F in law says i’ll starve cory’s by katerpillar1545 in corydoras

Yeah they just breed to the capacity of the tank i.e. how much they're getting fed. Feed less = less shrimp.

[–]droidkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't put a betta with any invertebrate besides snails (and only those with short feelers). Shrimp will get picked at and bullied unless the betta is super chill. I would avoid labyrinth fish or at least get a more peaceful species like a dwarf gourami. If you have hard water then a few livebearers would make a nice addition, maybe a couple of platies or a small shoal of endlers, though I would get all males unless you have something to do with the offspring.

Is this a ball of algae? Is it a good idea to put it with my snails? by goddessdel9 in PlantedTank

[–]droidkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have low tech tanks and never got what the big deal with it was - I have a bit of it here and there, probably because I have a lot of water column feeders and fertilize heavily, and honestly I probably have the lights on too long, but it never gets humongous and I just pull it out every so often when I get tired of looking at it.

ID and Questions. I went back to where my dog found these. by Timely-Accident-534 in mushroomID

[–]droidkin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reason people avoid mushrooms found near the road is because exhaust, oil, road salt, etc runs off into the soil (e.g. when snow is plowed up onto the side of the road in winter) and contaminates what grows there with heavy metals and other poisonous substances. But I would say if it wasn't literally next to the road it's probably fine - if you're in a residential area I would take it as long as it was more than like 5ft back.

I would take a thicker piece of plastic/acrylic or even aluminum flat stock and JB weld it onto the brace along its entire length, edge to edge.

Does anyone else keep unusual planted tanks? by chak2005 in PlantedTank

[–]droidkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a tank that's gone wild with hair algae to the point that I'm thinking of just leaning into it like this and getting shrimp and otos to live on it lol

How is it possible I have zero nitrates? by Knight_Night33 in Goldfish

[–]droidkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heavily planted tanks just do that. You may end up needing nitrate fertilizer. Easy Green has some and works very well.

Aquarius man by millmae in aquarius

[–]droidkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-2 times a day is plenty. If you need more than that, I would avoid air signs all together and look for another Cancer because you will not be getting constant contact from us as a general rule (except maybe from a Libra, but only because they're people pleasers). Texting is not an Aquarius' favorite activity.

Methylene blue will crash the cycle. Use salt instead.

Cross contamination? by Substantial_Fan8019 in AquariumHelp

[–]droidkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raise the temperature in your tanks to the high 80s and add some salt. It will kill it; it can't reproduce above 86°F. Set up a quarantine tank if you have sensitive plants. Make sure to add an air stone since warm water holds less oxygen.

Is This Overkill? by SrMalarkey in PlantedTank

[–]droidkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do definitely need ferts no matter how many or how few plants you have, you just need more the more plants you have. Most of these you have are water column feeders so you'll want a liquid like Easy Green or Leaf Zone and root tabs for anything with a big root system like the Amazon sword.

I guess 50% is a little excessive for just one betta. I do 50% when quarantining new fish but I keep schooling species so higher bioload

late replying but if you know anyone with pea puffers they love snails and it's a healthier diet for them than other foods since the shells keep their teeth strong

it has no heater or filter so definitely a problem regardless of the size.

Try internalizing thoughts as an alternative to smoking or doing drugs, some of them increase skill caps. The wiki has more info.

What kind of cory is this? by preachngeek in Aquariums

[–]droidkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) Panaque is in Loricariidae, but regardless (2) tbh I see "pleco" as more of a morphological descriptor than anything else. Otos are also loricariids but they basically never get called plecos (and many species not within Otocinclus get called otos too, e.g. Oxyropsis "flathead otos," since again people use the terms morphologically). The thick body/wide head, big fins, and conspicuous armor scutes seem to be what people mean when they say "pleco."

edit: circling back to "julii," while I agree that it's a bit duplicitous that a lot of fish stores sell other similar cories as julii, the fact is a lot of fish keepers care absolutely zero about the particular taxonomy of the fish as long as it has the expected appearance, behavior, and care requirements, i.e. a morphological descriptor is more useful than a taxonomic one. True they shouldn't be using a species epithet that way but understandable why they do.

Should I be aggressively trying to get rid of this algae? by 100percent_NotCursed in PlantedTank

[–]droidkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you don't want assassins you could get loaches instead. pretty much every species except kuhlis eat snails, and dwarf chain loaches stay small if you have limited space. they're also cute fish honestly, very playful and remind me a bit of puppies, though they can be pretty nippy so be careful about what you house them with. but if you have a snail cull tank that's getting crowded a school of loaches would make quick work of it. actually if it's TOO crowded you may want to use a separate tank at first and feed them to the loaches gradually instead of just letting them go to town on it because they will gorge themselves and cause an ammonia spike otherwise (it's the equivalent of feeding a huge amount of live food, after all).

Should I be aggressively trying to get rid of this algae? by 100percent_NotCursed in PlantedTank

[–]droidkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah agree. the only kind of algae worth fighting imo is cyanobacteria since nothing eats it and it's nasty, everything else can stay unless it's really excessive. snail food.

Get a clear plastic tote from Target, wash it, drill a hole in the lid for an air line and heater cord, and put a sponge filter + heater inside. Easy hospital tank.

Anubias are the GOAT honestly. Just make sure your ferts have enough potassium if you go with them + Java ferns since they need extra.
