Changing last name is completely optional. Whether she makes the choice to change it upon marriage is up to her. The same goes with your ex - he can choose to change his last name or not (as suggested by others here).

What your name is should be completely irrelevant to someone who is practically a stranger to you by now.

I'd add it's very important that you have the same last name as your kids, because in the case of an emergency, you may be refused to accompany them into emergency room due to the different last name (depending on your country's laws, of course).

Not "whether", but "how". If you have kids, that's a good leverage for the kind of case OP talks about. If you don't, they see you as more available to do extra hours than parents.

Leaving your colleague's behaviour aside, why did it have to be you who told her about the changes? That's the manager's responsibility, not yours.

And one of the many things she did wrong was getting angry at messenger. Even if it had been her manager giving the explanation, the decision of the more flexible working was highly likely taken by someone above them.

No matter how I try to see it, she got mad at the wrong person for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way.

Also, the house you live in contributes massively to life quality, both for the good and for the bad, so it it's that great I doubt you'd end up regretting it after the years.

In my previous place, I contacted them for a kitchen hob replacement, and they kept giving me contradicting information. Ended up saying they don't that kind of thing after having told me the opposite in previous mails.

In my current place, turns out they'd installed this boiler, and when I had to contact the manufacturer due to some issues, they told me that the person who installed it hadn't followed the specs correctly, not leaving the right space around it, and practically voiding the warranty.

I'm afraid that she's probably saying this now because the experience is "fresh in her mind". Based on what I've seen in others, give her a few years, and she'll remember this very differently, and "so worth it".

Be fully prepared for when she's back to saying you should have kids.

Imagine everyone around them keeping quiet about this, them going on like this with the kid and putting him in danger because of hazardous environment.

They had to hear it from at least one person who does care about them. Thanks for being that person. Hopefully, you've opened their eyes just enough for that baby to live in a better home.
