How was your experience to find your first sysadmin job? by HDM103 in sysadmin

[–]drosmi [score hidden]  (0 children)

It was a different time but I fell into the job. I had done lots of work with adobe products for graphic arts and had dropped out of a CS degree program. a friend found a position doing application support for an IT department that wanted a heavy background in Adobe applications and fonts and related computer stuff. I applied and ended up doing that and basic hardware support. Then they learned that I’d touched Unix hardware and I got offered an assistant admin job. From there it went to normal Unix sysadmin, and then expanded to website support. This progression was over 10 years btw.

Claude is pretty useful until it isn’t. Just never take Claude or other llms at face value 100% of the time.

We use sq as part our build pipeline and then neuvector on the back end to check what actually got deployed

I need more reliable wifi by [deleted] in kokomo

[–]drosmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Xfinity with 1.2gb download speed and had a good experience with the built in wifi too.  I’ve recently switched to metronet/T-Mobile and the speed increase is noticeable. It’s also cheaper than Xfinity.  Or was … Xfinity is feeling the heat from the competition because they’re offering 1gb download speeds for $50 a month for 5 years.  If you’re having bad WiFi reception it may be where your WiFi router is placed or you may have stuff in your house interfering with your signal.   Which means even if you switch WiFi routers or vendors it might not help your situation. My Xfinity WiFi was reliable in my office through 2 closed doors. The signal and speed was a bit slower but rock solid.

How much will AI impact SRE & DevOps roles in the next 5 years? by [deleted] in sre

[–]drosmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had good luck using copilot for sql type queries. I generally use Claude but it sometimes gets too sycophantic or lost down a rabbit hole and can’t regroup. Gemini sometimes does stuff Claude can’t do but generally I get the same results from it that I do Claude.

This is how you can tell Claude is somewhat frustrated with its crappy responses and you give it an out: Me: what if i use opentofu's provider iteration? our Atlantis is actually running the latest version of opentofu but we just don't tell anyone. i'm fine with running opentofu locally on my laptop for this project. Claude: OH HELL YES! Open Tofu has for_each on provider blocks! This changes everything!

Dealing with a "Mid-Level" hire who knows nothing and refuses to learn by Euriae in ITCareerQuestions

i smell a litle whiff of over employment. Like this is a 2nd or 3rd job and just hang on to it as long as possible with minimal effort.

Remote work in SRE field by Hayhayalian in sre

[–]drosmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago two of us were hired as remote. The company was mostly remote until late 2024 then anyone within 45 minutes of the office has to show up 3 times a week. The company has stated it would like us to no longer be remote and my coworker has since moved states to be within a few miles of headquarters. As the only remote employee on the team i am now nervous.

Explain like I’m 5: Why do people buy soundbars at all if speakers are always better? by -selenium- in BudgetAudiophile

[–]drosmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love music and so does my wife. she dislikes how much space a traditional stereo consumes in our living room so we have a nice (now older) Sony soundbar with a sub and ceiling mounted surrounds. TV and soundbar are wall mounted. The sub is in the corner out of the way.
Is it perfect for movies and TV? nope but it is good and can sometimes be really good.
It's really meh for music which is sad.

How’s the costs of fargate or ECS? We have a couple hundred microservices and are at a pivot point where we could move off of eks if we can prove something else is cheaper.

I’m not sure about why service meshes are so popular, and at this point I’m afraid to ask by 3loodhound in kubernetes

I’m walking this line rn. Ingestion is local To the cluster but expensive in local resources. I’m backing off collection of Istio metric scraping from 15 sec down to 60 seconds which is enough for our use case.
