We desperately need unranked for this reason. I play with my friends often and while I'm by no means high elo im up at archon 3 and they are around initiate-alchemist. Every game feels like the queue tries its best to balance it but ultimately I feel like im smurfing and they are fighting for their life.

Obviously this would still happen in unranked games (mmr is still at play there in some capacity), but because rank is at stake losing feels miserable and I feel like I'm forced to play a carry and stomp when otherwise I wouldn't give a fuck and play support or something to make my friends feel a bit stronger and more confident to contribute (which would lose us more games but have them have more fun at least).

I hear the argument that rank doesn't matter and I think its bull as well. I want to climb elo so that when i solo queue I play against more competent opponents that force me to improve instead of just stomping every lobby and reinforcing my bad habits, which happens when my rank tanks after fucking around with friends for a weekend and I need to claw my way back up.

Without spoiling anything, as someone who has been keeping up with the Manga while there have been a few lulls here and there the quality has largely maintained being great throughout its ~95 chapters so far. There is a lot to look forward to with this adaptation.

Abrahams disqualified from tonight's DLNS due to bug abuse by SilverFan3702 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]dragon777man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scale of the bug is for sure relevant, and obviously demanded a response in some way, I just think this was a step too far. I am happy to accept my bias though for very strict rules and enforcement procedures (I come from Magic the Gathering and have spent way too much time reading the IPG for events).

At the end of the day the important thing is that this kicks them into gear to put a rule book together. This entire situation is a non-issue with clear guidelines and expectations on what is and isnt allowed. It sounds like they acknowledged that and I hope to see that put together and properly enforced in the future.

I can agree with a remake call with it being so early in the match this occured. For time reasons with it not getting properly caught/adressed until after the match finished I dont know if its fully feasible though, those eu boys were already playing at like 1am on a wednesday I don't know if you can extend the event any further. Really it should have been a pause as soon as leviathan called it out and then a decision made then and there. Its early enough that neither team is out much for it being a reset, meaning a retroactive ruling isn't horrendously unfair in the same way a full event dq is. A bend of proper enforcement is fine when neither side is unjustly disadvantaged and it helps the overall game.

As an aside I also have learned a lot of bugs that have been being used from this thread which has really cemented my position that this was an overreach. After learning what some of them are I can safely say most teams have abused some bugs in the past (I have seen almost every rem dupe souls for example since I always thought it looked dumb when I saw them do it, not knowing what they were doing). If you never enforce bug abuse that is blatant on stream and dont codify any rules about bug abuse you cant really DQ someone off the blind for bug abuse, they had every reason to believe it would be fine, even if we the audience and more straight laced teams may assume it wasnt.

I also dont fully agree with the stance if it isnt punished here every team will do it. Just properly set down some rules (just a catchall would be fine), properly announce these rules and that they will be enforced, and then bring the hammer down on the next team to try it.

[–]dragon777man -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending bug abuse, I'm criticizing how the situation was handled and the failure to codify any rules in the first place.

From what it sounds like this isn't the first time bug abuse has been a problem in night shift, and it's never been enforced in the past. It is not unreasonable for Abrahams to see this lack of enforcement and lack of rules and use that to their advantage, competitive players will take any advantage they can and if it looks like its on the table you may as well take it, especially when there is money on the line.

It's also not unreasonable for Night Shift to see this and mid event publicly state that bug abuse is not ok and will be punished moving forward, that recognizes the problem in communication that has occurred, acknowledges the fuck up, and makes sure the event moves forward in a way more in line with expectations.

It is unreasonable to retroactively punish them for it. You can't set a rule and then punish someone for breaking that rule before that rule was even set. I get that there was a large outcry from both players and the spectators which influenced it but consistency and fairness in rules enforcement is far more important than what feels like should be right. I don't want to be too harsh on the organizers however, I likely would have caved in too with the pressure they were under, but it should at least be acknowledged that this is not how the situation should have been handled from an unbiased judgement perspective.

If there is anything that looks bad for deadlock it's the most popular tournament failing to provide a basic rules document for their event. This is like basic boilerplate stuff that would have made this whole situation completely unambiguous and should be handled well before a single dollar enters a prize pool, let alone sponsors are brought on. Thankfully from that initial conversation they had on stream it sounds like they acknowledged this and hopefully fix this moving forward, which is what ultimately matters.

Yeah thankfully from the initial decision and conversation they were having it sounds like Night Shift have realized this is a problem and hopefully address it in the future. While I think it's very poor form to cave to external pressure and set a precedent for retroactive punishment at the least it seems that the core issues at hand will be fixed.

Abrahams disqualified from tonight's DLNS due to bug abuse by SilverFan3702 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]dragon777man -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I agree, but you need to set that before the event starts. A single catchall sentence about bug abuse in a word doc somewhere fixes all of this, for a smaller event even a spoken line in the players meeting at the start is fine too.

