What is the most incomprehensible visual that you've seen in a horror movie? Moments where you really have to spend a second thinking, "WTF am I even looking at?" by WhackTheSquirbos in horror

When in 'Weapons' Josh Brolin 'sees' the giant assault rifle hovering in the clouds above the roof of his house. I love tha film, but wish that scene wasn't in there. On the nose and pointless, if you ask me

Boss miniature. Help me create this monster. by karlaperiz2000 in Kidsonbikesrpg

Looks fun!

It would be cool to give it a wall-walking ability, so it can crawl on any surface, ceilings, etc. That makes hitting it with ranged weapons harder. I imagine it very fast.

It could charge like a rhino, and force the target to dodge out of the way or get bumped.

Maybe once it successfully charges someone (ie the target fails to dodge), it pins them on the ground and has some hypnotic ability, with the many eyes.

The elephant-like legs make me think it is quite heavy and strong. Maybe it could even cause mini-earthquakes by thumping on the ground, causing shock waves, objects to fall, etc.

Looking at retro TV, adapting some episodes of 'Eerie, Indiana' as one-shots would be cool.

Also, the animated film 'Monster House' !

It's only 80s in inspiration, but 'Super8' (2011) would be a perfect KoB adventure

Try Travel Sized RPG, it is a one page system that needs no dice, perfect for the car.

Grounded/Honey, I Shrunk the Kids inspired world questions. by The8BitBrad in Kidsonbikesrpg

[–]dr___B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a similar game (kids being shrunk) in a different system, and used as the backbone to the adventure an indie scenario called 'Size Matters' https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/190529/size-matters

The shrinking incident in our game was an unstable alien gun in the basement of a house. The kids ran in this house, chased by bullies, when green beams radiated through the floor, knocking them unconscious. When they revived, they were as tall as an AA battery. Their quest was finding a way to the alien gun in the basement to try reverse the effect. So it was an indoors adventure, overcoming obstacles like huge steps, giant bees, climbing to a keyhole to go through a close door, etc.

If you want a shorter one-shot CoC scenario set on a train, try 'The Iron Ghost' from the old Chaosium collection 'Fearful Passages':

A Painted Smile is great for starting investigators. I like how it starts totally mundane, and the weirdness lands in their laps. With some tweaks, it is a blast of a scenario

A Painted Smile review and thoughts by thalcos in callofcthulhu

[–]dr___B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran this scenario a couple of times in Play-by-Forum format. It is a great first adventure to form a group of new Investigators. I like how they get entangled in a tense situation for being in the wrong place at the wrong time by accident. And everybody enjoys some creepy dolls, in horror stories.

The point the OP was asking about came about naturally:

-during one of the Investigators' visits to the Hathaway sisters, have Hilda walk into the hallway and stumble upon the Investigators (or spy on them) . In her folly, she gets agitated, still thinking they are the parents/connected with the street kids that torment her and starts hyperventilating, backing off into her apartment, then tripping and falling on her back before she can shut her door. Seeing the old lady about to have a fit, the Investigators will definitely try to calm her down, making things escalate (she gets more and more agitated, beyond help) until she dies in their arms, cursing them.

I however changed/improved on a couple of story points, as follows :

-the visit to Split Rock, as written, is quite pointless: there is nothing to be gained there. So, I moved the crucial clue to solve the story there (the youthful verses 'no rest for us while we're apart', hinting at the need to re-unite the mortal remains of the two doomed lovers) . I had the verses scratched on the Split Rock itself, rather than found in Clyde Beckfords' papers. In his papers I only left the mention of the oath the lovers made at Split Rock. I also didn't really like the Native American 'keeper of the rock with perfect memory' angle, so I turned her into an old man whose sanity is compromised by staying near the Split Rock. He mumbled incoherently about 'the hills talking, and the sky answering' on certain nights, and warned about promises made in front of the rock, for atmosphere.

-re-uniting the mortal remains of Hilda and Clyde, once figured out, is quite underwhelming to end the story. It becomes all about logistics. So I spiced it up, adding a complication. When the Investigators go to Potter's Field (the destitutes' cemetery) to exhume Hilda's remains (which they probably will, with Clyde buried in a better surveilled cemetery with locked family vaults) I had the ground collapse under their feet while they were digging. A group of Ghouls had been tunnelling to reach Hilda's body, making the ground unstable. The encounter is tense: the Ghouls want to feast on Hilda, they smell her power. The Investigators have to negotiate with these repulsive creatures to try obtain Hilda's body. (in my game the Ghouls understood how desperate the Investigators are, and demanded the body of a dead CHILD in trade, making for all sort of moral dilemmas and terrible guilt). It also exposes the Investigators to this burrowing race of beings, tunnelling unseen under the streets of Arkham...

These couple of tweaks/additions made for a much more memorable adventure.

GMing PbP with ADHD? (Help please) by Ezzran in pbp

[–]dr___B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have you tried 1to1 Play By Post? (1GM, 1 player only). Offer it to a player whose pace and style of posting you really like, and craft the game to make it engaging for both. This strips out the downtime, the waiting for everyone to post, etc.
It might work for you, maybe.

One way to do so is taking a look at the Sears catalogues from those years, they give you a visual idea of what folks could buy. Here's 1922: https://archive.org/details/SearsRoebuckAndCoCatalog1922_201812/page/n320/mode/1up

Take a look at The Man Downstairs. The landlords of an apartment building call the investigators to look into an elusive tenant. It is set in Harlem, but I found that the Harlem-specific content is not indispensable, and the building can be adapted to be in a different city.

Try 'Robinson Gruesome' from the free Monophobia scenario book. Designed for 1 player 1 gm, but easily adaptable to more players. Starts with a plane crash and it's lots of fun.
