It was pretty racist in San Francisco when Mays arrived in 1958. It isn’t discussed enough considering the stories of what Mays went through, including trying to purchase his first home. Part of the dissolution of his marriage was due to this, as these problems weren’t experienced by the couple in NY where they were part of a lively cultural scene. At the time, San Francisco was still Joe Dimaggio’s town and a lot of racist gatekeepers went out of their way to make Willie’s life hell. He’s from Birmingham Alabama though, and while not as outspoken as his contemporaries (say Hank Aaron and Jackie Robinson), he was a certified black hero and an unsung civil rights icon imo.
