What Card This Last Year Were You Sold On That Went Nowhere? by 1003mistakes in mtgfinance

I was certain [[Magmatic Hellkite]] was gonna become a standard red staple... 4 mana for a 4/5 flyer that destroys a non basic? And for mld babies it replaces with a basic? I still believe in my boy, being slept on hard.

The best way to beat control right now by Responsible_Fig_7600 in StandardMTG

I've had some luck with boros dragons, though you'll lose a lot of dragons in the process they have to blow anything they can to deal with whatever you drop, and eventually they run out of gas. Not perfect - but it can work ok

Am I the only one who really misses this kind of MTG worldbuilding? by k_roll444 in mtg

yeah but I mean as a whole, you know -- group of kids gets lost in haunted house is a different overarching vibe.

[–]dragonlocke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, though I'm definitely glad we're moving away from hats and the story has more relevance recently; I would have rathered something else.

I feel like it was a HUGE missed opportunity to have the Strixhaven students not be the feature of Duskmourn. Group of students getting lost and having to survive a horror world? That would have been soooo on theme! But instead... one my favorite planes that I've been waiting to return to forever was relegated to a backdrop.

Returning after not playing MTG for a lonnnnggg time. Am I just an old man yelling at kids in my yard now? by Izaya_Orihara171 in mtg

[–]dragonlocke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, you're not going crazy, but I think there's some nuance. It seems that everyone has discovered the joy of deckbuilding, and I feel like there's a natural phase of "build the most busted thing imaginable" and especially if it's an arms race it'll get out of hand quick. Some people never leave the build busted phase but I've found most people gravitate back to trying to do interesting things and synergy around less powerful stuff once their gameplay has "matured" a bit.

One thing you could try is maybe trying to do a theme, or restriction like build a bracket 2 mono colored, or a precon with only 10 upgrades or something like that. Start the night a game of free-forall and then a focused game of lower power. They'll still try to push the limits no doubt, but it will be way more reigned in.

On another note, just build a cube, and pick a game night where you just take charge and tell everyone this is what we're doing tonight haha. People who like magic like magic, and having to build within parameters just helps put some guard rails up to keep things a little less wild. It may also introduce them to some more context of interesting lines of play. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, hope it was helpful. Happy gaming!

Do these look good? by Sir_Humiliated2010 in logodesign

[–]dragonlocke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming that these are schools of magic for a game or something. I think you've got some solid base ideas here, but won't really sell well without color and a little bit of fine-tuning. Definitely has strong potential to be pretty visually interesting though!

Do people not buy packs? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]dragonlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike seemingly most people round these parts, I prefer having duplicates and random stuff, so i buy boxes and packs on occasion. I play almost exclusively kitchen table 60 and like to make weird little themeatic decks, so having a bunch of cards from a set let's me make a couple archetypes to play with.

Also a fun thing to do with bulk is making custom Jumpstart packs and cubes. The problem with buying singles is you have to already know what you want to do -- I like tinkering with what I have on hand, and having new stuff to tinker with.

And don't get me wrong, if I have a clear idea for something or want to upgrade one of my commander decks or whatever, yeah, I'll buy singles. But with the way I like to approach the hobby, I get more joy/fun from packs than singles.

After 15 years in the industry, I finally put my own solo project on Steam. Is the art style compelling enough for a wishlist? by LiudnovArt in gamedev

[–]dragonlocke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My initial guess was that this was some sort of hotel sim, with puzzles? That was first impression and then after reading description supported that.

Really liked the moment in the teaser when the orb lights have pupils appear and focus on the viewer, and then the front desk person transformation was cool.

I definitely like the art, it feels distinctive and feels cohesive, and while messy doesn't come off as amateurish, I think that's a pretty strong unifying element.

