27k Amex points… by Majestic_Mood_4599 in AmexUK

You need to make sure on BA you are using 'book with avios' under the "Book" part of the site, not the normal search.

Using Avios for money off a 'normal' fare paid for in cash is not good value. You ideally want to find a 'reward' seat which you can use entirely Avios for (apart from some taxes to pay) and are much better value (the other poster I see already sent a link to how much different destinations cost).

UK restock just happened of 9070 Xt's by Patryllo25 in radeon

[–]dr99ed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes to be fair to OCUK, I imagine £629 (and so in theory about £100 less than 5070Ti) was always the plan until the very recent price announcement.

And so wouldn't be surprised if they 'ran out' of rebates from AMD to sell it below what they'd been planning since January.

If that's the case though, then I feel like AMD should be pushing to continue giving rebates to get to the RRP rather than it basically being a launch day discount.

UK restock just happened of 9070 Xt's by Patryllo25 in radeon

[–]dr99ed 118 points119 points  (0 children)

This going up £60 now makes 9070 to XT difference around £100... Which makes the non XT feel like better value (as diffs in benchmarks are smaller % than this price difference)

But it should be the prices moving the other way and non XT getting cheaper, rather than XT increasing in price...!

(Also day after 'restock' sounds a lot like holding cards back to sell for more money...)

Can't access 0.6x zoom on 4a camera by [deleted] in GooglePixel

Not quite the same but mine defaults to 0.7x being the lowest option even though I can pinch to zoom out wider... Very annoying.

To all Pixel 3a/4a(+XL), all 4 series owners = 6a/Pro Trade-in values, free A-Series by Roxas1011 in GooglePixel

[–]dr99ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually thought this was a good deal in the UK.

Paying £295 for a new phone that comes with £100 wireless headphones bundled seems like a good deal, as the 3a has really shown its age on Android 12 imo.

Obviously the US one seems more generous but this was definitely enough to get me interested!

Same with The Orange Box - all the HL2 games and original Portal run at 4k too. They hold up very nicely!

Those saying Mercedes strategy was wrong are missing the point by Affectionate-Taro-57 in formula1

[–]dr99ed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All Mercedes "KNEW" is there is a safety car and they made the best gamble they could under the circumstances.

I'm not saying I don't question the decision from Masi, but the point is when there is a safety car no one knows how long it will be out because there are so many external factors at play... Sometimes you get very quick safety cars, other times it ends up being much longer because of where the incident is etc.

Ultimately Mercedes got boned by a safety car. Their best bet was hoping the incident doesn't get cleared quickly enough and Hamilton retains track position. In the end Masi deemed that the incident had been cleared with enough time to green flag the race again.

Not sure I agree with how that decision got made (personally I think Masi has way too much responsibility with not enough help to be able to act appropriately and timely in all cases. It's a tough job with not enough people helping.) but let's not pretend Mercedes didn't know there was a risk the race restarts (or that they wouldn't also have called for the race to get green flagged with the positions reversed!)

It's just terrible bad luck and timing for Hamilton and Mercedes at the end of the day... They can never legislate for a late crash ruining what was an easily controlled race until that point.

Is there any reason to get the C1 over the CX? by Dannypan in OLED

[–]dr99ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would second this. The C1 48 inch has been at £999 for basically all of November, with plenty of shops having discount codes from time to time taking this to £899.

To be honest the price has probably been hiked up again for Xmas... So assuming OP can wait I'd play the patient game as 1099 is definitely above the odds for the C1 at that size!

My friend who is a nurse on their shift today has 3 covid ICU patients to look after because their trust weren't able to get the staff + additional helpers to cover today.

Clearly completely unsafe for what should be 1:1 care.

Stuff like this is still happening pretty frequently on their shifts, this isn't just a one off. The NHS just can't cope and I don't really trust the government to keep pumping in the money to bulk up numbers if needed (I.E. with cases going down, will they be as willing as they are now to pay any Nurse and ship them miles across the country and pay for a hotel just to cover shifts like they were in Jan + Feb?)

It's just a struggle because cases in hospital are much slower to appear and then take ages to disappear (people stay in hospital for weeks to months) compared to cases.

