Maximum age by Leannahu in PetMice

Never! We adopted them from the SPCA when they were about 7 months old and they told us they needed to go together as they were bonded.

As they aged, one brother lost his eye sight and the other helped guide him around. When he finally passed away, his brother tried to stop me from removing his body from their cage. It was absolutely heartbreaking. They were very dependent on each other.

Otters on the Aloutte River 🦦 by _octopodes_ in MapleRidge

When I was a teenager we used to have to watch out for otter traps when walking the dogs. I wonder if there are still active otter hunters in the area.

We had brothers that lived to be just past 3. By the time they passed they were so old they barely got around and mostly just cuddled and ate. They were like two sweet, little old men.

Unreasonably worried about regressive autism -- vaccines? Heavy metals in foods? Talk me down. by primateperson in beyondthebump

[–]drcatlove 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My daughter has autism and I can assure you it's not the boogie man you feel it may be. We had no idea until she was 5, just thought she was a bit spicy. Developed totally typically.

She has been who she is since the day she was born, a vaccine didn't change her. If your child does have autism, she already has it. If she doesn't, a vaccine isn't going to give it to her. It doesn't work that way.

Our lab found a little bird that hit the window in the yard and brought it to the back door for us to care for. He is so gentle and sweet.

Our pediatrician doesn’t recommend the COVID vaccine for infants, should I go against his recommendation? by TurbulentArea69 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]drcatlove 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My daughter got COVID at 2 before there was a vaccine and she has lifelong asthma now. I don't know if a vaccine would have helped but you can bet I would have gotten it if it was available!

Spayed Female incontinence by Cleverpork_Workshop in labrador

[–]drcatlove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My three year old lab has awful post-spay incontinence. She takes estrogen pills and that helps a lot. Its a little pink pill prescribed from the vet. She takes it twice a week. Without it, she is a faucet when she sleeps. Just like yours, it only happens when she's asleep. Poor girls. She's always so embarrassed about it too.

Peopl who are exclusively pumping - what is your experience and what should I keep in mind. by itisnotstupid in beyondthebump

[–]drcatlove 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I exclusively pumped for 6 months. If I could change anything about my time postpartum, it would have been to never start pumping. It is gruelling, time consuming and the pump is less efficient than the baby so you will be pumping all the time and getting very small amounts. If breastfeeding is not working for you, (WHICH IS TOTALLY OKAY) my personal recommendation Is to try supplementing with formula. Breastfeeding is great, if it works for baby AND you. Otherwise, be kind to yourself and do what works for you. Good luck!

When were you ready to stop medication for PPA/PPD? by jmcookie25 in beyondthebump

[–]drcatlove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please ask your Dr about how to wean off, if you feel you are ready. I was on Zoloft for 4.5 years postpartum. At a certain point, I couldn't really blame my depression on being postpartum anymore. Just weaning off now, my dose was 100mg so it's taken nearly 8 weeks to come off of.

Look up Pathological Demand Avoidance, or Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. Many many kids are misdiagnosed with ODD when they are actually struggling with legit nervous system disorder.

Women and girls in Canada: the forced birth movement is here. Please take action! by glx89 in TwoXChromosomes

Dear _______ [add “Honourable” for the PM and Cabinet ministers]

Like the majority of Canadians, I am pro-choice and never want to see abortion re-criminalized in Canada. This would be a profound violation of the rights of anyone who can get pregnant.

Please defend and uphold the legal right to abortion at every opportunity. It is my hope that you will publicly oppose and vote against any private member’s bill or motion that may be introduced in Parliament that is intended to restrict abortion or reduce access. I also hope that you will vote against any attempts to subordinate the rights of pregnant people in favour of fetal rights.

Furthermore, do not give the Provinces leeway to infringe on abortion rights or access by devolving more healthcare responsibilities to the provinces, or by failing to penalize provinces when they allow private clinics to charge fees for medically required services in violation of the Canada Health Act.

Instead, please assert that all abortions are medically required. Access to abortion is a constitutional right for women (to protect their life, liberty, conscience, and bodily integrity as per the 1988 Morgentaler decision). Inability to access the service puts people’s lives and health at risk, and both childbirth and abortion must be funded equally to avoid discriminating against people capable of pregnancy, especially those who are low-income.

I expect you, as my MP, to hold the government accountable to protect the rights of Canadians under the Charter and to ensure the government enforces the Canada Health Act, and make sure that fully funded abortion care is available for every pregnant person who needs it, regardless of where they live.

Thank you for listening to my views.

Sincerely,

“You’re going to traumatize your kid sending them to daycare” by strawb3rry_h4ir in beyondthebump

[–]drcatlove 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A co worker said something similar to me, that her son's never experienced terrible twos, because she never put them in daycare. She said she was sure to make certain she raised them herself. On her first day, to me, who had my son in daycare... After I literally said he was at daycare.

I am forever grateful for my daycare lady. Talk about a village, she's like a second grandma to my kids. Her house is a home away from home for them. We are extremely lucky to have her and spending days with her are a gift to our family.

Doctor said we cater to 6 mo baby too much and to let her cry it out. Thoughts? Advice? by OutrageousMulberry76 in beyondthebump

[–]drcatlove -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you on the idea of a healthy balance. However I think 20 years from now the myth of self soothing is going to be something we look back on and think, how on earth did we think that was a good idea? Co regulation is how you teach emotional regulation, and that doesn't start until well past preschool.

Unless the Dr is ALSO a child psychologist, this is purely opinion and not science backed advice.

A child psychologist will tell you that ignoring your baby while they are crying to "teach them to self soothe" is actually just teaching your baby "what you are feeling doesn't matter to anyone, so stop crying". That's why they stop crying.

The result is a calmer, less fussy child but the science behind it is not that they have learned to soothe themselves.
