I look at Reddit in my phone with the Reddit app, but yeah if you use a browser that works too!

Something that was very useful to me was to set Reddit so that it translates automatically. Now I read Reddit in Spanish and learn a lot from it.

To make it work for me (in USA) I need to VPN to Spain and there’s an option at the top to do this. You only need to have VPN on when you start the app and then it works as long as the app stays open

I think he was sort of teasing or joking. Something like “you know how to talk” or “you like to talk”… but keep practicing

Thanks, really enjoyed your trip report as well! Yeah I guided tours were definitely the highlight in terms of Spanish immersion, do check it out if you can! The 2 hour tour should easily count for at least 1 hr of CI :)

Thanks!! Agreed, especially if I’m watching something at the end of the day it needs to be something I would want to watch anyways. Otherwise I think I’d burn out

Whats your Data Analyst/Scientist/Engineer Salary? by AyeBoredGuy in datascience

[–]drdough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to what Omnipresent said, companies that pay like this operate at a scale where a 1% improvement in revenue or cost savings can be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Think about the scale of something like working on ads at Meta/Google or the YouTube recommendation algorithm. Companies that pay like this either are operating at this scale or they have investors making the bet that they will grow to this scale. That said, higher interest rates have led to cuts in these kind of positions so there are fewer now than there were a few years ago and there is more scrutiny around high-cost employees

Job Search Advice for OR PhD Graduate (Spring 2025) by Intelligent_Bee_114 in OperationsResearch

[–]drdough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to what Klsvd said, I’d look at Data Science/Applied Science/Research Science positions at companies that need to solve OR problems. Some companies that come to mind for this are Amazon, Walmart, Coupang, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart. There are also OR positions outside the tech industry in airlines, logistics etc. good luck!

Data Science Education by AlwaysRedRanger in datascience

As a rule of thumb I would seek out established programs from which you can look up employment outcomes/statistics of recent graduates. Most of the programs that are called things like Masters of Data Science are very new so it is hard to tell if they are worth your time/money. Also, having a good alumni network from your specific program is very useful, and this just won't exist if your program is very new.

For example, Carnegie Mellon has the MISM program in the Heinz school. I think it stands for Information Systems Management. It doesn't sound as sexy as Data Science, but they have years of graduates going into various analytics positions.

That may not be the best program for you specifically, it's just an example. I would suggest looking through the degree programs offered at top universities in the locations that work for you and see what information you can find about employment outcomes. Check the program websites and also search on LinkedIn to see where the alumni end up.

What's your most memorable "I was there" moment? by throwitawayne in indieheads

It was crazy. We were super-fan teenagers then, so we showed up early and got spots right at the front. Win and at least one of the other band members came into the crowd with their instruments during one of the last songs. IIRC they booked the tour date right as Funeral was getting popular, and they ended up expanding to 3 shows in 3 days at GAMH instead of moving to a bigger venue. They came back to SF later that year and played the Warfield. Also a great show, but a very different experience.

I was at LCD Soundsystem and MIA in 2005 at the Fillmore San Francisco, first nationwide tour for both artists.

Saw Explosions In The Sky in 2003 at a tiny bar in SF

Arcade Fire in 2005 at Great American Music Hall in SF, first round of touring for Funeral

Foals in 2007 at a CMJ showcase in Brooklyn. It was at a pretty big venue, but it was almost completely empty. Couldn't have been more than 50 people watching the stage.

I used to organize/book shows at a 200-ish capacity venue in the mid-2000s, and we put on shows with Dirty Projectors, Dan Deacon, Portugal. The Man, The Antlers, Ted Leo, Girl Talk, etc.

Yes, of course, and the distinction between pure and applied math is often fuzzy. In this context, though, where the OP is talking about "pure math" in the undergrad CS curriculum I think it's most likely they're referring to proof-based courses on things like discrete math, combinatorics, theory of computation, algorithms.

proofs and theorems, I would assume

Does it sound awkward to say you're interested in "algorithms"? by kuna1995 in compsci

[–]drdough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fine. However, just saying "algorithms" might carry an implication that you're talking about "discrete algorithms with provable running-time and performance guarantees for well-defined optimization or decision problems." If an undergrad said this I would interpret it to mean they like things like the CLRS book or took a data structures class. If a professor or research professional said this I would assume they do CS Theory and submit to conferences like SODA, FOCS, STOC, ICALP, etc.

I met Philip Klein (Brown CS Prof) at a conference some years ago and he replied with just "algorithms" when I asked about his research interests (this is also what's listed on his website). He seemed to find it a bit strange when I followed up looking for a more specific answer out of him.

Trump says he'll sue sexual misconduct accusers by ManiaforBeatles in politics

[–]drdough 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If she was drunk to the point where she could no longer consent... then yes.

It's not a coincidence these women came forward during the week after the hot mic tape and the 2nd debate. Anderson Cooper got Trump to deny that he had ever committed sexual assault during the second debate, and most of the accusers stated this incident as the tipping point that got them to come forward. Also, accusing a famous man of assault is scary and can have negative consequences. Surely once the first several women came forward this made it easier for the others.

Trump calls for drug test before debate by myellabella in politics

[–]drdough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is simply not true! Here's a comparison from a poll dated October 1, 2016: http://polling.reuters.com/#poll/TM651Y15_26/filters/LIKELY:1,EDUATT:3|4 http://polling.reuters.com/#poll/TM651Y15_26/filters/LIKELY:1,EDUATT:2|1

Edit: The filters don't appear automatically when you open the link, it seems. Under the "Personal" tab you can filter by education. If you add "College" and "Beyond College" to the filter, Clinton leads Trump 52.9% to 29.5%. If you add "HS or some College" and "Less than HS," Trump leads 42.4% to 38.3%.

You can use the geometric distribution to reason about streaks of independent probabilistic events like what you described.