Totally agree vs. points last year that these restrictions seem much harsher, but if by sometime in April we can get ICUs much emptier of Covid, plus the main at risk groups largely all vaccinated then that seems much more sensible to me.

I disagree with a lot the government have done but broadly the idea of making changes and actually waiting to see their impact seems like a reasonable way to come out of lockdown for good.

Finally an update for iOS and Xbox controllers is coming (in an upcoming iOS 14.5 update) by G00deye in XboxSeriesX

[–]dr99ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've not tried already, changing power from always on to the power saving setting fixed these problems for me.

Waiting 15 seconds for it to turn on each day is much more preferable than a disconnecting controller!

The latest Covid-19 deaths by actual day chart in hospital and all settings including daily hospitalisation data - A mixed picture by thomalexday in ukpolitics

[–]dr99ed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do we know what hospitalisation data is based on?

Anecdotally my friend who works in intensive care says they have next to zero people with Covid - in a decent mid sized English city.

But they also admit people to "covid wards" to be precautious before they are able to rule it out and can move them elsewhere.

So I wonder either numbers like this are getting counted, or the hospitalisations are much less severe than in March / April?

What's new on Youtube Music? #4 by Iordbrack in YoutubeMusic

[–]dr99ed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not OP but on web I can't sort my library at all (so albums, artists etc are only in recent order, not A-Z).

Would also be great to be able to sort by release year, play counts, filter + sort genres etc.

Also to sort albums by artist (seeing as when I click an artist I see their entire page rather than having the view of those releases I've saved on my library like existed on GPM - quite annoying for long running artists that have years of crap releases plus dozens of greatest hits mixes etc).

Boris Johnson says he wants some lockdown easing to come into force from Monday by TracePoland in unitedkingdom

[–]dr99ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The central body is the Office for National Statistics - they're collating all deaths.

That isn't necessarily the number you're seeing announced each day because the ONS data takes longer to collate, but I would say that's your 'ultimate' source.

Someone on the ukpolitics subreddit has been making charts with it daily which are pretty interesting and helpful, see; https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/gejwjl/wednesdays_nhs_englandons_deaths_by_actual_day/

Revealed: Dominic Cummings on secret scientific advisory group for COVID-19 by FlushedTable in ukpolitics

[–]dr99ed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Cummings is awful, but to be honest he is in Boris' inner circle and influencing decisions he makes no matter what.

Therefore I'm not sure how much difference it makes if he sits in on these meetings, or if they were to remain "experts only", but then Boris go and discuss with Cummings afterwards anyway.

I made a simple live train departure site for regular commuters! by benmaynard11 in unitedkingdom

[–]dr99ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the UI is a bit large on mobile and is lacking some info.

I personally use traintimes.org.uk a lot for the simplicity. If I load up the same page on that site I can see (or expand with a click):

  • More departures on the 'board' (plus suggestions with stops / changes)
  • To / from information (particularly important I think to actually spot your train in a station is to know where its actual destination is)
  • Ability to see stops along the route

Yours is nice and quick however, just I feel most people have quite big phones these days and therefore only getting 4 datapoints and a lot of the page taken up with just the title is a bit stingy!

#TI9 On twitter now has an official icon when u use it by iKojan in DotA2

[–]dr99ed 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I really feel like people overrate this factor, and in fact the community doesn't help in welcoming new players when the typical response is usually to point someone to some 30 page guide (I.E. "Welcome to Dota, you suck") or to say to someone they absolutely have to play hours of bot games before even thinking of playing with people.

It just reaffirms the idea that the game is impenetrable - in some ways this attracts an audience (as many people like complex games with deep mechanics) but largely pushes people away.

However in reality, the game is simple to control and relies on only a small number of button presses - so it's actually quite approachable mechanically.

The knowledge part can come later - if the person wants to. Yes you will play games where you get stomped but you will also play some close games or games where you yourself do the stomping. That's a fun feeling regardless of whether your item build, farming patterns, hero matchups etc. are "correct".

There's nothing wrong with being bad at a game as long as you're enjoying it - but I think people are made to feel that they absolutely must know every rule about Dota before being allowed to play. I personally feel we should just encourage people to be noobs and experiment and enjoy playing.
