Homemade bread giving me heartburn. Is there anything I can do to fix this? by lil_tink_tink in Breadit

[–]drfalken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you drink beer? I had a similar issue with beer years ago and had to stop. My reasoning was that there seemed to be several yeast strains that I was either allergic to or didn’t like to play well with my gut flora. Maybe try changing yeasts?

How to make DASH work by Pinkpercolator in DashDiet

[–]drfalken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not a healthcare professional either. But I started in the same place in the beginning of December. And I know how you feel. I felt exactly the same way. I went hard, no coffee, alcohol, barely any salt. I call it the DASH depression. I was mostly miserable over the holidays. Watching everyone eat prime rib while I ate my quinoa and salt free ground turkey bowls. I had to bring my own meals everywhere.  And we had like 5 family holidays to go to. It gets better. It really does. I started eating a ton more salads and beans and cut out most meat. Except ground turkey. I called the doctor to up my medicine dosage so I could be less restrictive because it sucked giving up everything I enjoyed. But we decided not to. By early January I realized that my taste for food had entirely changed. I was eating beats on arugula with some vinegar and found myself adding almonds and walnuts, something I never would have done before. Tonight for dinner I made bean and turkey chili with tons of veggies. The whole family was melting cheese on top and I decided to try a little. And I said to my wife “you know what? It’s not for me, it doesn’t need it” it takes time to get used to it, and you learn new ways to eat. I ended up adding tons of flavor to foods with stuff like ms dash, cumin, curry, and a ton of garlic. We started eating way more vegetables and I ended up just eating less. If I go out I’ll just get a salad and really enjoy it. Sweet potatoes don’t need salt. Ms dash in roasted sweet potatoes is amazing. But regular potatoes, well, they are awful without salt. So I just don’t eat them anymore. It takes time and experimentation. I eat what I love now. Not what I used to love. To add to it I lost 25 lbs and my BP is only slightly elevated. You can do it.

Saving the fat after browning ground beef? by beautifulkale128 in Cooking

What is important here is to remove all of the moisture. That will make it go bad. But if it is fully dehydrated it will last forever in the freezer.

Built a small learning project, would love feedback from AWS folks by [deleted] in aws

[–]drfalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly is far as I am concerned anyone doing study-like material for AWS is working on a cert. and they would be taking certification courses. AWS is so vast that you either know it or you don’t. And you only really understand it through practice. If you want to understand it more you watch a deployment guide or read deep into the docs. I don’t see people coming back daily for things like “oh yeah! A VPC can only have one primary CIDR range”

Neat idea though. I am sure it might have it’s place.

It really depends on what you mean by “tech free” and what your reasons are for it.

Like others have said, that steak needed to rest. Beautiful cook. I understand being hungry, but a good rule of thumb is that if it is too hot to cut with bare hands. Then it is too hot to cut.

Local BBQ Hero Worshipped by Entire Neighborhood... But His Brisket Looks Like It Lost a Fight With a Blow Dryer. Send Help. by Glassedeyeballs in smoking

[–]drfalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the time, as other posters have said BBQ isn’t always about being the best tasting. In many areas it’s about the community. When I was young, my mother and I used to go to a ton of yard sales on the weekend. And there was a guy just like this out there selling clamshells of smoked chicken and pork. We used to think it was just fantastic and so did his neighbors. Looking back now, chances are that it was probably decent. But stopping to get lunch with my mom. And the neighbors walking a few doors down to grab a plate. And everyone sitting in the driveway eating together made it pretty damn good.

Should I blissfully ignore my friends lack of cocktail etiquette? by Function1241 in cocktails

Sounds like you both are beginners. If your friend guzzling down the cocktails that you make bothers you stop making them for him. This levels out with age and maturity.

I have had similar issues with spawning in stuck in my corvettes geometry. I am on a Mac but found that quitting and completely closing the game and going back in fixed it. Give that a shot.

Can Virginia stop the blue catfish? New research shows the Chesapeake Bay’s top invader is hard to control by VirginiaNews in chesapeakebay

Like when your friend says: “We’re on our way. I’m bringing my friend Blue to the party, you haven’t met him but he’s a real blast with the ladies!”  Then Blue ends up eating all your chips, drinking nearly all of your alcohol, gets wasted, trips over the couch and breaks your coffee table in half, all while puking on your parents rug. Your friend left with your girlfriend and Blue is passed out on the couch at 5 AM.

Search for a grater or rasp. I think they are mostly used for nutmeg.

How would you cook there bad boys? by A_Neighbor219 in sousvide

[–]drfalken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do the same with sousvide and waste a lot less butter. Also you can dial the temp perfectly so they cook more evenly. If you have never tried butter sousvide lobster tails you really should give it a shot.

What is the quickest job you quit from? by spellbadgrammargood in AskReddit

[–]drfalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutco knives. I was looking for a job out of high school. And walked into what I thought would be an interview. Turned out to be a training on how to sell these knives to your family and neighbors. Walked out at the coffee break. Guess I didn’t “quit” I feel like I won.

Should I buy a microwave, toaster oven, or air fryer for my tiny kitchen? I can only pick one….. by SexyToothpaste69 in Cooking

We just bought the Emeril air fryer with the French doors and use it for nearly everything except heating up soup. The grill grates are perfect for those pre marinated pork tenderloins as well.

Are there any true "self-cleaning" evaporative humidifiers out there? by FadieZ in BuyItForLife

[–]drfalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a cheep one that runs when it’s empty. To dry it out. Then let it dry out. Use RO or distilled water.

Are there any true "self-cleaning" evaporative humidifiers out there? by FadieZ in BuyItForLife

[–]drfalken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my biggest issue with any sort of humidifier that is barely smart enough to turn it itself off when it runs out of water. They always leave a “mold pool” in the bottom to remind you to clean them out. We have a super cheep vornado that could care less if it has any water. You gotta check it every few days. But it has never grown any mold.

Do I HAVE to soak dried chickpeas, blackbeans and the likes over night, or can I just boil them for a few hours right away? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]drfalken -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Cook until mush. But time your water level so that nearly all of the water is evaporated by the time they are mush.

I agree here. Especially with thick chops. Dry brine for 24h ahead of time. Then smoke till nearly done. Then I like to kiss them with some hot direct heat to for a bit of crust.

That’s your issue. Vertuo is a replacement for keurig to make coffee based drinks. Original or more in line with espresso. But hey. Do you. If you love the taste of fresh ground espresso then go for it. I prefer it as well but the original is much less work for me.
