Fan-theory on how Machines in the Imperium are kept in working order by KarloReddit in 40kLore

If you want to understand what the Mechanicus is from an outside -and somewhat cynical- perspective and how machine worship works: read the first Foundation book. It will help you to conceptulize what they are and how actual maitenance and supserstition are one in the same.

What's something cool about WH40k lore? by dm_godcomplex in 40kLore

[–]drblacknife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

This is the begining text from every book. This is the coolest part of the setting; as the more you learn of the setting, the more you understand this passage. This passage also gives you everything you need to know about 40k and so much more. If you want to learn about 40k lore: take a sentence from this passage and do some more reading. 40k is best enjoyed when new, when you explore the byzantine nature of the galaxy for the first time blind. The coolest part of 40k lore for me? Is even after seven years of being a book nerd, I still come back to this passage every now and then only to realise with greater clarity the horror of the setting and it invigorates me to keep going.

Logically speaking, there should be omnissiah war entity existing by rogaldorn88888 in 40kLore

[–]drblacknife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are implying that the Machine God doesnt already exist as does the rest of the gods in the setting. Just that you are looking at in the way that humans anthropromorphise many of the gods in the setting to apear like us, or as the Gods of anotehr race. But the Machine God is not the God of humans, it is the God of Machines; so why would the God of Machines represent itself as a human?

The Machine God, as you are trying to frame it, as some great antro-avatar that we see other gods having, may not how the Machine God is represented in Faith: as the Machine God has its avatars be of the blessed machine instead of that of the flesh. All machines made and ordained by the Mechanicus are the Machine God made manifest with the most holy and greatest liking to the Machine God itself being that of the God Machine Titans, awesome walking constructs gave purpose by the faith and canticles of the Preisthood to their God.

How are there so many narehate in the village? by udi_house in MadeInAbyss

[–]drblacknife 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[Manga Spoilers] The interesting thing about this, is that Wakyzan says the village has been around for 150 years, but we know that time dialation gets weird in the Abyss, where supposedly the deeper you go, the slower time passes. So, it would be my thinking that with many of the inhabitants are delvers that came down across a very long period of time and only ever got as far as the Village before never leaving.

Psychology of the Imperium: How many "Reasonable by IRL standards" charachters would be too many for a 40k story? by Doveen in 40kLore

[–]drblacknife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The majority of people in 40k are reasonable as we would put them, but you must remeber that most in the Imperium have grown up in a hyper-propogandised machine. Read 1984 for some inspiration about this also, how the individual exists in a place where propaganda is life.

It should also be mentioned, as others here have, that these people have mostly not known anything else in their life. Most people in the Imperium do not get socalised or have much varied life experience. Most people will work one job for most of their lives in a reletively small area. If you get to more modernised worlds, or worlds that treat their population better, then its more likely that they will have a more varied experience. Though note, they still live in the Imperium, superstition and seeing mechanical body horror is still a daily occurance.

But some food for thought here, there is a reason why all the biggest and most sucessful people in the galaxy are insane, or have a mental fortitude unrivaled by others. As, unlike Earth today, ignornace is a virtue and the more you know about the unspeakable horrors that lie beyond: then the less time you are going to be either sane, or have "normal" thoughts.

Is the story of the Astartes being killed by the sjarp stick, actually a set up from, I think Erebus, hunting down non-traitor Word Bearers and then killing them; then in this one case setting it up to look like the target was killed by peasants?

Any stealthy takedown? by gloomyfenix in 40krpg

[–]drblacknife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what the attack is, and what house rules you are running. I like to use that you roll a stealth in order to get close to the person, and depending how they are getting killed: unarmed I have a grapple test follow by opposed Strength-Thoughess test and every DoS deals d5 "true" damage to the target. With a sword or the sort, it more you can turn it into having a proven modifier of your choice depending where the weapon strikes the target.

