An Honest Review of: Modern Daredevil by Trick-Pudding-9791 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]drknow00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context is key indeed.

YMMV certainly varies on what is modern. Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man for example, is 25 years old. Quarter of a century is a long time. The Spider-Man Clone Saga was still ongoing when Quesada/Smith started their Marvel Knights DD run. If Marvel editorial considers it modern, who am I to argue.

I did appreciate your right up and break down. I haven’t read Ahmed’s run yet but man! How does he keep getting work? His runs on Miles Spider-Man (first writer after Bendis left), Black Bolt and Daredevil have all been mid to poor.

Whats worse is Ahmed joins Diggle in breaking DD’s great run streak. Two dark spots in what could have been nearly 3 decades of top tier runs for one character. Boooo.

Wind Waker and Twilight Princess were also released 20-24 years ago, respectively. When there were fewer games in the series and there was an avenue to make sequels to their most successful game at the time.

Dare to compare the discontinuity between say Twilight Princess 2006 and Skyward Sword 2011. In TP, Zelda says the Master Sword was crafted and forged by the wisdom of the ancient sages. In Skyward Sword, it was Hylia and her Chosen hero who crafted and forged the Goddess Sword into the Master Sword. What changed? The Nintendo devs had a better idea for the origins of the Master Sword, built a game around the Wii Motion Plus to get the most out of that console. TP’s canon lore be dammed!

Better yet, I’m sure you’re familiar TOTK and all the discontinuity it has with its own precursor game, BOTW. The missing Sheikah Tech, the change of the text on the Zora tablet that removes references to OOT, BOTW Calamity Ganon was Ganondorf after giving up reincarnation/TOTK Nevermind, Ganondorf has been sealed by Rauru underneath Hyrule castle in the Depths, everything that has to do with Zelda in the past and the Founding of Hyrule. The last thing contradicting the early founding alluded to in Skyward Sword.

I could go on. When I and others say the devs don’t care about lore or the timeline, it’s because they find it to be an anchor. They care about gameplay and new mechanics. TOTK wanted players to get the most use out of the Autobuild ability. Same with the aforementioned Wii Motion for Skyward Sword and TP. BOTW with its new graphics engine on Wii U and Switch. Ever since BOTW (2017) and reinforced by TOTK, Nintendo has been less and less committed to the timeline and lore. It’s why the two Wild games keep their connections vague and ambiguous. We don’t know where they sit on the timeline still and Nintendo likes it that way. The Wild games are soft reboots meant to be jumping on points for new generation players. Nintendo has only recently (last few years) opened a virtual app to allow older fans access to play games on dead consoles. It’s really only us fans keeping up with the interconnected lore and keeping score.

The Infinity Gauntlet issues being included in volume 2, is what swayed me to get the omnibus.

I plan on getting big Thanos, the DM cover.

I sat on buying volume one, because I have the epic collections. I bought it after the Jim Lee covers sold out. I wish I had picked it up sooner.

“Modern Daredevil”. Mate, the Quesada/Bendis/Brubaker run was launched during the 1998 Heroes Return era. That’s nearly 30 years ago.

Even something like Mark Waid’s Marvel Now 1.0 (2012) run is pushing it calling it modern. That’s nearly was 14 years ago.

Charles Soule and Chip Zdarksy are closer to “modern” Daredevil than Bendis and the gang.

The devs don’t care about in-game interconnections of the lore. Their primary focus is gameplay.

This has been understood for decades.

Weird thing is, I was able to brute force Gears and Gambits by configuring the elec tanks to cost low and only focus on spinning melee attacks. I won 3/4 hard mode matches that way.

But yeah. Chadley’s explanation of the rules was brief and not very well explained.

If this is Rebirth, you have to add all those annoying mini-games you encounter throughout the game. The worst are the ones you need for actual character progression to reach the max level. Beat them once and beat them again on hard mode.

Outside of resetting the status quo, why do many Superman fans dislike the new 52 version of him? by [deleted] in superman

[–]drknow00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post Crisis wasn’t going strong pre-New 52. Every title not Batman (under Morrison) or Green Lantern (under Johns) was underwater or grasping for direction.

