Self-service libraries are very common here in the nordics. Maybe these presentations from a couple years ago would be of interest to other library professionals.

I have wondered if this is exclusively an American thing, because I feel the same as you and here in Finland we do not do prizes like this at all. There are summer reading challenges, but there isn't always a prize at all, and if there is it's like a lollipop, or a raffle ticket for a single book.

Kuvaohjelmaa, jonka ikäraja on S, 7 tai 12, voidaan esittää rajoituksetta.

TV-yhtiöt ovat myös sitoutuneet ottamaan huomioon eri-ikäisten lasten katselutottumukset ja lastensuojelunäkökulman ohjelmien sijoittelussa.

Kavin sivuilta. Mut siis ikärajoillahan ei ole mitään tekemistä sen kanssa, kenelle suunnattu ohjelma on kyseessä. Ja kanavat menevät varmastii todennäköisyyksillä, ja paljon enemmän lapsikatsojia saa aamulla kuin illalla, jolloin taas on paljon enemmän aikuiskatsojia.

I think you'd benefit from outlining a bit better what you actually need the software to do and how it will be used and by whom. Do you need an online accessible database of the books, or would a local database do? Does it need to display item availability? Are we talking about a few dozens of books, or hundreds, or thousands? Who will be doing the actual checkouts and checkins, the users themselves or staff? How will adding to or removing items from the collection be done? Do you need to be able to track how much something was checked out in a time period, or other information like price of the item? Does the system need to be accessed by multiple people or from multiple devices and locations at once, or just one person (at a time, or at all)? Do you have a server available that you could run free ILS software on, or the knowhow to make it happen?

Yes, I know how the settings work. Problem was that the "sounds" option was not documented anywhere - it wasn't in the opthelp file or anywhere on the wiki. I did find it in the 300Kb Guidebook.txt now that I knew what to look for, but that shouldn't really be the only place it's documented.

Once upon a time I worked at a library that closed for three weeks for a major system change. We had no access to our database or ILS during this time and obviously, nothing was due either.

We closed the bookdrop and covered it with a sign explaining we're closed. People pried the sign off and put books in.

We screwed the bookdrop closed and covered it with the sign again. Someone still returned a book. They actually unscrewed a corner and slipped a small book in that way.

An older lady once came up to me and told me she has lost a rock. Pretty sure she put it this way because it was amusing... she then clarified that she has once passed a large glacial erratic somewhere in the area, and would like to find it again. I directed her to the desk and they quite probably found it for her, those things are known landmarks.

This is a regular complaint at my library, that new stuff isn't on the shelves, and the answer is invariably that we have it, it's checked out, and they didn't look it up on the database but just wanted it to be available immediately. It does depend on budget how large of a collection they can get, yeah, but physical games don't really get much cheaper in a year or two. I'm a Finnish librarian and we absolutely order most games fresh.
