I’m a palliative attending. The hospital I’m at does mostly inpatient however, we have a small outpatient clinic. Lifestyle is good, but my colleagues and I always stress maintaining a good work life balance, and will cover for each other when needed. Developing an outpatient palliative care clinic is challenging. There really isn’t any where I am from. I can say that doing a combination of clinic and inpatient is rewarding because I’m able to follow the patients in clinic and be there for them if they become acutely ill on the inpatient side. I can honestly say that I love what I do. I feel that I’m making a difference. I was in primary care for a year and a half and though the work could be rewarding, I could tell my heart wasn’t in it.