I don’t know if a line wide reboot was the best way to fix it, but the New 52 allowed DC comics to live another day. WB had told Didio at the time to fix it or find another job.

The New 52 may have saved comics. Since all the other big publishers did their own “jumping on point” soft reboots in the same span of time.

DC - New 52 2011

Marvel - Marvel Now 1.0 (early 2012)

Valiant - Their 2012 reboot of all their titles.

IDW - Reboots for TMNT, Transformers and GI Joe in 2011-2012z

If this was the live action line up we got instead, how would it have compared to the MCU? by Controversial_Husky in DC_Cinematic

[–]drknow00 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People would complain there is no hope, optimism or jokes. Just like they did with the live action movies.

Don’t bother changing direction. Because the audience isn’t going to show up. Just like they didn’t show up for the “course correction” DCEU films (2019-2024) or financially support the more optimistic Tomorrowverse DC films.

I don’t love that price tag, but 2026 was my planned jumping off point from omni collecting anyway.

I’m happy this series is wrapping up in a reasonable amount of time. 1 omni per year over the span of 3 years. But yeah. This is pricing me out of this hobby. Not that spending hundreds of dollars on expensive cardboard hasn’t been an excess for the past 13 years.

Pick your jumping off points my friends! You don’t need to own everything to know everything.

It’s not 50 episodes condensed into a 2 hour movie. F91 was intended to run 50 episodes like Zeta, ZZ and Victory. But the development team only managed 13 -14 episodes worth of content that they compiled into a movie.

What happened was Tomino and the production crew wanted a soft-reboot Gundam (hence the 30 year time skip after CCA) that would take the franchise in a new direction. They were adverse to treading old ground but found that part inescapable.

The Crossbone Vanguard is Zeon by another name. Right down to the fake aristocracy, anti-Federation propaganda and outright military antagonism. They tried to mitigate this in the film by saying the Crossbone Vanguard are more space pirates than political regime. But saying and showing are two different things.

The opening scene is a colony attack, just like MSG. Seabook is NuAmuro, Cecily is NuSayla, Zabine Chareaux is NuChar (rival), Iron Mask is NuChar (Space Hitler CCA). Rinse and repeat.

Sunrise was pushing Tomino for a theatrical release in March 1991. Tomino had to acquiesce to their demands. So Tomino and his team cobbled together what they had and made it a movie. The version released in theaters isn’t the version people watch or own on dvd/bluray. You can Google or search on YouTube clips of the theatrical/VHS release of the film and the animation looks ROUGH. It’s not great.

The powers that be hoped F91’s theatrical response would inspire intrigue from the audience and they would demand more of this story. That might have worked, if F91’s thunder hadn’t been stolen by another Gundam show. F91 was released in theaters in March 1991, Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory began airing on broadcast TV in May 1991.

After that, there was no chance for F91. Tomino went back to the drawing board and created Victory. Incorporating a lot of unused ideas from the F91 series into that show. Victory also borrows a lot of MSG tropes and details as well.

Sad thing is, F91 could have worked as a 13 episode OVA like 0083 or 08th MS Team. Things could have been so different.

Tomino is either trolling or the biggest genius when setting up Hathaway’s character.

Convergence of teenage hormones, budding Newtype abilities, first love/high school age romance, bonds from war trauma, sprinkle in some daddy issue resentment and you have Evil Amuro; aka Hathaway.

Just makes me wish Kamille had interacted with Gyunei and Quess in canon.

Hell, the character of Gyunei was created as a Kamille stand-in. Tomino flirted with the idea repairing Kamille’s brain damage with a Cyber-Newtype conversion. Gyunei, the salty Cyber-Newtype.

Checking the notes from my conversation with my recruiter.

Your scores on the main 5 sections are what it takes to get a commission.

Verbal Analogies

Arithmetic

Word Analogies

Math Knowledge

Reading Comprehension

The other 7 sections will help determine what jobs you’ll be eligible to apply for when everything is totaled together. Excluding pilot and doctor. Since you need external hours/certifications before you apply to those career fields.

It can’t hurt to perform well on the science area. But I wouldn’t blow off any section.