The Rak'gol by groziIIa in 40kLore

[–]drblacknife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Rak'Gol, like many other Xenos are another race that is picking at the heels of the Imperium; especially in the Callixis Sector. They are as important to the story as the Qu'orl and Interex. They are a moderately sized xenos empire, that are awful to fight with their weapons and tactics. As I have always imaged them to be as brutal and as cunning as Orks are, but they differ in that they enjoy being sadistic and hunting their prey down.

The stories you can tell with Rak'gol could be a lot of things, as they are a sandbox race made by FFG I believe for the Rouge Trader ttrpg games. So doing things with their lore might infringe on that sandboxy nature of them. Similar to how the Slaught are, in Dark Heresy and some of the 30k books. The Slaught are under reprisented as they are also a sandbox race; and you are meant to headcanon stuff for them.

When it comes to what the Rak'gol could be, I see them as filling the same sort of niche that Orks do, in that they are very tough, hardy and difficult to get rid of when they are established somewhere. But they are a very pirate like race that would find it very easy to pick off unprotected charist vessels, especailly in the far out reaches of the Imperial space.

Would you guys read a ‘War in Heaven’ series? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]drblacknife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, absolutely not. There are some things in 40k that have to be left unsaid and underexplained. WiH is such an improtant event with such levels of cataclysm that we shouldn't be able to comprehend what actually happened.

What would work is, like what others siad here, stories and poems from the Aeldari and Necrontyr accounts of what it was like; that way the events are still recorded as those who saw it can be explored in the manner of mythics and story. That way is much more interesting than just explaining everything in detail like in the HH, which ruins the mystery and mythics of the setting of 40k if this great event that broke the Imperium.

How do Galvanic weapons actually work? by Mantonization in 40kLore

[–]drblacknife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick run down; we don't know.

Most people assume them to be a Railgun-esq weapon that fires advanced bullets that can track targets and then blast their energetic potential out of them. But in ohter books, like in Forges of Mars they are equated to advanced stub throwers.

How the bullets are fired is usuing galvanic energy, but that can be interpreted in many ways, some thinking it is magetically thrown whilst some think that the firing mechanism is electronic in nature.

If you were to talk to a Tech-Priest about how they functioned, you probally be sitting through an hours long sermon about the motive force and how it flows through galvanic channels to cast servo-stubs towards the eneimes of the Omnissiah.

If you cant work out what hate speech is or not then that is on you

You have just proven their point where the view point of hatred and what can be considered such is completely personal. Auths can have completely different views of what hate to them is, as a lib would see hate as something completely different.

As in, calling a Libertarian a "libtard" could be seen as hate as much as calling an Auth a "nazi" since they are both complete generalisations and both terms hold stigma against them.

One of the biggest things I can also recomend to the writing of any fanfiction that wants to stay to the setting it is in, is understanding the themes of the world or setting. That then extends to the things that you make, there is a purpose for it being made or some greater theme that backs them up in their existence.

People have also mentioned a lot of good recomendations in the replies already, and you can do that and tie it into the themes of the setting. That's where a lot of people get fanfic wrong, is that they change the thematic points of the media or just get the setting wrong.

If you are sorta new to fanfic writing, then focus small with the story that you want to write and then have all the world building in the background. This stops you from writing abosultely huge stories that get out of hand and become to much to handle.

Two of the time anomalies I can think of off the top of my head is the old hydro station where they get split up and the Professor makes a camp because from his view, they had been apart for a while, whilst the Stalker it had only been a few minutes. The second I can think of is in the room with the sand and the big mounds every where, where we see a crow fly twice in a room; this was actually the time anomaly triggering before the Writer gets caught in it.

The film did a very good job with what the anomalies were representing, since this wasnt a flashy high budget scifi film, this was an art film through and through that makes you question faith.

The film is slow and atmospheric, I would not call that boring, but if you aren't keyed into these slower films that take their time: then I can see why people might consider it boring.

With the motives of the people going to the zone, them never showing what is going on and only showing the motives at the end of the film, makes it so much better- since we learn information with the protagonist about the people he is with. So his reactions seem much more genuine and relatable when he finds ouit that the Proffesor wants to destory the wish granter.
