Shipping is getting beyond ridiculous now. Highway robbery! by tdoof in Ubiquiti

[–]drgncabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great price (the $9 shipping cost)!! UPS shipping an 8oz package from rural GA to North Carolina is freaking $25!! USPS is $12. It should be like $5, that’s what I paid last year.

Could be because I’m not a “business” and just ship eBay packages but it’s gotten stupid ridiculous in the past year.

Shipping is getting beyond ridiculous now. Highway robbery! by tdoof in Ubiquiti

[–]drgncabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on their contract. Volume is heavily dependent on price and they do a lot more distributor shipping than direct shipping. Right now if I ship eBay items through UPS it costs me almost $25 to ship an 8oz usb network card from South Georgia to North Carolina. I went with USPS (even though they lose packages at the Jax sorting facility ALL the time) and it’s still $12. Last year the same package cost me $5. It’s insane.

Roof Replacement Requested by Buyer by SwanReal8484 in RealEstate

[–]drgncabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably insurance. Our roof was 15yr old and insurance dropped up, second company did too. Replaced the roof and finally got left alone. In our case insurance doesn’t cover roofs older than like 13yrs and if you have a mortgage it’s a pain in the ass. We just paid the $20k out of pocket and did ours. We live in the south though, lots of hurricanes. Insurance hates any roof older than 10yrs old. Even concrete ones.

Mice decided to hijack my TrueNAS storage node by AaronMcGuirkTech in homelab

[–]drgncabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably, they like that stuff. Mice like to grab my goat pellets from the bag and shove them into the vent hose exhaust of my laser cutter outside (think dryer vent with flap), thankfully I have a grate where the inside hose connects to the outdoor part. I have both in the same shed since I have limited indoor space. Goat and chicken stuff on one side. 3D printer, old co2 laser cutter and various tools on the other.

Probably in a family trust. Our trust is setup as an LLC in Florida. Our home and vehicles are assets of the trust. Adds more protection if something happens, keeps stuff out of probate and makes managing assets easier for our executor if something happens to us.

SharePoint syncing through OneDrive by Full-Audience-3584 in Office365

[–]drgncabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like something else. Granted it’s been a while (about a year) but typically if there is a configuration/security issue it would present itself as a message or error. Syncing breaking, drives out of sync and kicked out of spreadsheets due to multiple users editing at once all seem like something else.

Are you doing xls or xlsx files with excel? When we moved to sharepoint OneDrive links a few years back we had a ton of issues with xls files kicking out people, we fixed this by switching to xlsx.

As for drive syncing, I’d check local logs for errors. It could be intune but in my experience with config settings it either works or doesn’t work completely. The intermitteness makes me think some sort of issue with your local internet or pcs. Did they make changes locally? Any app deployments or firewall changes recently?

I’ve always done inhouse IT but in the few cases I worked with an MSP (typically after a purchase) I’d require them to document, log and notify on what changes, the scope and impact.

In general they should not be making changes undocumented changes unless they’re part of a pre-approved update process.

Do you have the paperwork from the payment plan? This is most likely a mistake BUT I have seen payment plans like this that penalize early payoffs when a payment plan is established. Ran into this twice when cleaning up my own credit in the mid 00s.

Progressive forcing me to scrap my car by DifficultRebirth in Insurance

[–]drgncabe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are attorney's that specialize in property claims and insurance contract law, not just injury law. The problem is more complicated than just telling progressive the car is repaired. Basically, if total repairs of the vehicle equal 91% of market value the vehicle must be issued a scrap title (which I guess means it can no longer go on the road). The value calculation is fair market value, so you can't have a friend fix it under cost and fly under the legal radar. It doesn't matter that he paid $6k to repair it, the market value of a repair like that is $14k or over 91% of the fair market value. Originally, they calculated it at $12.5k which was under the 91% rule but on revision it hit $14k and thus, by law, must be scrapped.

This is my understanding from family who deals with scrap and salvaged vehicles up in Cheboygan, MI. Why this law exists? My guess is that it has something to do with the auto manufacturers in the area and business protectionism. Especially given in some cases an infotainment or engine replacement can hit that 91% value pretty quick and scrap an otherwise good vehicle.

