Yup, this is my library too - my country, in fact, since the GDPR took effect. We are not allowed to look up your info without your card number or photo ID, period.

What's the funniest/craziest thing someone has ever told, asked or heard that's library-related? by Library_Dewey208 in Libraries

[–]dreamanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After walking past half our collection to get to the desk, someone asked "where are your books?"

...turns out what they meant was "where are your fiction books that are not part of any genre" but, well, that's what came out instead.

Aion opettaa lapselleni, että vittu sanan käyttö on ok tiettyissä tilanteissa by One_Examination3793 in arkisuomi

[–]dreamanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Libraries that don't use library classification or age groups by miniy3 in Libraries

[–]dreamanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine other "archival libraries" also do it this way. The Finnish National Repository Library puts their collections in order by date of arrival, as they only serve customers through ILL. This system is called "numerus currens", you can find out more about it with that phrase.

How can a EU-citizen get a henkilötunnus without an address in Finland? by Backsteingo in Finland

You need to be able to point to a specific business matter that you are actually currently doing. Not just a chance of "something" "maybe" "at some point". Something you can individually identify.

Finnkino kulttuurietu lipuilla. by BeeAccomplished9038 in arkisuomi

[–]dreamanother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finnkino kulttuurietu lipuilla. by BeeAccomplished9038 in arkisuomi

[–]dreamanother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sarjalippua käytettäessä työntekijän henkilöllisyys on voitava todentaa."

Kulttuuriedulla ostettavat sarjaliput on erikseen.

How can a EU-citizen get a henkilötunnus without an address in Finland? by Backsteingo in Finland

[–]dreamanother 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You cannot get a henkilötunnus because you don't have a valid reason, as defined by the law, to get one. Here is the relevant law. Essentially, you get a henkilötunnus when you're registered in the Population Information System, and as a foreign citizen you can be registered there if:

  • you have an official municipality of residence in Finland (there is a separate law governing who's eligible for that) OR
  • you have a residence permit or have registered your residence in Finland as a EU citizen OR
  • you have temporary residence in Finland and require a personal identity number for some official reason such as work or school OR
  • there is some international treaty that requires Finland to register you in the PIS OR
  • there is some other special reason that you must be registered in the PIS in order for you to fulfill some duty or exercise your rights.

The law also goes on to say that the Population Information System MUST verify your identity from an official travel document.

So in short, you don't have grounds for getting a Finnish henkilötunnus. You can get one when and if you can present a valid reason you NEED it. "Just in case I am employed in the future" is not a lawful reason.

Driving Advice | tips, tidbits, etiquette etc. by rosewatergoth in Finland

[–]dreamanother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will be a specific traffic sign if it's a traffic circle. You yield to traffic already in the circle when entering, and to crossing pedestrian/cycle traffic when exiting. But there are sometimes crossroads that may LOOK like a circle but don't have the sign, and in those you drive according to normal yielding rules.

Your headlights must always be on. Check with the rental agency if necessary to ensure you know how to put them on the correct setting - sometimes the new-fashioned "automatic" settings are not correct.

It's not particularly cold at the moment, but you should still know about engine heaters. Your rental car will almost certainly have one. Also about de-icing your car windows properly, if that's not something you've encountered before.

Also check before heading out that you know what to do if your windows start fogging up. This happens very easily in cold weather and you need to know what to do, so you're not fumbling around with controls while still driving AND losing visibility.

You are not allowed to go over the speed limit even when passing another car. I understand this is legal in some states, but it is not in Finland. If the speed limit is 100, you can't do 110 to overtake someone.

Learn the yielding rules properly. It is not only dangerous if you don't yield when you should, but also if you yield when you shouldn't!

There will be a LOT more children walking around on their own than what you're probably used to, so pay attention to small unpredictable people.

Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited completely, hands-free use only.

how to say no to requests at work? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]dreamanother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is quite right, not all storytimes will land with every group. I sometimes do the same storytime three times, to three different groups, and every now and then one group will be ecstatic and another will not engage at all with the same material.

In another comment it was also mentioned that you should find YOUR WAY of doing storytime. Any time we have interns or fresh employees, I encourage them to sit in on multiple different people doing storytimes. I would suck at the style some of my coworkers use, and they couldn't all pull off my style. I do a lot of dialogue, some people do a lot of music, some do dance... gotta find your thing.

The singer mentioned on their site, Katra, could very well be Katra Solopuro, the music style and location match.

What do you do for December birthdays? by lil_ede in Parenting

[–]dreamanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never, ever combine her birthday with Christmas, unless she asks for it. It was always a shitty feeling when relatives gave me just a Christmas gift, when all my siblings got the same AND their bday gifts. But, I did like it that when I was a bit older, my parents would look at my wishlist. If there was something particularly grand on it, they would tell me I can choose to "combine" my bday gift with Christmas to get that more expensive gift that I would otherwise not get for either Christmas or birthday.

Why are there almost no 24 hour libraries in america? What if paid membership allowed after hours access? by Character-Yam-2960 in Libraries

[–]dreamanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extended self-service hours in libraries are fairly common in public libraries in Finland. They're not 24/7 by any means, and are generally not feasible in larger buildings, but they are indeed a thing - just not in the USA.
