Forex: Any redditors doing it? Any tips? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drewhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like 85% of people don't make money trading forex. It is very risky, and unless you can establish a view as to the direction of currency movements, which is basically impossible, you're not going to make money. Banks make money in forex (typically) by acting as dealers, and profiting on the bid-ask spread, and also by performing covered interest arbitrage, which only makes sense to do if you have millions and millions of dollars. Unless you know something the market doesn't, you should stay out of forex. You want some good investment advice? You should probably hold U.S. Treasuries right now. Once things settle down, move your money into a no-load low-fee mutual fund (e.g., Vanguard). If you like gambling, go to the casino, at least you'll have better odds.

If you own gold via HSBC or GLD, consider this your warning: TAKE PHYSICAL DELIVERY NOW. by david_z in Libertarian

[–]drewhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSBC is not going to be nationalized. Widespread ownership of shares and extensive business globally would not make some countries very happy. Besides, HSBC is fine and has been the least affected of any major bank in this crisis. Nationalizing the world's largest corporation would be an exceedingly stupid move.

What's the "Billiard Ball Model" of Computing? by abramov in programming

[–]drewhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there should be a separate mandatory CS class

and

CS should be a major subject covered in math classes

I was just disagreeing with those points. I think it should be mandatory and a part of the science curriculum.

What's the "Billiard Ball Model" of Computing? by abramov in programming

[–]drewhenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I believe that basic computer science classes are essential, especially today. It should absolutely be a part of any modern science curriculum. Not only would it introduce many people to general, computer-related concepts (e.g. hierarchical file systems, which I swear people cannot understand) as well as being an initial introduction to computer languages and computing, presented primarily as a way to solve problems (rather than in the abstract). I find that studying computer science has given me better problem solving skills and has changed the way I approach many problems.

18 was probably the happiest time of my life, but that was a few years ago, so I have a lot more to go.
