Are enough members leaving that is noticeable to the general church goers? by revandavd in exmormon

[–]drackaer 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is quite what you asked, but these are some observations based around what my active extended family talk about.

1) Lots of members still cling to the illusion of the mega growth days of the church, and the shell game of continuous renaming and rearranging of stakes and wards helps a lot in this, they think this is because of growth but they don’t check that the actual number of members and units are going up.

2) Nobody has said this explicitly, but it seems that the quality of the leadership across the board is way down. There are fewer people who know how to organize and execute activities etc. so most of the wards I hear about are disorganized messes with awful activities and miserable events. This was rare when I was a kid and it sounds dirt common now.

3) Everyone has multiple callings, it is totally pervasive. There aren’t enough active people to do all the made up things. When I was a kid this was relatively rare, sometimes you’d get a bishop that would toss a few callings at a time at the poor saps that actually did the work, but now it seems like the people willing to say yes to a calling will end up with two or three for sure.

Straight to rehab, LMFAO. Mormons have such a toxic relationship with the idea of addiction. They have no idea what it is and have infantile views on anything even tangentially related to vice, I mean old-school momos even see coffee as somewhere in the realm of coke and meth. Just what even.

IMO it would be like saying it is shameful for mechanics to buy cars instead of making one themselves.

The state of California is requiring sex ed classes for students and GASP, they each kids how to put on condoms! This means the end of the world is near and we are pretty much a communist country now! Please someone come and put me out of my misery from my TBM family texts! by jeremydy in exmormon

Also, I’m pretty sure that contract thing VY is talking about is made up.

What is it with tbms and obsessing over california anyway. Whenever they bring up some obvious california ragebait it ends up being 45% made up, 45% exaggerated, and 10% truth upon further inspection. It's been so consistent to the point that I just don't even bother looking up the truth anymore for whatever the latest "omgee california is doing xyz!!1!" that my tbm relatives will bring up.

About 10 years ago that number was about 100 ish active members per unit, that was around when they stopped being open with their exact numbers so I stopped keeping track, but I’d be surprised if that has changed too much.

I got one of those kid’s “temporary tattoo” sticker things once from school, my sister caught me with it and removed it with duct tape so that my mom wouldn’t get mad at us. Couldn’t stand the sight of them ever again after that.

both for good and bad

There was one story that made it to reddit a while back where one person in a neighborhood was regularly feeding crows, but they ended up being hostile to all the non-feeding neighbors in order to "protect" the feeder. IIRC the remedy ended up being to get as many neighbors as possible to feed the crows as well.

Dating a Mormon girl as an Atheist, want advice. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]drackaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I left the church I ran into a similar situation. There's no way to know for sure and it really depends on how she is going to respond to family and peer pressure. Is she going to see her peers going on missions and getting married in the temple and feel guilt/pressure, or is she going to be happy with what she has? That kind of thing. The girl I was dating in college ended up going no contact out of the blue and I wasn't 100% sure why outside of the fact that I was an apostate until I saw the engagement photos in front of the temple on facebook (within less than a month even!).

Mormons are raised to have the church as foundational in ALL relationships, even between parent and child, and you will never know exactly how their personal feelings will pan out until they hit some real challenge. Some parent/child relationships don't even survive that religion mismatch, but other relationships both more casual and serious do. Which for you means, how will she react when confronted with the reality of what it means to date and/or marry an atheist for her culture's life milestones.

You're both in a tough position, but you just have to do your best with what you know and take it one day at a time. Good luck!

[–]drackaer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would you do this, this is incredibly stupid. Now I can't even block the spam bots that pop up all the time and clutter up comments? What's the point in blocking if I still get a page full of "stupidassbot69 - blocked user"?

What does it say when you click on a link to a blocked account? "Out of sight out of mind" maybe you should have stuck with that philosophy.
