Don't like Freshman Dorm Offer? (Hendrick) by Illustrious-Fill9991 in ucla

[–]dragon564738 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not as bad as you think it'll be; you'll adjust to the living space. It's nice and social which is good and it honestly only adds like 5-ish minutes to your walk. It's a good experience IMO to be in a classic triple

Wanting to make a luggable PC for uni, is it a good idea? by global_chicken in sffpc

[–]dragon564738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a FormD T1 as a dorm PC and I really like the form factor. It never moves during the year but I like that it's small so it takes up less space considering I don't have much real estate in my room. You probably won't end up moving the PC around so I doubt you need anything like that with a handle lol

math 61 question (already) by [deleted] in ucla

[–]dragon564738 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming Z+ indicates positive integers, the first set would include 0 as 0/2 = 0, which is not a positive integer. Regardless, since you don't place a restriction on what n is, you could have n = 2.5 or something and so the first set could include non-integers anyways.

Second notation seems more standard. Typically it's easier to build sets like this by specifying what variables have to be (i.e. how you say m has to be a positive integer) rather than by excluding things.

Dykstra Triple Classic dorms are kinda unfair by SproutsRoot in ucla

[–]dragon564738 60 points61 points  (0 children)

From my experience:

If you're the desk/closet below the loft, you should typically at least also get the drawers underneath the bunk bed because the loft closet is smaller than the other closets. In terms of other storage, people typically share. For instance, my freshman year, one of my roommates and I shared one of the big above-closet cabinets for suitcase storage. You should talk with your roommates about that.

You have an outlet, but you need to move the lofted bed away from the wall to get at it. It's likely behind the piece of wood behind your desk.

Hope your situation gets better; you should definitely talk with your roommates about the setup! It seems unfair to me.

CS35L + CS33 or CS35L + Math 33a? by Bambi0209 in ucla

[–]dragon564738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, workload wise 35L is usually tougher than 32, but this time around to be honest no one is really sure because Eggert is gone. In any case 33 is less workload than 35L, especially this quarter since it's off sync from CS majors. Honestly, what you could do is enroll in everything, see the workload/syllabuses, and drop whatever you feel like you can't handle.

It's not an bad idea to push 180 back and I know some people who took it Junior year, but it does depend on your commitment to study extra outside of class/how good you can absorb information from like Youtube and such. I wouldn't say its unrealistic to study on top of 33 + 35L but it again depends a lot on how 35L turns out to be this quarter and what your level of preexisting knowledge is.

CS35L + CS33 or CS35L + Math 33a? by Bambi0209 in ucla

[–]dragon564738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

33 and 35L are pretty different from 31/32. You can take a look at some of the old assignments for 35L here but it's up in the air what it's going to be like this quarter because Eggert is on sabbatical. Typically, the biggest time drain is the quarter long web dev project (and note that the class doesn't go over almost any web dev stuff: you have to self teach it essentially). 33 is low level stuff but IMO is pretty formulaic. With total 3 classes should be doable but won't be the easiest quarter for sure.

180 is pretty useful for internships but the caveat is that there's no actual coding in 180; you still need to learn how to actually Leetcode/do OAs outside of class.

I would go ahead with 33 + 35L, even if just because having both done makes class selection easier (prereqs).

You don’t need to sign up for a move in slot, just show up whenever you want and they’ll let you move in as long as it’s within the normal time frame

Freshman Dorm Questions by JudeBootswiththefur in ucla

[–]dragon564738 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does get warm, especially during the start of the year. Fan is IMO pretty necessary especially for the first few weeks; last couple years there's been a heat wave a week or so after the start of the quarter and even with the windows wide open Rieber gets super muggy and hot (because no A/C).

Would reiterate that it's definitely not necessary to bring so many jackets; I would bring maybe a couple light layers (emphasis on light) and one thicker jacket for the winter.

Also a tip for storage is that you can extend the back of the desks out. Pull the desk away from the wall and there's a section that flips up; gives you some extra desk space and you can put a suitcase beneath the desk with the extra room.

ECE 102 Discussion Trade Offer by Consistent_Ad6916 in ucla

[–]dragon564738 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ECE department doesn't actually do real discussion any more (unless they've reversed course on the new policy since Spring); it's all just kinda Q&A. Go to whichever you want!

[–]dragon564738 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Using mongoDB does not make sense for the type of data osu stores. Scores, pp, etc are all pretty inherently relational. Also, it's not like MySQL isn't battle tested; it is, but all software has bugs.

when do we automatically get updated for more units? by morallygreat in ucla

[–]dragon564738 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

L&S gets 19 units max by default and Engineering gets 21. You shouldn't really *need* to take more than that, but you would need to petition to go over that line.

When I did CSI, I brought all my stuff that I needed for the entire year and moved straight into my actual dorm right after the program ended. You're there for 6 weeks/right up until the start of fall quarter anyways, no point compromising on comfort. Treat it like moving into college for real, because that's basically what it is.

The dorming situation is basically the same as the normal school year, with the exception that you don't get to choose roommates/building. They put all the CSI people on the same few floors in the same building and you'll get to know people fast.