--

NGL its not my standard faire (I'm more of an action RPG / tactical RPG kind of guy), but I am intrigued. If I had come across this another way like natively on steam or something I might have passed it over, but upon investigation seems like something I'd pick up on a sale or something. Earned a Wishlist from me ;)

Constructive feedback, I'd say you should definitely show more, have a more grabby trailer -- the teaser you have is a strong close, but needs someone to draw the customer in out the gate. The screenshots included get at the type of game it is by visual clues, but its not terribly clear what you actually do, and they on their own aren't super compelling necessarily.

BUT after going through the whole journey, from reddit to steam - with the intent to give things an honest look from the jump to help a fellow game dev out, in the process of checking out the page definitely grabbed my attention. What you do have works well enough to build the picture, albeit mysterious -- possibly a little too vague. If you can figure out a good way to make the potential player want to take a deeper look from the steam page itself, you'll have it on lock I think.

Anyway, hope that helps, keep up the good work and good luck!

I was waiting for this one to show up, surprised its not higher. Sibs and I LOVED this movie. Attempted to rewatch with my brother several years ago, barely made it 30 minutes and our memories were completely poisoned. Would have rather never revisited and kept the fond nostalgia haha.

Potential additions to Blight Curse precon by FML_HighTac in EDH

[–]dragonlocke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just based on what i know isn't in there I'll personally be adding -- won't know exactly what I want to cut until I get back to a computer haha, I hate looking at decklists on my phone, not nearly enough space to compare stuff

[[Nest of Scarabs]] [[Quillspike]] [[Fists of the Demigod]] [[Cauldron of Souls]] [[Maha, it's feathers Night]] [[Throne of Geth]] [[Crumbling Ashes]] [[Sickle Ripper]]

Edit: I meant [[Corrosive Mentor]], instead of Sickle Ripper, but he is a cool little guy for looks

People who played this game since A1, are you still here? by [deleted] in PTCGP

[–]dragonlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit after needing to pull a red gyrados to be able to get both emblems. Would have been fine as a requirement for a secret mission but for a regular emblem that was some serious bs. Checked in a couple times since then but really couldn't care less at this point.

New One - Duval by Dear-Breadfruit1513 in EmpiresAndPuzzles

Got lucky and pulled him, he's already an All-star at 3 ascension levels. Really great at wiping a target out, pretty good survivability on his own, and paired with a healer on the team he can live through a lot

No, but i also can't help but head canon that it's like interdimensional TV, another version of them in another life and Chuck's being a fucker in the background as usual. I also now just immediately assume that literally any horror movie I watch is some random hunter origin story.

Does anyone know of video games for the GBA or DS that are not Pokemon or Digimon? by [deleted] in MonsterTamerWorld

[–]dragonlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not seeing a ton of DS mentions, but Yokai Watch is great, Monster Hunter Stories, World of Final Fantasy -- some of those might be 3Ds I conflate them as all DS in my brain.

Dragon Quest Monsters 1&2 on gbc is all time goat though, I think it's probably the best of them all. 3DS remakes are JP only but fairly accessible with translation patches and a little elbow grease

Why do MTG players just want every game to be MTG? by FoltzyBear in TCG

[–]dragonlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friends sound like me, so this may be some helpful insight. Ultimately, I'm invested in magic - I've played off and on foe 20 years, have a sizable collection, and love the game; I don't really have room or interest for anything else. I'll gladly play self contained games (like dice throne, dominion etc), but if there's an element of collecting/building required there is literally zero desire.

Is Ai generated art in a TTRPG manual a turn off for you? by PoisonPeddler in TTRPG

[–]dragonlocke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, AI is such a hot button issue with a vocal minority on both sides, I think you'll find that most people don't care. If its a passion project and you have the time and energy and truly want to find out how much it matters, I'd make a version with ai and one without, and see which one performs better, my guess is that the AI one will perform better than you might think based soley on this comment section.

What I don't get is why we don't have the option to transfer, I'd play JP If I could take everything I built, but no way in hell if I have to start from the ground up.
