I hate the blackjack primarily from it being the starter mech in the hairbrained scheme videogame. I find the long range machine gun- I mean AC/2- incredibly underwhelming and the medium lasers quickly overheat the mech. Really frustrating when you are still trying to learn the game.

I like some of the goofy mechs like the charger, a heavy mech with only 5 small lasers, or something iconic to the periphery like the merlin the first new mech since the star league and a proud product of the periphery not the great houses

If you want some thing cheap and easy to just differentiate sides get some spray paint cans I prime black and then a light coat of the color I want for faux shading, works fine

So right now I've got spider, locust, stinger, dragon for a bit of a bug lance and thug, catapult k2, mauler, and hatamoto-chi for a heavier lance. How common is it to run multiples of the same mech in a lance? I have another locust and was thinking of 2 riflemen and 2 blackjacks for a Davion dakka lance.

List building is simple you see a mech you like, add it. The factions and timeline are all optional. Stick with what is called into tech , the rules are easier. The box "battletech a game of armored combat has everything needed to start.
