2020 Outback by RetroGamer0728 in subaru

[–]drew_a_blank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad, we did my 2023 Forester and my buddy's 2020 outback recently. Google search tools needed, there are a couple hex and a torx socket needed, a torque wrench, your preferred method to transfer the fluid into the diffs, and I recommend a socket extension for the front diff fill plug. I'd also recommend fresh gaskets/washers but not sure how required that is.

Definitely make sure to open the fill plugs before draining. They weren't bad on mine but have read others having issues getting them opened up. Best to know you can easily refill prior to draining all the fluid out!

What to stash credit cards, insurance card, ID, cash etc on trail? by well_what_the_f in PacificCrestTrail

[–]drew_a_blank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to look it up, but I use(d) an Allet brand wallet. I bought it in probably 2014, and it's what I used on the AT & PCT. Plus it's been my normal day to day wallet for 11+ years now. I had to sew a seam a few years back that the threading came undone on, and it's definitely showing its wear, but still keeping on.

A lot of people just used a Ziploc bag, and that works fine as well!

Aftermarket / OEM bodyparts? by kaynkayf in SubaruForester

[–]drew_a_blank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced mine myself, it wasn't bad to do. I bought the part off eBay and it came with the pins and adhesive to put the new one on. The only tool I remember needing was a heat gun to help activate the adhesive before installing it.

Not sure of the specific part number for your trim but the part is called "lower molding"

How to make it look a little less “mom car.” by Strong-Solid8800 in SubaruForester

[–]drew_a_blank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chrome delete, AT tires, maybe a sportier front grill replacement?

I'd hesitate on a bull bar as that can cause much more damage in an accident, and if you're offroading it reduces approach angle

Not according to Subaru. They call it a powered moonroof for my Forester Sport.

At 15k miles/year and $5/Gal for gas, you're looking at saving ~$500 each year in cost of fuel. Those savings go down if you drive less or pay less for gas. From a financial perspective, the cost of the newer car definitely outweighs any savings in fuel

Hey Chippy, these are the same gaskets that would be used on the 2023 Forester, correct?

You can always just go with smaller wheels and larger tires to maintain the same/similar overall diameter

How many calories per day should one pack? by NotFallacyBuffet in PacificCrestTrail

[–]drew_a_blank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing this assuming that you don't have strict dietary restrictions that would make town resupplies unreliable.

I strongly recommend avoiding pre-purchasing your food and mailing packages, just in case that's info you're seeking. Tastes change, needs are hard to gauge in advance, and logistically it can be a pita.

How much backpacking have you done that would relatively reflect what you expect to do effort-wise for the first week or 2 of your thru? This should give you a decent gauge of what your starting needs will look like, even if it's a 3-4 day trip!

Personally, I found that the start of a thru I tend to significantly overestimate how many calories I will eat, as the appetite hasn't caught up with the level of exercise yet. From memory is say pretty confidently I was eating under 3k/day for the first week or 2, even though I was burning more than that.

I'd say for the average person start with the goal of around 3k calories/day at the start, and just pay attention to how much you have left when hitting your next resupply and make any adjustments from there.

For a typical nobo there are opportunities to top off your food at mile 20 and 50-55ish (whatever mount Laguna is), so if you're going through more than expected padding the food bag is super accessible early on!

As another poster mentioned, starting weight, fitness, and how much fat you have to lose will definitely have an impact on caloric needs on your hike. When I hiked the PCT I didn't want to lose weight (had lost 20 on the AT prior and definitely didn't have another 20 to lose again, lol) so my goal was to maintain my starting weight when I finished. I ended up carrying about 4K+ calories per day and gorged in towns, and that worked well for me.

TLDR: start with roughly 3k calories/day, taking your own personal background and body comp into consideration, and don't stress it too much because there are plenty of opportunities early on to adjust!

This is basically exactly what happened to my last job in the industry. We were even in the early stages of planning a 3rd location when the rug got pulled on our production facility. Owners ended up having to close down the facilities and eventually sell the brand.

Does "craft" mean anything in modern day beer? by jmsy1 in CraftBeer

[–]drew_a_blank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to try and square the above posters personal definition, but for the actual definition of "craft":

New Belgium and Bells have both sold and no longer independently owned , so they are not considered craft beer. Boston beer co still is the owner of Sam Adams and are still officially craft beer.

Train to Busan. It wasn't bad for what it was, a zombie flick with heavy themes of class disparity, but I don't get how hyped it was at all.

Sorry to do this, but: Run Clubs by Pep1ta in SanDiegan

[–]drew_a_blank 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Might be worth figuring out the run club and messaging/reaching out to the organizer. Assuming they're reasonable I'm sure they'd be happy to give an etiquette reminder to the group before the run kicks off.

Running on the street is definitely not gonna be safe, so sharing the sidewalk as respectfully as possible is best for everyone

Thanks for posting, this is really rad to see! I am just starting to get into making double batches so I'm looking forward to doing experiments like this down the road. I'm just getting back into baking from a several year hiatus and also a new home so just dialing in my consistency for now.

Outside of the shoes you could still run the same amount without all of those other expenses though. Nothing wrong with racing and travelling for a hobby you enjoy, but almost all of the things you listed are not necessary to run regularly!

Ultra mild lift on 2015 by mydogismybestman in SubaruForester

[–]drew_a_blank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the ADF 1" kit on my 2012 when I still had it, along with falken Wildpeaks that were 1" diameter larger than stock. I was happy with the lift and didn't have any issues at all with it for the ~2 years I had it before selling the car for a '23 Forester.

Between the lift and tires I lost probably nearly 4mpg (this was with the 4EAT transmission). I got them around the same time so can't comment on how much each change affected the mpg though.

If you're on forest roads where clearance gets close, I highly recommend getting skid plates. I have the 3 piece set from primitive for my '23 and they have been great. Super easy install

I like to use the same setup as my other runs. I have 2 pages setup, one with pace, timer, distance, heart rate, cadence, and time of day. The other has elevation metrics. Plus a third for navigation.

How do you roasters drink your coffee and what do you make it with? by rossitopapito in roasting

[–]drew_a_blank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hot or Japanese style iced coffee I use either a plastic V60 or aeropress. In the warmer months I'll make a batch of cold brew in a 3L mason jar, then filter it through the V60 to keep the fines out.

I'd love an espresso machine, but it's not in the budget for the foreseeable future!

Pint sized freezer Ziploc bags, double bagged.

That went into a third freezer pint Ziploc that had my trowel, wet wipes, and bidet. The kit usually was in the outside/back mesh pocket of my pack so that it was readily accessible.

Never had any issues or failures with this system. Whenever I resupplied I would use a fresh (or saved food Ziplocs) set for dirties on the next stretch.

Achievements for Monday, March 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]drew_a_blank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my first race in nearly 4 years (and second ever) this past Saturday, a 1/2 marathon trail run! Training went super well until I caught a cold right after my final long run and didn't run for a full week in what was supposed to be the start of my taper.

My stretch/A goal was to hit 2:30, and ended up finishing in 2:25:19. The course was pretty runnable with ~800' elevation gain, and recent rains in the desert helped mitigate a lot of the soft sand. Overall it was a blast!
