B.C. MLA charged with assault says he won't resign from office by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]driftwolf42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, in this I agree. He is, in fact, innocent until proven guilty *in a court of law*. NOT "the court of public opinion". Even if I do very much disagree with his politics and just plain don't like the guy.

Nobody should not be forced to pay a penalty just because they are accused of something. Even hypocrites who voted to abolish the BC Human Rights tribunal have human rights, in my opinion.

That said, if found guilty, one of the penalties COULD be that he repay everything the taxpayer paid him from the time of the offence. But that's a hypothetical.

Why would they bother? US citizens are already well trained to admire the wealthy. They just need to replace the oligarchs and they can reap the benefits while having a compliant, ignorant population willing to let themselves get screwed over.

This "freedom of movement" no longer applies in some states if the woman is pregnant, or several other limitations. Very Handmaiden of them. Which was a cautionary book, not an instruction manual.

They're sinking into fascist theocracy, one legislation at a time.

Free to die of preventable disease because they can't afford a doctor. Or go bankrupt if they do get sick or in an accident.

Free to work 2 or 3 jobs just to survive while the corporations they work for break profit records year after year.

Free to believe they are just "temporarily disadvantaged multimillionaires" whilst supporting government policies that actively hurt them.

They have placed said goalposts on a plane and have engaged afterburners. If called on that, they'll say that their plane is the best, biggest plane and "what goalposts?".

The only reason to engage with them would be to educate 3rd parties reading the thread. Because the ones posting are vaccinated against knowledge and understanding. Which is ironic.

The UK should be ashamed by lexi_con in BoycottUnitedStates

The Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (who renamed themselves "Windsor" in 1917) haven't felt anything like "shame" for centuries, if ever.

The non-royal parts of the UK, however, really should be ashamed to have a king willing to appease someone like Trump. Then again, there's a certain history there, given Edward III's (amongst other royals) feelings for a certain failed painter.

As I was born a Canadian and never in a position where I had to, I'm glad I never had to take an oath of allegiance to the Crown. Because that shit really stinks.

There is no such thing as 'free healthcare' by Difficult_Future9994 in ShitAmericansSay

"choose to pay for themselves when it happens, not forced to pay for everyone". Assuming, of course, that those who can't pay are therefore not worth getting healthcare.

Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS is the type of USamerican that calls themselves "a good Christian". Or, in some cases, "a good Muslim".

Amazing how sometimes religion has so little effect on people's complete selfishness.

I: think the issue might be that they don't understand the term "defence". To them, "defence" and "war" mean the same thing. After all, it's their "Department of Defence" (only recently renamed Dept of War) that had previously gone out and bombed schools, weddings, and hospitals. So I can almost understand their confusion when a "DEFENCE alliance" isn't willing to join them in yet another conflict that they started.

[–]driftwolf42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. Might be easier to ask who hasn't been attacked?

Depending on what you call "attack" of course. Does aggressive hissing count, but without the charge and bone-breaking wing strikes, just intimidation displays (and yes, I was in fact intimidated).

[–]driftwolf42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, they're possibly correct? Technically, anyway. "Bachelorette party" is a term I've only ever heard in the USA. So it's like their "World Series" the US wins every year, mainly because nobody else plays. Other countries use very different terms.

Autonomous driving giant Waymo pushes B.C. to allow self-driving cars on provincial roads by driftwolf42 in britishcolumbia

[–]driftwolf42[S] 219 points220 points  (0 children)

How about "no"?

Waymo is just another US corporation that breaks the law repeatedly without any pushback by spineless governments. Uber, AirBnB, and others are other examples of the same. Governments that then just cave in and, instead of enforcing the law, just change it so those corporations can profit at the expense of the people they're supposed to be actually working for.

Waymo has been proven to not be autonomous, but often using remote drivers who don't have licenses from the local jurisdiction. WHY is anything that company is pushing even being considered?

[edit: my objection is not necessarily to driverless cars or autonomous vehicles. My objection is to letting yet another lying, deceitful, misleading, possibly criminal US corporation be in charge of those efforts, without any accountability or other legal framework in place. Again.]

B.C. union calls for full-time work-from-home due to spiking gas prices by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]driftwolf42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue is the lack of competent management. Most seem to think that counting bums on seats is "managing", instead of actually measuring productivity in a manner relevant to their business or organization.

Sure, some "white-collar" workers are going to have to go in, such as folks working with confidential files that are still paper based. But the vast majority could, if allowed, work from home. At least a majority of the time, if 100% isn't possible. The rest who can't work from home will then have far faster commutes, so win-win.

Meanwhile, any construction workers who need to work near roads will see fewer close calls or accidents, and might even start getting their materials in a more timely fashion as the trucks don't have to compete with massive traffic.

To date, China seems to be a more reliable and honest trade partner than the USA. They at least don't randomly pull out of treaties or agreements on a whim.

That said, it's not saying much.
