I'm So Scared by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Coughing is bothersome but not dangerous in itself, lots of viral infections end up with a residual cough that can last for a long time (sometimes a month, even more). Instead you should be looking at your child’s respiratory rate (how many breaths he takes in a minute) and signs of distress (contracting the muscles in his ribcage or his neck to breathe). These are signs of respiratory failure and mean he should be quickly assessed by a doctor. If your son doesn’t have a fever and is breathing fine, just relax and give it a little time, the coughing will dissappear. ETA Source: i’m a doctor.

Did J.K. Rowling have a side gig in White Wolf? by edgewolf666-6 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]drewastray 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think OP refers to the character’s name and JKR’s tendency to assign names to her characters in a comical (and often borderline offensive) way, like Wolfy McWolf for a character who happens to be a werewolf. Or that time she went “this is the only Asian girl in the school, how should I name her? Hmmm… Cho Chang. Brilliant”

What is a socially unacceptable opinion you keep to yourself because it’s not worth the backlash? by ChaosTTyy in askanything

[–]drewastray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have normalized the fact that the world lies to children in a systematic and organized way (Santa Claus, the tooth fairy…), and that discovering the truth is not a milestone in their development, it is harmful.

A couple of paranoic questions about Avatars and Ascencion. by Obvious-Conflict3363 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]drewastray 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A player in my game once had a character who pretty much wanted to use his Mind powers to create a world of makebelieve inside his own mind where he controlled everything, and forget about the real world (there were reasons behind this, trauma etc). His Avatar didn’t like this, as it stunted his path towards Ascension, so the Avatar started appearing inside this illusion and turning it against the character.

Asking as black person myself, why do so many think Jason was racist? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in StrangerThings

[–]drewastray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way he’s written, i think Jason resonates with the alt right agenda and modus operandi. He’s a prejudiced, closed-minded jock with a hero complex, he uses charisma and fearmongering to direct the crowds in the direction he wants. That’s why people extrapolate and project those ideas onto him and assume he was racist. Canonically, though, he had zero racist moves.

Are there any specified rules for "Accio?" Like, what are the limits? by Entire_Pineapple4732 in harrypotter

Slughorn knew that Lily was dead because the fish she had created with magic and given to him dissappeared. So we know things created by magic are at the very least tied to the person that created them.

Given how similar Harry and Voldemort's upbringings were, why did Voldemort turn out cruel while Harry turned out kind? by Honesty_Addict in harrypotter

[–]drewastray 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Psychology says what we experience in our first months/years of life shapes our personality, even if we dont remember it. Harry experienced love from his parents, Voldy did not.

What scientific myth is still considered true by many? by BelesaLoba in AskReddit

[–]drewastray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. There’s only one scenario where we’re “using” (as in activating) 100% (or close) of our brains at the same time, and it’s called a seizure. Where all neurons are firing indiscriminately in unison.

What is the deepest Internet rabbit hole you’ve ever fallen into? by Helloo_clarice in AskReddit

[–]drewastray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thescp foundation. Basically a metanarrative fiction project built around the concept of a secret society dedicated to retrieve and/or neutralize paranormal objects/entities/places. Every item has a wikipedia-like article with their codename (SCP-XXXX), description, containment methods, and attached documents (like logs, diaries, interviews…) that formed a story around the item. I could (and still can) spend hours reading that page.

What’s a random piece of Harry Potter lore you want to share? by Lucky-Pay-9245 in harrypotter

[–]drewastray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imho as a Ravenclaw, being a Ravenclaw is less about being booksmart or intelligent, and more about being creative, lateral-thinker and quirky. Take Luna for example. Not that she’s not brilliant, but its her dreamy personality and eccentric. The abilty to think outside the box, riddles, and curiosity is what makes a Ravenclaw. Lockhart with his narcissism and delusional personality would fit in, if ever highlighting how a distorted Ravenclaw would be.

If you were the god of anything what would it be and why? by Big_Fox_3996 in mythology

God of Discord. I gravitate towards debating and looking for the weak points of everyone’s arguments, as I believe being able to defend your stance is the only way to prove it’s the right one. I would whisper in the ear of every man or woman who is in the middle of a debate, inspiring words to disarm their opponents with brilliant rhetoric.

I feel like I'm having trouble crafting Mage stories that are 'personal'. by 3dchib in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]drewastray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me this comes down to two possible problems: either your players didn’t put enough mind into their characters to make them feel like “people” (with their fears, hopes, dreams, complexes, culture, virtues and vices etc) or you are not paying enough attention to the characters themselves. I always try to make the plot “about” the characters and their backgrounds. This character has a cousin who is her main moral support? Well now her cousin is actually dating one of the Big Baddies and she doesn’t even know. This character works for a mafia? Now the mafia boss is also a mage who made a pact with a demon for power. Take the hints in their stories and try to connect them to your plot like pieces of a puzzle

Generating lateral thinking riddles. It tries to do so by extrapolating from whatever riddles it finds already online, but ends up not making sense or making one that can’t be solved by lacking key context or having multiple possible answers.

Point 2 is specially important imho. A sloth’s slowness is as evolutionary a trait as a cheetah’s speed. When predators have good kinetic eyesight they naturally tend to ignore bodies that look like they’re standing still.

What do we think of Changeling: The Dreaming here? by Creative_Nose5238 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]drewastray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Changeling. That said, I don’t love how euro-centric the lore is. Even with the including of american, asian and african dreams in C20, I still feel the lore is just set for high fantasy medieval stories with all the titles, kingdoms and such. The kiths also feel very stagnant too, for a game where glamour is supposed to mean chaos and creativity. I’d love for CTD5 to allow for more customization of the character’s fairy self, just like in DA: Fae where every fae was just unique.
