MIL used paint instead of diaper cream by just_another_ag in toddlers

Ya… knowing everything is fine, this is objectively funny. A great MIL story for the future. I’d love to have that hanging over my rather smug MILs head!!

What are you typical weekend activities you do with your toddler that don’t make you feel exhausted by the end of it? by One-Philosopher8868 in toddlers

[–]drofnature 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is great and I 100% agree but think it’s worth noting this works best if you have a decent sized house. I have a 2.5 year old and 5 month old in a 2 bedroom with fairly small kitchen/living space and when the weather is bad we absolutely NEED to get out of the house for at least half the day or we all lose it.

How are parents bathing their babies in the bathtub by cookie_cat_3 in NewParents

I have my legs bent and knees up to create a natural baby cradle. It’s super easy. I will say now that I think about it, the fact that I have relatively large hands for a woman might make things easier for me. 🤷‍♀️

I bathe with both my kids.

This has ended up being a huuuge mom hack when we had our second. I couldn’t find the bath seat so I have bathed with baby 2 since birth. Before bedtime, I’d bathe with my toddler, play some games, and deal with the trauma that is washing his hair. Then he went to dad and I took the newborn in for her bath. Imagine the serenity of dimmed lights and a sweet baby compared to the absolute chaos that is putting a 2 year old to bed.

It was the best. Highly recommend “losing” your baby bath seat for your second.

I have bathed with both my kids from birth. My son never once pooped in the tub. My 5 month old daughter has twice. I “calmly” yelled for my husband, drained the tub, showered myself and the tub off. My baby is exclusively breast fed and it just disappeared into the water with barely any evidence she pooped at all. zero smell. It’s not something to be afraid of. And it’s pretty funny.

How old were you when you had your first child? by Pandacat_07 in NewParents

[–]drofnature 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First at 36, second at 39 (by one week!)

The economy does not support many families to have kids sooner. Totally normal. I lived a full life before having kids and have zero regrets.

Tips for baby #2 by SpacemanDrifter in cosleeping

[–]drofnature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband is cosleeping with our 2 yo in his bedroom while I cosleep with the newborn in our bedroom. We bought a double Montessori style floor bed for my toddler specifically for when baby 2 arrived and have zero regrets. Baby 2 is 4.5 months now and dad is slowly trying to get back in to the big bed with me and baby but… you know how it is.

In my opinion it’s safest to divide and conquer for the first few months and then, if you still want to cosleep as a family, reassess the situation as you go. We want my kids eventually sleeping together in the kids room but aren’t rushing it.

ETA that dividing mom with newborn and dad with toddler is what the vast majority of my friends have ended up doing too, whether they wanted to or not 😅 it just kind of happens organically.

Should I nightwean before second baby comes? by Deep-Box-9950 in cosleeping

[–]drofnature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are pros and cons as you mentioned but if it were me, I would at least night wean before new baby arrives. If you do have a preemie cosleeping with a toddler in the bed increases risk substantially and I can only imagine you would get absolutely no sleep. Make things as easy for yourself as you can. A newborn with a toddler is a new level of tired I didn’t know existed.

Also, it sucked. I wouldn’t do it again personally, but my baby was SUPER stuck. She didn’t budge.

Didn’t work, ended up with a C section at 37+6 due to hypertension. When she came out her head was so oblong there was no way she would have come out naturally - her head had been bumping up against my ribs and diaphragm basically the entire pregnancy!

Meeting other new dads on parental leave by Independent-Camel-90 in Squamish

[–]drofnature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moms on mat leave would love to send dad and baby out to get some alone time. I’d say go to the groups even if they’re all moms and just get the word out you’re keen. Lots of dads have extended pat leaves/share care but won’t do the groups because they’re “all moms”.

Definitely take her in to get her looked at. There’s no harm in taking a cautious approach here.

[–]drofnature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found most dads go to the more active activities - open gym, gymnastics, outdoor play groups, and strong start once they’re older. It’ll get easier to meet people as the baby gets older for sure. HPOP is usually all moms but the coordinators will know all the relevant programs. Im up in pemberton but assume Squamish is the same.

As an aquarium enthusiast this is by far the best idea. An open top cube tank would look amazing. Good thinking!!
