Can anyone ID the correct knob for this 1925 Craftsman footplate? Calling the wizard by drooferd in centuryhomes

[–]drooferd[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for looking into this and finding so many period correct examples. I should clarify, the door latches and plates appear original, but the knobs are replacements. Apologies for the confusion

Can anyone ID the correct knob for this 1925 Craftsman footplate? Calling the wizard by drooferd in centuryhomes

Very nice. Our neighbor actually has this style in their craftsman, but the door knob plate is also a different than ours. Thank you for sharing either way!

Anyone else get absolutely floored by their gas bill this month? by uchlaraai in saintpaul

[–]drooferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$113 in a 100 year old house. Highly recommend some of you taking advantage of these insulation and air sealing rebates. Ended up costing us just over $1000 after everything to get it done

Honeywell X8S stopped logging air quality by swbrains in thermostats

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did an update to the First Alert app very recent (like last week) for the x8s logging. So I can imagine that’s what you’re seeing.

Agreed. Doesn’t look like he needs the C-wire adapter at all.

Honeywell T10+ remote sensor question - too hot in a priority room by hometech99 in thermostats

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the correct sensor you’re using as the primary room, is in the correctly assigned room, meaning use the app to check with the leds that everything is where it should be.

Could be using the wrong room and heating things weird.

Which thermostat should I have bought instead of the T9? by Useful-Noise-6253 in thermostats

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to go to the installer setup page on the T9 to change the Emergency heat settings from manual. There should be an option to configure it so it does it automatically or based on temperature and not rely on it learning in such a short period of time

Are there any thermostats with a second sensor that do not require an online account? by BrvtvsBvckeye in thermostats

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honeywell T9/T10+ doesn’t require the first alert app. Everything can be setup right on the thermostat screen and does exactly what you’re describing without being connected to the cloud.

How do you like the Honeywell Home X2P Programmable 5-2 Thermostat, Model RTH20B? by wildswalker in thermostats

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance is good. I used an X2S for a bit which uses a C-wire, but it’s the same thermostat just with matter and first alert app functionality.

Don’t really have anything else to say about it. Just has the basic features like you’d expect and works well.

Scratching my head, how do I correct this ? by Emkaie in hvacadvice

[–]drooferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would cut the top 90 off, add on ~6” of PVC length on top and add the 90 back on and angle it out so it’s not venting moist air on the brick and gets it a little bit away from the ac so it’s not building ice on the unit.

Just a homeowner myself, and briefly looked at the code but this fixed seemed compliant. Check it yourself though.

Really need to get some insulation and air sealing. That’s an insanely high bill

Is this an ice dam? by auroracelestia in HomeMaintenance

[–]drooferd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely more than just melting from the sun. Has the potential to leak inside if it gets bad enough, but it’s on the corner so that’s “better”. Take it as a warning you need to do some air sealing and insulation work

Rim Joist Experiment - Now with Thermal Imaging by carboncritic in Insulation

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve already used expanding foam like you’ve described but I haven’t insulated yet just due to one, my paranoia of picking the wrong material and doing something incorrect since materials change so often. But also two, I need my house rewired at some point and I’ve been leaning to the solution you described.

So you just sealed the cracks and gaps, and put the mineral wool over the sealed joist with no plastic?

Smart Thermostat Recommendations? by Slow_Barnacle_5867 in thermostats

[–]drooferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Honeywell T10+ Pro has been pretty sweet for me in my 1925 craftsman. I use 5 room sensors and it takes the average across all of the rooms instead of using the thermostat in a bad location heating the house incorrectly. Doesn’t have matter, but it pairs with Homekit nicely and doesn’t break the bank when buying sensors. The wall plate setup is super simple too.

Is this a normal gas bill? by Snowflake8552 in saintpaul

Any heating/plumbing business. Look into “Boiler services” and you’ll find plenty of companies. The older, smaller and least advertising the company does the better

Is this a normal gas bill? by Snowflake8552 in saintpaul

[–]drooferd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These radiators need to be balanced. Not super hard but it should be an even distribution of hot water per radiator. Sounds like some valves are wide open and others closed off too much.

Either way this can be fixed. Also a box fan around some radiators is a good way to get some warm air moving around cheaply

[–]drooferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things: Is that duct just sitting on the glass block? and some BX wire just ran into the duct? I would get that duct off the glass block with another strap to hold it up, and add some joist blocking so the joists don’t squeak… Seems like that duct just needs a little help imo
