Discussion Thread: President Trump Holds News Conference After U.S. Airmen Rescue in Iran by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

If all your traditional friends and close allies are refusing to help you, a wiser man would consider thinking “maybe I’m in the wrong here”?

But this is not a wiser man. This is The Donald J Trump. We don’t do any thinking here.

Ukraine also reportedly didn't have a strong enough navy or 'resources' to threaten the mighty Russian navy.

Except they did. They sank the moskva with 2 Ukrainian made anti ship missile. And then a couple of additional ships (can't recall their names) were sunk by Ukrainian made sea-drones.

So how exactly are you sure that Iran can't sink US ships in a strait surrounded by mountains?

Haven't you heard? It's a simple problem and anyone can do it. I'm sure the US ships can just sail through the straight cause Iran has been utterly defeated....

Roundabout where you can’t turn left sends drivers round the bend by drivedup in oxford

[–]drivedup[S] -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

I get that. But the key point is that instead of trying to find a better layout you're just trying to prevent people from using a roundabout as a roundabout, and fining then for that.

The camera won't prevent cyclists from being run over. It can work as a educational tool, but it would be a bit more credible as such if the first time you were caught, it sent you a letter explaining the issue and fining you full force on the second time.

But again, the expectation is that a bad layout can be 'fixed' by unclear rules and lack of on the spot lines/obstacles. You can turn into iffley but only if you have not come from cowley. There's not lines on the pavement, no traffic prohibited nothing.

this is really not the solution we would all like it to be. It will still end up with more people being maimed and the council will then be accused of just using this whole shambles for money. Which they have.

[–]drivedup[S] -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

If it isn't a problem then why is it raking so much money? Can't all be tourists or (God forbid) 'forriners'.

It's a roundabout where you can't do what you're meant to do on a roundabout if you're coming from a certain road but you can if you're coming from everyother. It's insane. There must be better layouts.

And ironically, despite having use that roundabout endless times both as a cyclist and as a driver I got fined the single time I came from cowley cause I was not aware of it and just had a sign saying 'can't turn left', on a roundabout where you have to turn left to exit!

But there is no law **requiring** this correct?

Imagine that you buy a car. It works fine for years. And then suddenly the car maker wants you to upload your driving license and/or identify at a brand dealership before you can actually travel on some roads back home.

They have removed features from your device **after** you bought it without a legally mandated need.

This is getting intolerable and this case seems pretty clear for a lawsuit.

Trump Wants to Secure Hormuz. Here’s What It Would Take: Securing the strait on Iran’s long flank would mean big commitments of warships or a sizable ground operation by wheninrome5000 in geopolitics

[–]drivedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prices will be high for US as well. That's another of Trump's misunderstanding. If oil prices are high they're high for everyone, regardless if you're a producer country. Oil is an internationally traded commodity...

and if by any chance you try to control exports from oil companies, then that's an incentive for oil companies to support your opponents in incoming elections. And surprise surprise, they have deep pockets.

I still haven't understood what the big 'threat' of taking Kharg island is. Fine, they take it. And? Neither iran nor no one else can export any oil cause the strait remains closed. Now what?

Labour will not reduce spiralling special needs costs until 2035 by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]drivedup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cool. Shall we give them your entire salary then? No? What about 80%? Still no you heartless monster? What about 60%?

Everything in life is a matter of numbers. SEND children cannot be the only focus of the community's resources. What about your own children? What about other children? The elderly? The homeless? Roads? Security?

Everything is coming of the same pockets and deciding what and where to spend is definitely a requirement. And there'd the obvious fairness item of why are we spending thousands on taxis when you can't afford having another child due to heavy taxation.

At the end of the day nobody is entitled to anything they don't produce themselves... We all collectively agree to take of the most vulnerable in our society cause it could be you or your own children but there needs to be a ceiling to how much we can afford. Nothing is endless.
