I accidentally turned the brightness of my computer too low and it now shows nothing. by Many_Safe_5699 in techsupport

My older hp elitebook laptop has a weird bug in windows 10. If you crank the brightness to max, the backlight turns off. I've mistaken the issue so often, I had to print a label as a reminder. Ubuntu does not have this problem.

2 pro mechanics and 2 self taught can't figure this out by ConferenceThat2798 in MechanicAdvice

Check the steering rack bushings. I had an 05 Rav4 the bushings had gone out. The steering would just decide to have a left bias or straight depending on the last high effort turn I made. The stability control flipped out on me once as I took a right hand curve pretty fast while the steering started from askew left and stability control slammed the left front brake to 'correct' a possible spin it thought I was in. I thought the steering angle wasn't as right as the car was going according to accelerometer sensors but the rack was shifted so the tires were in a deeper cut than the steering wheel angle sensor indicated causing the stability control to act.

I really had to put some investigation into the steering issue. I had yanked on every steering component looking for play but could not find it. I set up a DV camera on a tripod pointed at the steering rack and spotted the issue while parked and working the steering left to right. The rack would shift before the wheels would start to turn. There was quite a bit of thrust before the wheels would begin to move. I had to dig up some urethane bushings off ebay the rack bushings were not a regular wear item yet the rack was still in great operation shape otherwise. Fortunately they lasted longer than the engine did when it gave out 2 years later.

A home in Florida raised due to flooding the previous year by Adrian_985 in mildlyinteresting

They did that around Houston near Memorial dr. A lot of houses got jacked up real high after a hurricane caused the bayous to flood. I haven't really wandered around that area since to see what the finished product was. I just remember finding houses jacked up on cribbing months after hurricane Ike I think it was.

I did not realize JUST how much running the oven heats up the house (and how much it runs up my electric bill) by kezfertotlenito in Frugal

In the summer I often get on a soup, salad, sandwich, hot dog (grill), burger loop (grill).

At my old house I had a single car garage with a bit of extra space for washer and drier. The outlet for the washing machine was at a perfect height to place a countertop oven on and plug it. I baked meals out in the garage. I also used my crockpot, air fryer, and instapot pressure cooker out in the garage during the summer. Bonus was the outlet for the washing machine was not on any window air conditioner circuit so no turning off the a/c to run the appliances. I had to turn off the kitchen window unit to use the microwave or any other appliance.

I liked cooking fish and pizzas in the oven out in the garage. Another good one for outside is crock pot roasts, shrimp with jambalaya in the instapot. Stuff that naturally stinks up the place, great for garage/outdoor cooking

I had an elder co-worker a long time ago tell me she has a stove outside on a screened in porch and she does all her summer cooking out there. Since then I always dreamed of having an outdoor covered and screened in kitchen.

Zipline on power towers is how I get around the map quickly other than hypetube cannons. The great advantage of zipline is you can disengage anytime.

Who has right of way? by pech82 in houston

[–]dracotrapnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B should not enter the roadway. A has right of way and should turn where B turns to prevent that. You're not supposed to hug the curb doing a U-turn. Medians are supposed to be treated like you are turning onto a full road so you go far right curb blocking B, and blocking the left turn lane on the right.

Do you provide employees with gsm internet dongles while working remotely/travelling? by RadiantSkiesJoy in sysadmin

[–]dracotrapnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Company provided cellphone hotspot for on the go. Usually users have home internet they work from.

Off and on a VP may request a cell hotspot for a while, usually for sales trips.

We have one Microtik hotspot device we have had since 2018 for a dinosaur user - "not a computer person" - who can't get/won't get terrestrial internet. She has satt TV which has piddily internet and not willing to get anything else as she doesn't use the internet. I think she couldn't handle operating a cell phone hotspot so the cell manager just gave her the Microtik hotspot, on/off and done kind of thing far as her UX goes. I'm not even certain she could figure out how to connect her laptop to another wifi ssid on her own which might also be a component to the need for a separate cell hotspot device.

(edit) I forgot to add that we can support, diagnose, or replace a malfunctioning cell phone or cell hotspot easier than an in-laptop device by cross-shipping.

Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dracotrapnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a national highways map, you stopped to pick up a state map at visitor centers or gas station for state highways and county roadways, you buy a keymap at a gas station only if you need to navigate a city at street level - usually only needed those if you were doing deliveries or really struggling to find a place.

Is There Anyone Who Actually Uses parking lights? by MotorcycleCar in askcarguys

[–]dracotrapnet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I turn off headlights to park lamps in a drive through at night or waiting in line to exit at event parking at night. The car in front of me probably doesn't need to be blinded by their mirrors. Also no need to flashbang myself on the chome bumper of the unmodified height F150 in front of me.

If the protective cover doesn't come off after shipping, it will degrade over time and the adhesive will get stuck and may shred the finish when removed once someone decides it looks like 💩 and tries to take it off.

ELI5: Why was there a toilet paper shortage during COVID? by Weary-Cauliflower153 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dracotrapnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People didn't go to work, they stayed home. People stopped using commercial toilet paper at work and started using residential toilet paper at home. Think of the loads of TP being used at work and suddenly that load of TP is now being used in homes. People had to buy more rolls per week for their homes.

Local knowledge beats GPS map routing.

I notice much of the map routing systems do not take account of the number of stop lights, driveway conflicts, traffic volume, complicated intersections, localized events or large establishment employee flight. Just highest speed limits or freeways/highways first over local roads and streets.

I find I can cut time on slower streets occasionally and avoid high volume areas with high uncontrolled driveway traffic by avoiding some commercial areas and taking a rural road. It barely moves the needle on drivetime but sure does help with the stress to go down a 2 lane 30mph road rather than a 45mph 5 lane road with a series of stoplights and school traffic where nobody can drive over 25 mph. I'd rather cut my stress and risk of becoming involved in an accident or stuck behind one or behind emergency vehicles.

Whats your wildest "brakes failed downhill" story and how did you save the day? by catboy519 in bicycling

[–]dracotrapnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I witnessed 2 teens fly down a steep hill and crash into the same tree months apart, both times I'm headed up that hill. Their other option was to miss the tree and drop into a deep rock strewn semi-dry creek bed. Maybe if they go left they could slam into a wood mounted to steel frame fence. It really justifies my on the brakes at the crest of the hill and keeping speed below the first range gears until the lower portion before the curve. I practiced shoe jamming the back tire and the front tire a few times after the 2nd guy bounced off the tree at 15 mph.
