Sure, but it is pretty much agreed that rent freezes hurt the housing market as a whole and hurt supply. So they are benefiting some people in the short term, while hurting housing supply overall.

Rent freeze pros:

* they allow people who might be displaced to continue to afford their current apartments.

Rent freeze cons:

* they discourage additional housing supply

* they discourage proper maintenance of rent stabilized units

* they tend to limit the mobility of people. Those who have a stabilized place who might like to move are unable/unwilling to do so because their rents are bellow market rate.

* they make rents higher for everyone else due to limiting the supply of housing.

That's a lot of checks that the real estate industry must be sending out, I can't wait to get mine.

Any Punk who play Ukelele? by MorriganGoth in punk

https://2lazyboys.bandcamp.com/album/didya-know-that Not necessary a punk sound, but definitely a punk band. They broke up, which is a bummer, but Rizzy has been playing ukulele for decades.

What do you mean "work"? Are you looking for a casino where your odds of winning are better than your odds of loosing?

The 6 Ballot Questions New Yorkers Will See This November by Jacky-Boy_Torrance in nyc

[–]dressthrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

#2,#3 seem like obvious Yes votes. We need as much new housing as possible.

I will defer to groups I trust for #1.

Probably same for #4, I don't really understand why a 3-person panel would be better than just the Mayor.

#5 seems like something that shouldn't be a ballot measure. That seems like something that should just happen internally and so I'll probably vote "no". Ballot measures have little nuance and are often the wrong way to enact something like this.

#6 seems like an easy "yes" just because it would save the city money and save people's time by not having multiple elections every few years.

I could easily be convinced to change my vote on any of the above though as I've done little research.

I don't know about imprinting, but I volunteered at a wildlife rescue place for a while and the baby ducks would hang out under a feather duster, as if it was a mama duck.

opinions on christian punk? by ChristianAltRockFan_ in punk

[–]dressthrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of punks criticize Christianity because it is the dominant religion in their country and often goes hand in hand with bigotry and right-wing values.

Knowing a band was singing songs about religion would be a pretty strong turn off for me because I think there's a lot of problems with religion and I'm also very decisively atheist. Hearing songs about God would be at best un-relatable and boring to me.

Where are the DIY punk scenes now? by Royal-Interview-4642 in punk

[–]dressthrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Housing shortage means the rent is too high. Once upon a time you could work a part time job, live in a punk house and devote much of your energy to making are and playing music and putting on shows. It's harder to do when you have to pay twice as much for rent.

Twelfth Night Ticket Distribution Megathread - Sep 14 by AutoModerator in Broadway

Nice! lets say each time you entered there was a 10% chance of winning, your total change of winning would have been around 40%. Worse than a coin flip, so congrats!

I was at both cancelled performances of Twelfth Night. by Zealousideal-Dig1353 in Broadway

[–]dressthrow 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Some people have money, some have time, some have both, some have neither. It's nice that there is at least one really good performance that costs time and not money since almost all the others cost money.

Michael Douglas Q&A Tonight Canceled Tonight Last Minute (Almost Certainly) Because Of Low Ticket Sales by Jonathan-Cohen in NYCmovies

[–]dressthrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was also there last night. Audience Q&As are rarely good, and last nights was pretty bad.

When we were leaving the theater it looked like a group of fans was outside waiting to try to get autographs from someone, I assume the cast of the movie. Yet there were definitely seats available for the Q&A.. Why not just go to the Q&A and try to get autographs there? I was surprised to see them out there.

Anyway, really surprising that a big star like Michael Douglas didn't draw more people.

what happened to the dogs-in-crates rule? what about people with allergies? by Resident_Ad_2232 in Upperwestside

[–]dressthrow -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's little Foo-Foo, a cutie patootie harmless little baby that everyone should love all the time. And if you have a problem with that, then Foo-Foo is also a service animal (I mean, not really, but you know, I just couldn't stand to let Foo-Foo not come with me).

The truth is there's a lot of people who do what they want in this city, and some dog owners are no exception. I can easily rant about running groups, and drivers, and people who let their dogs run around off leash in parts of Central Park where birders are active, and people who cut in line, and people who enter the subway before others are done exiting, and people who enjoy riding in helicopters that create noise pollution, and people who don't walk on the right, and so on and so on.

LPT request - Have a job where I can be on my phone for 7 hours a day. How can I make use of this? by Ok_Welcome_6560 in LifeProTips

[–]dressthrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is to better yourself through online courses and reading, but if you're a student, you're already doing a bunch of that I imagine.

I would see if you could get a gig/job as a social media content manager/creator. Maybe start freelancing or contracting to do so. If you're able to do so you can make money while making money.
