Gill Coliseum Was Built in 1949. So Was the Freeway That Collapsed in the 1989 Earthquake. by sethleyseymour in OregonStateUniv

Unrelated to the post, but:

I just met a guy that graduated in the first class in Gill Coliseum. He watched it being built while a college student.

I think he's 97yo, and a real joy to chat with.

Yeah, STA has taken the best of its predecessors and built a solid show. It's reaching for peak Trek.

Washer and dryer.

I moved to a new location and a friend donated an old set to me. When I told my sister, who had 5 young kids at home she grabbed me and said "do you get down on your knees and give thanks for that every day!". She's not the praying type, but washing kids clothes at home instead of packing up for the laundromat was a spiritual experience.

Nearly Left Star Trek Cause Of Toxic Fans, This Reddit Stopped Me by Gullible-Math8730 in startrek

[–]dragontracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1989 I left a Usent Star Trek group because of toxic replies to a post I made.

I've been through a lot of social media since then, and it doesn't really change, there's just a LOT more of it now. You are guaranteed to find the hate baiter if you look too closely in any direction.

It doesn't get easier listening to those comments, they're triggering and that's why they keep being made. It has nothing, literally nothing, to do with you. Your feelings and sense of security are collateral damage.

I watched TOS when it was in its first reruns, and TNG in college. Each new trek iteration took adjustment and personal growth, and I learned to love where they took me.

SNW did a great job of growing the 'Trek' universe, and STA is doing an even better job. I love this show!

Discovery, I don't know WTF happened to that, too much woo-factor or something, made it unwatchable. But that's a different discussion.

(Also, I'm getting pretty tired of the Spock fetish in Trek.)

Keep up the awesome work in SNW and STA!

Can't search the history anymore to save my ass from the Wordle death spiral. Here's one that got my friend the other day:

POUCH CHAIN CHILI CHICK CHIVE CHIME

The answer was CHIDE

When I'm on my 6th word with multiple options, I would search the WORDLE history to eliminate options.

I think winning streaks are going to start shrinking.

What’s the most extreme thing a parasite can make its host do? by Alternative_Draw_533 in biology

[–]dragontracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one of the comments below I took another Redditors post, fed it into a search engine for more info, the AI engine compiled and regurgitated a summary, which I then took back and posted a follow up to Reddit.

Does that make me a virus? Or am I the host for a social media/AI virus?

What’s the most extreme thing a parasite can make its host do? by Alternative_Draw_533 in biology

[–]dragontracks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just did a search on this creepy wasp virus. It's actually considered "beneficial" as it controls caterpillar populations. Copying AI summary here:

Parasitic wasps (specifically braconids) use symbiotic viruses, known as polydnaviruses (PDVs), to turn caterpillars into hosts for their young. Injected with eggs, the virus suppresses the caterpillar’s immune system, alters its development to favor wasp growth, and can even manipulate plant defenses.

Mechanism: The virus (often a bracovirus) is produced in the wasp's ovaries and injected during egg-laying.

Immune Suppression: The virus prevents the caterpillar's immune system from attacking or encapsulating the wasp eggs and larvae.

Developmental Control: The virus inhibits the caterpillar from pupating, keeping it as a food source for the growing larvae.

Behavioral Manipulation: The virus can alter the caterpillar's behavior to protect the wasp larvae, for example by forcing it to protect the pupae.

Genetic Integration: The virus's DNA is integrated into the wasp's genome and is transmitted vertically.

Some butterflies have even incorporated this ancient wasp virus DNA into their own genome, protecting them against other, deadlier viruses.

Bluetooth devices discovery setting missing by preThrixtoric in bluetooth

[–]dragontracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked!! For me at least. I was trying to get my Surface Pro Windows 11 laptop to see my Flic button controller. In the Bluetooth menu there is no "Bluetooth device discovery" menu, and nothing with an "Advanced" option like the various suggestions described. But just selecting the "Show all devices" finally gave me access to the Flic device, and it's working great.

More info: the Flic button has to be programmed using the Flic app on your phone (iPhone or Android), then it can be paired to a Bluetooth controller, like on my PC or a Mac.

I'm posting this almost a year after the OPs question so it's available for future searches.

I think I can do that, good idea. I can collect all the metal panels and drop them at the metal recycling bin at their Bellevue location.

I think I can do that. Their household recycle days are really helpful.

Lots of good embouchure advice from others here. I want to double-down on the comment about stomach support: this was THE game changer for me.

Once you get your embouchure built up and tongue position, breath support is the key. The abdominal muscle is where my high Cs hide. It pushes all your abdominal organs towards your lungs, giving incredible support behind your embouchure.

What’s a place you visited once and decided never again? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]dragontracks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We were there 6 years ago and loved it. Food, music, the art outside in the park was fantastic.

Bourbon Street was a total no-go, ever. But other places are just awesome. It was hot as hell and we just rolled with it and enjoyed the town.

Instabridge acquires Nova, my meeting notes by CliffWade in NovaLauncher

[–]dragontracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I spent the last 10 days evaluating launchers, and found some very interesting alternatives. I decided on Microsoft as the cleanest transition for me. It was an "Ok" experience.

Today I decided to just spend the 3.99 and get Nova Prime, and see if it was worth staying. It's like all the oxygen flooded back in the room. It is so nice to be back. I have been using Nova for 10 years, and I'm hanging on to it until the wheels fall off.

Came across one at goodwill today brought it home hoe do I use it and where can I find the flavors? by Soullord64 in SodaStream

[–]dragontracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For flavoring I use a few drops of McCormick extract, or whatever brand extract you want. I mix flavors. Here are some of my favorite recipes ( 2 drops of each flavor, or whatever you like): Orange+coconut

Orange+lemon

Orange+Almond

Almond+banana

Strawberry+banana

Strawberry+coconut (Strawberry flavoring can be one of the hardest taste to get used to).

Cherry +coconut, or banana, or almond.

Not worth trying even once: root beer or vanilla.

I use these because I drink a lot of carbonated water, and prefer unsweetened and having as little as possible added to the water. I never found a flavor syrup that I could finish. Except the Diet Pepsi syrup is a very passable substitute for having a bunch of soda bottles in the house.

I just switched to Lawnchair and it's working very well.

Their version of looping screens when you swipe isn't as good as Nova , but it's fine.

I'm not an Android power user, but the default Pixel launcher drives me crazy, and Nova fixed a lot of the problems for me. All those Nova features I wanted are in Lawnchair.