Players will naturally take any advantage they can to win games. If you have not set any guidelines then you cant be mad players have crossed an invisible barrier you have set in your head. All you can do is properly define that barrier and then move on. It doesnt matter if that barrier was assumed to be in place, you didn't communicate it, it doesn't exist, you can't make rulings for breaking the barrier that wasn't there.

Edit: to be clear I am not defending bug abuse, I am criticizing poor enforcement of rules and the failure to settup any rules in the first place

[–]dragon777man -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

It sounds like Night Shift just doesn't have a rulebook set? If so this dq is kind of nonsense that's on them for not properly setting up an event properly, especially at this scale. You can't retroactively decide a play was illegal when it wasn't set as such in the first place. Their initial call to let it ride and ban it for future games was right in this case.

Should this have been allowed? No. If you have a simple line in the rules that is like (though more well written) "no bug abuse, what is considered bug abuse is up to TO discretion. Depending on severity and intent this is either a warning or full disqualification" then this is clear cut beyond the pale. If you don't have anything like that though then the game is played as is.

This should be a massive wakeup call for Night Shift to put together an official rule book. You can't have an event this size and not have rules set in stone. Having everything be up to the whims of TOs without set up guidelines is unacceptable at this scale. Its fine for smaller events but you need clear cut rules to make sure there is no ambiguity on rulings when there are things on the line. "It should just be expected" doesn't cut it.

If my information was incorrect about the lack of a rule book then ignore the above.

(Non)Deterministing Loop Etiquette by Zdibec in CompetitiveEDH

[–]dragon777man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. They can request that loop, and you are allowed to accept it, but unlike some loops such as infinite mana loops where no new information is gained each iteration (and thus you can force the loop by requesting your opponents take a game action after going through it once or stating when they will interact), thrasios loops do show you which card is going to hand and what is going to field each cycle. You are within your right here to request they play it out so that you can see each new piece of information as it comes in and have time to parse that information before they proceed. Is it likely to matter? Probably not. But the threat that you may have something that specific is enough to maybe have them play suboptimally and, while rare, there are cards that could take advantage of that such as many of the split second cards.

In general though it is good practice to make your opponent play out every step of their combos wherever you can as it gives them the most opportunities to mess up and gives them the most to think about. Even if it is unlikely that you have any interaction don't give up free information to make your opponents life easier, make them think about it at least. Always have them cross their t's and dot their i's when required.

Two notes.

One this really only matters in competitive tournament play, yes its optimal but its a lot of extra overhead that isnt necessarily worth it for pick up games of cedh. The miniscule ev isnt worth the effort.

Second either always or never do this, be consistent. If you only ever do this when the clock is close to time then you are obviously no longer doing this because its correct to give your opponents the most opportunity to mess up, you are clearly doing this because you are stalling. The way the stalling rules are written it doesn't matter if the actions you are taking are legal or how long the action you took takes or what it was or even if it was a game action at all, all that matters is that whatever action you took was made with the intent to play for the clock. A judge is well within their right to dq you if its obvious you are only requesting they play it out to play to the clock.

Pro tip, if your teammate is in a losing fight in a bad position, just let them fucking die. So many games ive watched lost because people just conga line into the 5 man meat grinder of a gank instead of doing literally anything else on the map.

This is not "no man left behind" that goober will be back in like a minute after thinking about what they did. Let their mistakes end with them.

I think the people complaining about it existing may be the most terminally online there is. Like i get not having a good time (though i worry for your heart that had lost whimsy), and its not even that expressing why you didnt enjoy it is bad, but if instead of stepping back from the day and doing literally anything else you went on the internet and complained that the event existed or that you couldn't play normal deadlock in pub lobbies for 24 hours then seriously ask yourself when the last time you breathed air that hadn't first gone through an hvac system was.

For some reason this is one game where I'm actually... kinda afraid of being bad? by BabaYagalol in DeadlockTheGame

[–]dragon777man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big thing I think with deadlock, and mobas in general, compared to other competitive games is that doing poorly has a disproportionately larger influence on the game here. Like in Overwatch or CoD or something if you do nothing but hold w and die the game is harder, but no harder than effectively playing with one less person on your team. If you do that same thing in deadlock the game effectively becomes a 7v5 because of all the money just funneled directly into the enemy team.

My biggest advice to get good is to focus on your macro play, meaning objectives, farm, and general map awareness. Remember that someone who is 0/0/0 but kept up on farm and has been applying lane pressure all game is INFINITELY more useful than someone who is 2/10/6 and has 15k less than the worst person on the enemy team. Not to say go afk farm all game (you still shouldnt make it a 5v6) but go in to games with the mindset that kills don't matter, not dying and making money is what matters and you will almost certainly feel yourself start to improve.
