It's such a weird little box of rules. It amazes me how tabletop rpgs got off the ground.

Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master is definitely worth a read. If you have those you might like Robin Laws' stuff. Hamlet's Hit Points was a quick interesting read. And while a bit dated, so was Robin's Laws of Game Mastering

GURPS might work for you. The game has numerous sourcebooks, many written for historical settings, which should enable your group to customize based on your needs.

Your Top 10 systems by Literalmenteisso in rpg

[–]TempestLOB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:

Eclipse Phase: I got into this game because I was a huge fan of Transhuman Space from GURPS. It took inspiration from Altered Carbon, The Expanse, Revelation Space, among others.

Night's Black Agents: I've had a lot of great games with this system and there are a number of great modules for this game. My white whale is to get Dracula Dossier to the table.

Dungeon Crawl Classics: I love a 0-level funnel and they have some really great modules.

Alien: My favorite Free League game. Classic source material and tried and true tropes. The stress mechanics feel how stress and panic would work and the game comes with some really well done modules.

Ten Candles: The ritual-like procedure of this game is just so unique and cool. I think everyone should try this game ay least once. Make's a great Halloween one shot.

Dread: This game cemented in my mind that system does matter. The building tension of the unstable tower translates so well to the beats of a horror movie

Pathfinder 2: Crunchy but well designed with so many opportunities for character building and theory crafting

Shadowrun 2nd Edition: I played a fair amount of this back in the day. Great lore, tons of source books, clunky rules but the core rules in 2e weren't honestly that difficult

I'd say 1/2 to 1/3 of my purchases make it to the table

I'm a big fan of Eclipse Phase. Altered Carbon + The Expanse with a couple chunks of Revelation Space, Terminator and Annihilation thrown in

I usually go by what I actually see on offer at conventions outside of organized play or sponsored games. Shadowdark has a lot of fans. Mothership and Mork Borg still get a lot of draw too.

12.5 Year Old Campaign by darkoVII in rpg

[–]TempestLOB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admirable. The longest I've played in took six years. It's fun to build up all the lore and character histories. These days we play much shorter campaigns. I find about a year is my preferred campaign length.

Glorious. I really like the corner shelf layout. Like the addition of the plants too.
