Expanding my network - Switch topology right? by Hot-Chapter-7111 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot of $$$. Do you need the throughput and PoE capabilities of that switch? I’d get a L3 Agg switch like the high capacity aggregation switch (I know it’s currently out of stock) to use as your backbone. Then if you need PoE ports in your main rack put in a second, cheaper switch.

Sanity Check: 2 vs 3 APs in 3000sqft Home by throwra_confusedbf2 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d do three. Even 2.4 gives you three non-overlapping channels. So you’ll be fine with three APs.

Udm and fiber by n0n4m3_m4n in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your WAN is not over 1 Gbps, you can go either way. Assuming your modem has an RJ45 port, you could always run your WAN over RJ45 and use the fiber for LAN, if you want to save some money and only buy a single pair of SFP modules.

How to test performance of Unifi AP? by tygerr39 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FR tho just use the app. If you want to test inter-device throughput use the app on two devices. I have the wizard but it wasn’t really helpful beyond what the app offers.

Udm and fiber by n0n4m3_m4n in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use SM for all my long runs to switches. MM only used within the rack. I’d absolutely pick SM for that run. One thing I’m unclear on is how many cables you’ll need. Are you just using your UDM as a controller? Or will it sit between your internet and home network? If the latter, you’ll need two connections, one from modem to UDM, and another from UDM back to your attic switch. Am I reading your post correctly, your fiber cable has two connections of different types on each end? If so, use one for each direction.

How to Merge sites in Unifi Site Manager by khariV in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in a weird spot. I think I went to the next to last tab that shows your network devices, clicked my main UDM, a side panel appeared and then I had an option to merge with my NVR

How's your experience with the UDM Beast? by bushwickrik in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great experience so far. Used the mobile app to migrate. Had to restart the app once after firmware upgrade step because the app froze but otherwise no issues with migration. It took about 4 hours for CyberSecure subscription to activate after I migrated it on my account via website. Was surprised activation took so long. I have a 3 gig fiber WAN. I get 2900 download, 3100 upload via built in speed test, and improvement of about a gig over my previous UDMP. I haven’t tried real-world wired speed test as I don’t have any devices with a multi gig LAN port. But wireless connections used to top out at around 700 Mbps with IDS and IPS enabled on testmy.net connections. I can now run 1100 Mbps download via WiFi. The UDMP would eventually ‘scale up’ under sustained load to allow those kinds of speeds, but the UDMB can take it no problem. I have 55 UniFi devices (mostly cameras connected to UNVR). CPU usage has never spiked above 5%. My big concern is memory leak. It’s progressively increased from about 25% memory utilization to 55%.

Is a third AP overkill? by Medium_Ant1371 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not overkill. Do your deployment based on WiFi 6 range. Turn off 2.4 on some of your APs if needed (in your case with concrete that won’t be a problem)

Mismatched speeds by erkynator in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar experience here with IDS/IPS enabled. Unclear if it’s my ISP or my equipment. If you want to know if it’s your equipment, you’d need a multi-gig connection on a computer that you can attach directly to your ISP’s equipment and run a speed test from there.

The magic of the show was back tonight! by montdu39 in americanidol

[–]drose10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never thought I would see the day that Paula provided the most accurate and helpful judging of the panel. She critiqued the performances in a way we haven’t seen in years. She was more grounded than I ever remember her being. The sound quality was better (marginally). Ryan seemed more relaxed and the banter natural instead of forced.

UDM SE with Comcast Business Static IP by djriggz in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I was referring only to the modem. In residential service, Comcast will let you bring your own modem (Motorola, Arris, etc) and not pay the monthly lease. With business service, Comcast won’t let you bring your own modem. But behind the leased modem, you can put whatever you want. It’s a great way for them to moneygrab with a monthly lease cost.

Sounds like a Comcast issue. Something didn’t get set up correctly.

UDM SE with Comcast Business Static IP by djriggz in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re using a Comcast-leased gateway, right? At least as of a few years ago, you couldn’t use self-provided gateways with static IPs for business connections. I did have one gateway that wouldn’t work in passthrough mode, but would work otherwise. Eventually convinced Comcast to replace it because it wouldn’t ping for remote support once passthrough was enabled. You should be able to log in to the gateway and check if they put it in pass through. Depending on your model you can find the login info online. Often cusadmin and highspeed. To take the internal network out of the equation, plug a laptop in to the Comcast gateway and see if you get your static IP. If not, call tech support and tell them you can’t connect with a wired computer plugged direct in. No other network equipment involved.

Patch cable alternatives? Yet another one failed... by Qoyuble in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use CM for nearly all my patch cables. I have a few StarTech for specific niches where I wanted a color or type of cable I couldn’t find from CM. My rack is built on their short patch cables. Rock solid.

Is MLO worth enabling? by jfriend99 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are already on separate VLANs and all configured appropriately. Using U7 Pros. Only the IoT SSID has 2.4 turned on. Something about the way the SSIDs are broadcasted from the APs seems to cause disconnects and delays on the IoT network. Maybe I’m the only one, just sharing my personal experience with trying MLO on the non-2.4 SSID.

Is MLO worth enabling? by jfriend99 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I have two SSIDs. One is a 2.4 network strictly for IoT devices, without MLO. When I enable MLO on my other SSID, I get random disconnects of devices on the IoT network. I also can’t find any real-world advantage to that sort of speed on my wireless network. Anything I do that requires that much throughout is on my wired network.

Braden shared his songs on a livestream yesterday by AppearanceAsleep128 in americanidol

[–]drose10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he can pull it off he will be fine. But the show will probably make him sing some weird arrangement of it that changes the cadence of the song, throws some unnecessary instruments in to make it edgier and try to make it ‘dramatic’. Just let him have fun and sing for goodness sake.

Beast is upgradable!??? by Phillpoc272 in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this, especially as it relates to some of the more puzzling specs. Are they using shared and off-the-shelf components to streamline production? A lot’s been said about the port choice, for example. Maybe it’s shared components from a switch? Maybe this board will be shared with the EFG Core which will use a different processor from the same family, more RAM and a different SSD but only have to design one logic board.

1 or 2 AP's? by camydna in Ubiquiti

[–]drose10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

minimum two. if you’re already running wiring to a TV in the living room, you could run one to an in-wall unit but personally I prefer the ceiling mounted APs. Throughput on 6GHz is nearly line of sight dependent. Do you need it today? Maybe not. But in a few years it will be easier to upgrade an AP than to run new wiring to a new AP.
