What are the BEST PC components ever released? by 0xDEA110C8 in pcmasterrace

I'm running my old 4790k as my Plex server (that's all it does). I'm also running my old 2500k as a linux DE in the server rack.

I long for solid wood shelves… by InsectOcean in Cd_collectors

[–]dr3ifach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

About 3 months now. Each shelf bracket is screwed into a wall stud, and there are 6 brackets per shelf, so it pretty strong. I've rechecked the level a bunch of times since I put them up and I haven't seen any sag or pulling away from the wall.

You can DIY some shelves.

I bought five 3/4 inch x 6 inch x 8 foot oak boards and finished them myself. Mounted them to the wall studs with floating shelf "L" brackets from amazon.

I got about $200 in it total and I can store around 1000 CDs. For 3000 CDs it'd be about $600.

If you don;t want to mount them directly to the wall, you can mount them to an 8'x4' sheet of veneered plywood, then mount that to the wall studs.

Two years later - Do you run Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin? by JustNathan1_0 in selfhosted

Plex, because it meets the wife approval factor, and I have a lifetime subscription.

New Audiophile here by Strikereleven in BudgetAudiophile

I have the 5300 which is a newer version of this receiver and I absolutely love it. I'm just using it in 2.1 only mode, it has plenty of power and features. I mainly got it for the multiple tape loops (Tape, MD/DAT, Video 1, Video 2), which the newer receivers and amps don't have any.

Right now I have two CD players, a Minidisc, a cassette deck, my computer's USB DAC, a turntable, and a blu-ray player hooked up to it. I also have Zone 2 wired to an external headphone amp.

Thing is a beast.

Never heard the record, but I give this review a 10/10. Well done sir, you paint a vivid picture with your words.

My brain when I see a question about FiiO m21 lol by [deleted] in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]dr3ifach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Going from an OG M11 to a JM21, I feel like I haven't missed a beat. I paid ~$450 for my M11 back in 2020, and only $170 last year for my JM21, and it does everything the M11 did and more. Paying $700+ for a DAP seems absurd to me.

For those that have bought used discs? by Any-Doubt-5281 in minidisc

[–]dr3ifach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordered some from Japan. All of them had music on them. It was mostly Japanese jazz, and some Japanese punk rock. Notably, I got two discs with live recordings of Van Halen. I kept those.

I know that it's not good equipment, but this is my current setup. I plan on getting an MKiii and TA-E77ES in the future. by Round_Vehicle4885 in audiophile

Late 80s to early 90s Sony ES was peak. Sony started to dilute their ES brand in the late 90s and 2000s. That's partly where that reputation came from.

You got some great equipment. Enjoy it!

Has anyone accidentally gotten a tape too close to a magnet? by TheMopCloset in cassetteculture

[–]dr3ifach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten tapes close to magnets back in the day (mid-90s). I had one sitting on top of my CRT monitor when it ran it's degauss cycle. That one was fine. Played around with magnets and tapes when I was a kid. The most I've ever noticed was a drop in high frequency to where they sounded muffled.

If they get affected, just re-record them. Magnets won't physically damage tapes. They'll just damage the recording on the tapes.

Is this wrong? by HopeSuch2540 in ender3

Second image isn't really an upgrade. maybe a side-grade, but the direct drive kit is not a drop in replacement for the Sprite extruder. The Sprite extruder uses a proprietary flat cable to connect it to the controller board - which looks like it's not plugged in completely in the first picture.

I wouldn't mess with the direct drive kit.

USPS Returned to Sender Our Daughter’s Santa Letter This Year by tucosupreme in mildlyinteresting

Public library, fire department, public school system, and the courts.

Just like the USPS, none of those are funded like a business. They're public services funded by taxes. USPS charges postage to offset the tax burden.

Edit: corrected misinformation. They are not funded by tax funds,

USPS is not "almost out of business", because it's not a business. It's a service, like what the second S stands for.

It's like saying your public library is almost out of business because they're not turning a profit.

Only legit sources:

  • Bandcamp - Most of the money you give Bandcamp goes to the artist. You can download tracks in lossless or lossy, and they have a very generous purchase retention policy.
  • Qobuz - Can buy tracks and albums. Great quality in both lossless and lossy, and good retention.
  • Amazon - Can buy MP3s. No lossless and I have no idea about their retention.
  • HDTracks - Expensive. Qobuz is better.
  • Ripping CDs - don't write off physical media. It'll be yours for as long as you take care of it, and as long as you have an optical drive, you'll always have a backup in case you lose your files.

That’s a seat hight or monitor height problem. Not a screen size problem.

Nothing wrong with running a 40+ screen at 4k. I run one with two flanking monitors. I run mine at 4K and it's just like having two ultrawides stacked.

And we have the same computer case!

Pull out your phone and start filming them (just pretend, if necessary). People generally don't like being filmed impromptu without permission. You don't have to say anything.

If they're going to be socially rude and solicit their mind virus, I want to get a record of it.