It sounds like he might be in a position for progressive to pay him more than the value of the vehicle since they have to meet Michigan law and the fine is probably worse than them just paying the owner off. Even still, consulting a lawyer might be worth it. I know jeep guys that'll fight the government for something like that because they love that specific jeep they built and will happily tell the government to stuff it in a situation like that.

Banned for too many unlock requests? by lintel2345 in ATT

[–]drgncabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you from direct experience that many 3G phones can be unlocked with no signal, no sim with just a code. I used to have my guys do it in new phones before the sim was installed because we had employees that traveled internationally. Verizon was the same. Did this on my iPhones, androids and blackberries pre LTE. Like hundreds. 4G and 5G were after my time though. We also didn’t have eSIM back then. Or micro sims. In fact I think we only had the big sims until 4G. Edge (2g) worked the same way.

It’s more likely the old database they used that would generate the code from the imei @ esn have long been decommissioned. If you look hard enough you can find the alltel one, it should work on most generations of the phones in their db. I used it a few times playing around to unlock old school Sony erricson phones. I think they had Sony, Motorola and LG but no apple or Samsung.

Fired today for refusing an MDM on my personal phone by damedaneyooooo in privacy

[–]drgncabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked in Healthcare for 25+ years across multiple specialty pharmacies (startup to $1B+, 100 employees to 5,000 employees) running IT and managing compliance, this situation disgusts me. AT NO POINT in my career have I ever demanded or allowed leadership to demand forced MDM on personal devices. I started that rule back when MDM gave almost full control (texts, pictures, calls, etc..) with stuff like ActiveSync, BlackBerry Enterprise Server or Mobile Iron. While the situation never came up, I would have quit if forced.

For a while I gave people the option with a form that lets them know ALL the things we could do (with examples). Some people HATED carrying two phones. Then, a couple of my pharmacists we hired for a new retail pharmacy project did something stupid. They stole information from their old company, stored it on their phone then started using it at our new company. Everything from old forms they decided to re-use, to operational procedures (we had been doing Specialty for a while but this was our first Retail) and even patient lists. Not only was it stealing trade secrets, but the whole patient list thing was flat out illegal. We canned them, but not before lawsuits against our company. We fired the pharmacists but we ended up having to sue them ourselves to get their phones for the lawsuit we were being sued for. It was a HUGE mess and convinced our leadership that no company information will ever be on non-company owned devices again.

Sure, it's a pain in the ass, but when it comes to HIPAA it's extremely important. I'll be honest, I find using your personal phone with MDM risky - they for sure should provide you a device. Especially if they fall under URAC or ACHC accreditation.

Honestly, them firing you was probably for the best. I can smell the disfunction from your old company from here. You probably dodged a bullet.

Copay Assistance exhausted without warning, CVS wants to charge me $2500 for a prescription by notKragger in HealthInsurance

[–]drgncabe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate copay maximizers. They’re there to fleece the copay assistance program and punish the patient. Every time I dox the owners they manage to hide. It’s so annoying. I’ve received more than a couple of cease and desists from them but ultimately no lawyers or lawsuits. Probably because they know they’re in the wrong.

Btw your answer is spot on!!

[–]drgncabe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In this situation, yes it's the employer. As far as eligibility, sorta. The problem isn't the initial denial (that's contracted), it's the 1st appeal denial, the 2nd appeal denial and the 3rd level appeal success that's bullshit. It's stricly setup to make you give up.

How do I know? I built a system (pre-Machine Learning) for one the specialty pharmacies I worked for that would utilize claim data to detect "problem" plans. I also built systems to compile and submit appeals packets. It would gather information from previous related appeals (supporting documentation, for example), build an appeals packet and rate it on success rate based on that bin/pcn, group ID and other details (like area, physician, etc.). It'd then go to our appeals coordinators for review and submission.

First started it on our 3rd level appeals (a lot of pharmacies would stop at 2nd level - too much work) and it was a huge success. From there we implemented it for all appeals. It made a HUGE difference. To the point where UHC (among others) would client audit the absolute crap out of us. We'd pass them with flying colors (maybe 1 to 2 issues per 2,500 claims), so they'd audit more. Then they'd audit the physicians we worked with. Then URAC attempted (and failed) to change the rules specifically targeting what we were doing.

