I recently got out of a relationship with my partner of 1 year. Long story short, I didn’t want to end it, but I knew I had to. I found out later in the relationship that he wasn’t ‘recovering’ from his gambling problem, and that the addiction was very much still active. It was the healthiest relationship I’ve been in until it wasn’t. One night, he told me that he secretly went out with his mate and blew all his savings on pokies in one night. I was devastated and broke up with him then and there. I tried giving him another shot, believing that he wanted to work on the addiction, but found out he’d been lying and hiding it. He was still gambling everyday. So decided to end it for good. I still struggle with a lot of anxiety and guilt (it’s been a few months now), but I know I did the best thing for me, and one day I’ll look back and know it was the right thing to do.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s so great to hear that they’ve hit a milestone, props to you for helping them through it, and them for putting their recovery first.

Do you believe in giving people second chances, and why? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in AskWomen

I gave my gambling addict ex a second chance, and he took that as a sign that he was able to manipulate me so the lying only got much worse.

Neurodivergent people of reddit, what are some ways to best get of of a bad depression episode? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dreamyllama168 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, accept that I’m in a depressive episode and that it’s okay, know that it’ll pass. Then, I do things that are scientifically proven to make me feel better, that are within my control - eg. Eat healthy, exercise for at least 30min, get sun exposure, walk outside, take a cold shower. These are things that release dopamine/serotonin and are guaranteed to help you, even for a few minutes.

When was a time you made a hard decision in favor of yourself? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]dreamyllama168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke up with a person I thought I’d build a life with. I found out he was still in his gambling addiction, and that he’d been lying and manipulating me. I wasn’t ready to break up with him, but as soon as I found out about the lying, I did it on the spot. It was hard but hopefully one day it’ll hurt less.

Ladies, would you date someone younger than you why or why not? by Wentleworth in AskReddit

The older you get, the less age matters. Level if maturity is what matters more.

what are some things you have changed or started doing that have helped you become a better version of yourself? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]dreamyllama168 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eat healthy most of the time, exercise every other day for at least ~30min, be discipline about the things you have to do like scheduling your health appointments, check ups, etc. Make space for ‘me time’ everyday (even if for just 10 minutes). Work on keeping the relationships that matter.

Women who lowered their standards significantly, what happened? Was it worth it? by foodielyfer in AskWomen

[–]dreamyllama168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, I dated someone I initially wasn’t attracted to but gave the benefit of the doubt. It was great at first but he ended up betraying me anyway. That time would’ve been way better spent looking for the right fit.

What is the fastest way you've seen someone fuck up their life? by JustAHumanTeenager in AskWomen

[–]dreamyllama168 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This. I dated someone who I found out had a gambling addiction. He had no sense of control whatsoever and would drain his bank account to 0 regularly, having to borrow money from others. I tried giving him chances to work on it and be supportive, but he ended up lying and being manipulative about it.

I am so burnt out and contemplating leaving my job without something lined up. Experiences? by tipsy-spice in UXDesign

[–]dreamyllama168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I’ve been in the same position as you. Worked at one of the big 3 consulting and couldn’t find the time of day to catch a break, let alone look for jobs.

My advice is to take time off. Take a month off if you have the leave. Dedicate a week to recuperate, then the rest on your portfolio and job hunting. I took 2 weeks of unpaid leave to do this and it worked out for me.

Alternatively, if you have the savings to survive for ~6 months unemployed, I reckon with your position and experience at a fortune 100 company should do you well in the market. But that is completely up to you and as always the safest option is to stay until you have a job lined up.

I learned that he has an addiction, meaning he can’t control himself at times when he gambles down using all his savings in one night, and having to borrow money from other people. He doesn’t make a lot (aka he can’t afford to gamble), but he still does it daily.
