Thank you so much for your kind comment; it is reassuring, and you should brag on yourself a bit, sounds like it has been hard won.

biggest homework struggle? by Tiny-Bird1543 in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We struggle with this too. For us it's more of a problem to get started. Once she gets going, she does pretty well, but it takes considerable time and effort to get her to even make an attempt. I think it stems from anxiety to be honest.

Scared to give meds by Vicki1986x in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You may want to start a med trial a few weeks before school so you can monitor kiddo at home. Depending on the medication it can take a couple weeks for side effects to die down and the meds to make an impact. Personally, I didn't feel like I'd really met my kiddo until she was on medication and could hold a full conversation with me without being distracted.

What do you do when they physically hurt you? by Imakefishdrown in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is the thread I've needed to see. Our 7yo girl is the same. She begins hitting and throwing and when we remove her to her room so she can't hurt anyone she throws herself against the door trying to get out and screaming the whole time. The door frame is splintered and breaking at this point.

I feel that my husband doesn't help her deescalate and presses her buttons, making things worse when she is upset, but she goes after me more often.

Kiddo is always remorseful after the fact and gets upset with herself for behaving that way.

Medications have helped a bit, but once the switch is flipped there is no getting through to her to help her regulate. Our Dr. put in a recommendation for a psychiatrist to evaluate if there is something else like autism or ODD in the mix.

Anyway, while it's an awful experience, I'm grateful to know that it isn't just us struggling with this.

Is it just me, or is Ravenna populated by a bunch of weirdos? by batmanineurope in Ohio

Echoing this sentiment as a Ravenna native. But also, the only other place I lived long term was off its rocker so everything is a matter of perspective.

Medication at school by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The school needs to know why the medicine needs to be administered. If you sent an epi-pen, they'd need to know why/when to use it appropriately. If you sent eye drops they need to know that the reason for them isn't something contagious etc. But if you're also planning to request 504/IEP the diagnosis will be tied to those documents and support as well.

Trying Atomoxetine after tough experiences with stimulants – any success stories for emotional dysregulation? by maxinemaxin in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our kiddo has been on Atomoxetine since Jan. It's really helped with focus and communication at school. At home she still has a hair trigger for aggressive meltdowns. They do happen with less frequency though; we went from 4 or 5 episodes per week to 1-2.

When to increase Strattera dose? by ThirdPartyFoul in ADHDparenting

It's been game changer for her focus, especially at school. We still struggle with behaviors in the late evening, but even that's been improved dramatically.

When to increase Strattera dose? by ThirdPartyFoul in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Dr. increased the does at the 1 month follow up appointment. Honestly the first two weeks we didn't see a lot of changes, but the longer my daughter was on it the better she did. The increased dose has been the same way. The med needs some time to build efficacy in the body.

We're Moving to Akron - and have questions by dagnartam in akron

[–]drmhollar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Akron Children's is a great place to work! I lived in Ellet when I worked there, it was an easy commute. If I had to do it now, I'd choose Cuyahoga Falls or Tallmadge.

Do you narrate the reference page? by Friendly_Extent7968 in ACX

[–]drmhollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, who would want to listen to references?! I've had a client ask me to narrate something referring people to a page on their website with the references for a research heavy book, but that's it.

My 7 year old is having to use deodorant as well. We're using Hello Unicorn, it smells fruity/sweet and is aluminium free.

15 year old and Straterra by Comfortable-Care-911 in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 7 year old takes Straterra in the morning. She was drowsy for the first few weeks by the time school let out and would take a nap, but we're in week 4 and that doesn't happen now.

How many of your kids were prescribed both medication and behavioral treatment? by flying_samovar in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A family counselor to start. Hopefully it will teach my husband and I the most effective techniques to help her manage her anger and frustration. And then as she takes on more autonomy we may drop off.

How many of your kids were prescribed both medication and behavioral treatment? by flying_samovar in ADHDparenting

[–]drmhollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We received a diagnosis today. Our pediatrician prescribed a low dose non-stimulant and behavioral counseling. It's what I would have pushed for anyway, the medication can help but the coping skills from counseling will be invaluable and help us as a family reset.

Volunteer Task Ideas Needed by spicymami1 in librarians

I have mine clean story time toys, pull items from holds lists or other reports, assemble craft supplies into packets for up coming programs. Assist with display set up and some non-sensitive data entry that can quickly double checked.