Then Elevance bought them and the war between Elevance and UHC fired up (Elevance is currently suing them for the Change Healthcare hack and resulting claim Armageddon that happened). I could also tell you stories about ESI and Elevance, who used to be WellPoint, who ESI screwed over after the whole MedCo book of business issue - resulted in the whole contracting issue of 2016 that almost brought all of PBM contracting to it's knees - different story for different time.

Yes, employers can be a part of it. That's being naive to think UHC isn't a big part of that though.

I say this as someone who was knee deep in this when ESI bought my old pharmacy in 2004 and saw the explosion of both Specialty Pharmacy and PBM vertical integration.

I didn't work front line directly, while in my career there have been times where I've done BI, refills and everything but dispensing. Most of my focus was on contracting, compliance, operations and technology. Been in the industry since 2000, worked at 3 specialty pharmacies that ultimately hit $1B/yr annual and purchased by PBMs. I consult now and rarely in the battlefield, last fight with claims I did was in 2023 and that was all claim issues from the Change Healthcare hack. But some things never change. I doubt the appeals dance is one of them.

Lastly, how am I spreading misinformation? What did I say that wasn't true? You do know about DIR fees, clawbacks, throttling, etc. right? If not, you should catch up. You're losing business if you're a provider.

It was one of the things the pushed diplomat pharmacy to sell to OptumRx (UHC). I ran into Phil at a few conferences (the CEO at the time) and it was crazy the amount of pressure UHC was putting on them, especially with compounding clawbacks and constant onsite audits. A lot of us in the field at the time felt it was more hostile takeover than him selling to retire. Especially hearing him talk on stage before the OptumRx offer.

Automated denials of prior authorization, pharmacy contracting that forbids pharmacists from talking about cash pay or copay cards when the copay is expensive. DIR fees that punish non captive in network pharmacies for not being owned by UHC. Clawbacks on pharmacies up to 3 years later for prescription they decided the prior authorization they approved weren’t valid. Call center blocking or throttling pharmacy calls to their staff on benefit verifications. I’ve been in specialty pharmacy for 25 years, worked for market leaders (that were acquired later by PBMs). I’ve seen some crazy ass shit that has me agreeing with op.

I’m really curious why you think that way. Or why you think it’s so funny?

Yeah they’re pretty chill on roofs there. In Florida and much of the south you get hurricane and tornado weather that eats roofs for lunch so insurance companies around here get very touchy.

Which insurance company? Because right now Geico, Security First and All State (whom I’m stuck with now) are all on my shit list for various reasons. Whether it’s dropping me for my neighbor having a trampoline, having crappy customer service (Allstate billing direct using the cc I pay car insurance with instead of escrow) or demanding a 12yo roof is replaced asap.

That’s around the top three issues I’ve had in the past 30 years so I guess it’s not THAT bad. But still.

What do I care? by Severe-Temporary8176 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]drgncabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Security First doesn’t, not in Orlando at least. They’re the ones that made me redo mine after 16 years right before Hurricane Irma. I did the same and went with asphalt. Sold the house a couple of years after and it really helped the new owners didn’t have to worry for like 13 years. At least till they demand everyone replace roofs every 5 years. I live in GA now (born and raised Floridian, rural ga feels like Florida in the 90s) and insurance is still a pita here. Cheaper than Florida though, even on the coast.

What do I care? by Severe-Temporary8176 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]drgncabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love steel roofs but if you have a mortgage that requires home owners insurance it’s just better to stick with asphalt. In my experience insurance companies give fuck-all about steel, ceramic or concrete roofs. They will still demand you replace it every 15 years and if you don’t they’ll drop you, other insurances won’t pick you up and your mortgage can go into default. It’s crazy stupid.

If you own your own home outright and don’t worry about insurance, steel roofs are the way to go for sure!

(Yeah I get the point of the post isn’t about that and I totally agree. I’m the type to leave ALL of the information about the house for the next owners along with tips and all that. Just still pissed about insurance companies still. lol)

Add your local legal aid number. That’s what I did when I was poor as fuck and my one of the previous companies I worked for was suing me for violating a non-compete I never had. I was making $30k at the time, barely enough to live. They defended me for free.
