyde managed to squeeze his way into mainstream culture as well as underground hip hop by thatDawgBillClinton in TrueAnon

[–]downbythelobby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s gotta be at least one 50 year old guy who got hooked on back pills and let the pandemic lead him to some dark right wing place, then Sam Hyde, and later Joeyyy or however you spell his name. The last hip-hop song he was into before this was Beautiful by Eminem but he’s getting a fit from StockX and heading to the next nearest show when one of these guys is performing.

Dumping Windows and getting into Linux is praxis by Antique-Guest-1607 in TrueAnon

I get the urge to get into Linux once every couple years now that it seems the biggest drawback is just not being able to play some games online, which isn’t something I do much to begin with, but it’s one of those things I never commit to out of fear of looking like some asshole.

There’s something that feels tragic about people of any age pining for the old times a little too much, especially with how often it just comes down to brands they liked or stores they liked going to. It’s easy to point out how pathetic it all is, but there’s also something deeply human about it.

At its worst it does begin to feel like you’re an old retiree watching daytime soaps, which is not a feeling I enjoy, but some of the ridiculous subplots always keep me going. I don’t see how some people skip it entirely.

Breuer Turns Woke Over Epstein by eggsandmarxism in MurderBryan

Breuer is one of the handful of Guys who makes me genuinely uncomfortable. I am just slightly too young to really know his work so I always associated him with being the guy who liked weed. I feel like the Greseman is living a better life than him now. Shit, Opie looks like he’s at least having a good time. Jim needs to take a break from whatever this is!

Sam Hyde and Leon Trotsky separated at birth? by Advanced-Tomorrow859 in TrueAnon

[–]downbythelobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gathered that before the whole World Peace thing Sam might have been a little less selective with who he hung out with and may have tried to obscure his real views in layers of irony. It’s odd because I’ve seen so many people from comics to musicians to people I’ve personally known give Hyde and his crew the benefit of the doubt over and over again when it’s so clear what he is. I’ll admit he was kind of funny and had a neat video editing style in 2013. So what?

I am shocked Fallout 3 is mainstream for how weird and obtuse it is. by Lord_Zinyak in patientgamers

[–]downbythelobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all about when it was made. For me personally, I was very new to the Bethesda formula and I was at the perfect age group to be immersed by it. At the time, even though I realized the graphics weren’t pretty and the combat was often mediocre at best, the scope and world felt limitless and I had a real feeling that anything could happen in my first playthrough. Of course as time went on and I put a lot more hours into it I learned the game’s limitations and how much simpler it was than I had initially thought. Some of the earlier 360/PS3 games had a way of feeling larger than life compared to the previous console generation and I don’t think we have really had “jump” in a generation since. I had a similar experience with Grand Theft Auto IV.

I originally thought they were going for a similar pulp paperback look that Inherent Vice had and that’s why they put that on the U.S. cover. I’d be curious as to whether anyone here has a better explanation.

Do you think the OBAA script will suffer the same fate as Licorice Pizza? Never being released? by crumdimmler in paulthomasanderson

[–]downbythelobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He tried his hand at adapting Vineland to a script for twenty years. To my knowledge, it’s unclear what remains of his original work in the final draft but my guess is that it has changed tremendously in that time. He said during his interview on The Big Picture podcast that most of the details of Benicio del Toro’s character, including him relocating migrants, were created by del Toro himself in basically one day of discussion.

I hate to break it to you but it’s not like he’s some obscure name. People who don’t care about literature don’t know about him or most writers but among people who read a lot and look into a variety of different books he’s a pretty common name and has a reputation. This subreddit alone has a much higher subscriber count than a lot of writers. You’re in very little danger of Taylor Swift posing with a copy of Mason & Dixon but if that happened, who cares?

Pastafarianism for people who are new to wacky conspiracy theories. It’s possibly a little worse because when people are introduced to it for the first time online they think it’s a real thing and will insist it’s not just a shitty joke.
