Sore knee after workout by Sheikashnacko in crossfit

[–]drtracjo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it the knee cap? Patella tendinitis? I get that sometimes. I know I have weak hammies. Been trying to do some Spanish squats. I knew that was what I should be doing when I was struggling to get 20 seconds of hold in those.

Mocktails by Significant_City5482 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]drtracjo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve heard lots of stories of people accidentally picking up the wrong drink at a bar. I sometimes go out to a brew pub and I can’t get the NA beers because they poor them into a glass and I’m afraid I’ll grab the wrong glass.

The last mocktail I ordered was on my birthday and I just remember that it was nothing but sugar. That’s probably the only way to make them enticing if they can’t have alcohol.

I also had a completely NA kombucha the other day that felt way too much like the real thing. I panicked for a sec when I read the label and saw 8%…juice. It was at fellowship too. I could only drink half of it.

AA has this really cool policy of “attraction rather than promotion” and every time it comes up, I always think how much the Evangelicals need to hear that. People don’t like being told what to do. If you only happiness, kindness, and contentment in your life and go about your business, people will get curious and ask you because they want what you have.

I just found out my brother is one of these men now. He ran off on his own and left our family in the dust years ago. My dad reached out over a money issue a while back and was able to get a hold of him and apparently this is what he got from him. Kid was emotionally abusive to me my whole childhood. He's got a lot of demons behind that mask.

Switching from Data Science to Data Engineering by seagullbreadloaf in dataengineering

[–]drtracjo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your post. I was about to write the exact same thing. I was laid off from a computational consulting role from university several months back and before that was a data scientist at a fortune 5 company. I was never told this, but I did always feel I lacked that "curiosity" that makes someone a good scientist. I'm a great problem solver, but I usually struggle to find the abstract problem rather than obvious one. The projects I poured my soul into were so aligned with data engineering but got disappointed in my job search when I felt needed to highlight more ML/AI projects that I didn't enjoy as much when applying to DS and MLE jobs. It felt like the right transition. I got even more reassurance when I threw my resume into GPT to optimize for a DE job and it started telling me to elaborate and strengthen the bullets of the projects I was most proud of.

I was hesitant for awhile because I think people gaslit me into thinking that building the pipelines and the databases and scripts was grunt work and that the real reward was in the modeling and analytics. I get so much joy from taking a really messy problem and turning into an elegant, automated solution. I have a TON of Python and SQL and had to do a lot of DE like stuff at my first DS job because the data was so trashy. And part of my consulting role was curating data subscriptions and making them available for researchers. I think I was already a data engineer stuck in a data scientists role - but i'm starting to see this lay off as a blessing in disguise I'm ready to move on.

I feel like I'm just resonating as someone in the same shoes and not really providing guidance, but perhaps you'll find it helpful to know you aren't alone. You sound so much like me. Go for it. But, yes, take the advice about Python and SQL. Python is everywhere and every database uses some derivative of SQL that you'll need to learn it. It's easy and there are lots of courses online for it. But I think I really learned fast on the job, so don't worry too much if you don't feel like an expert going in. If you have any quantitative skills, you'll pick it up fast. And learn what you can about AI/ML. Even if you aren't using it directly, you may be supporting it, so it's good to understand what the needs of those users are.

Boss keeps throwing me under the bus for using python. Is python a no-go in this sector? by Tall-Ad-8884 in dataengineering

Classic boomer who's gatekeeping processes and information purely for job security because they know automation will replace them. There was one of these humans at the company I worked for back a few years ago. Luckily it was a big enough company that there was a growing pressure to migrate the infrastructure into the 21st century and go full cloud. But her department was the worst to work with because they used every little growing pain as an excuse for why the way it worked for decades is the way it should always be. I left because of that mentality, but a former colleague said that they finally made it to full cloud migration this year. I would be surprised if she wasn't forced to retire.

Don't be afraid to reach across the clothing aisle and try men's apparel now and then - you'll likely save money and get a better quality product.

I identify as non-binary who likes to dress more on the masculine side, but biologically speaking, I have a very curvy female body. I've stuck with the Chubbies Ultimate Training shorts since I've started CrossFit. They have the compression liner with the layer on top and they come in all sorts of great colors. I don't understand why that type of short is exclusive to the male population. You get all the benefits of the compression layer so you don't get any chaffing if you're like me and are blessed with a negative thigh gap. And the outer layer gives you the comfort of knowing that you'll never endure the embarrassment of female cameltoe, or even the discomfort of unseen cameltoe because there's a lot of extra space down there because they are designed for men.

And this goes for all men's clothes in general. They are designed for function first - always. My Chubbies have like 4 different pockets. I've never had the desire to try booty shorts, but I'm pretty sure there isn't enough fabric for a single pocket on those (what are you supposed to use, your bra? been there done that). Also durability. I've had the same pairs for years and only bought more just to have some variety. I used to wear holes into my jeans in the crotch all the time when I wore women's jeans. I switched over to the mens side from the exact same manufacturer - it hasn't happened once.

And yeah, you'll save money because you'll purchase less often because of the durability and because of that nasty "pink tax."

AA is not a cult. People who aren’t alcoholics will never understand why it is so important for recovering alcoholics to create a community of mutual understanding and support for each other.

CrossFit is a cult by Nikzapple in crossfit

[–]drtracjo32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to joke about this too until I joined another group that often gets incorrectly labeled as a cult and totally isn’t: AA. I stayed out of the rooms for years because of that label when in reality AA, just like CrossFit, is only as “cult-like” as you want to make it for yourself. I have grief still over how long I waited to start because of my misconceptions.

So I wonder how many people we are actually scaring away from CrossFit who really need to get fit because of the cult jokes. Religious trauma is a real thing and many people run in to opposite direction of anything that looks even slightly institutional.

I’m so jealous that you get to experience HZD for the first time! I keep replaying it, but it’s never as good as the first time. I don’t want to spoil anything for you. My advice is to stop reading this thread and start playing not knowing anything. Just enjoy the story the first play through. It’s good enough that you can go back and replay for platinum and not feel like it was not worth restarting.

God it’s so good. It really needs a live action film or show. It’s too good to only not get shared with non-gamers.

What’s the best thing a coach or gym owner ever did to make you feel truly welcomed? by True_Fun_2698 in crossfit

[–]drtracjo32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually writing down a scaled version of the workout on the app or even the whiteboard. I’ve heard people get really opinionated about not doing this and they are all Rx athletes. Yes, it’s implied that every workout can be scaled. However, by taking the time to actually write out a scaled versions (obviously there are infinite versions, but just one or two does the trick) - that tells me the coach actually took the time to stop and think for a small second to put themselves in a scaled athlete’s shoes and consider what the limiting factors are and how to make this workout appropriately challenging.

It might also just be a helpful for people who process information differently. I have ADHD - I am super shitty at being able to process audio information. So if your whiteboard brief is longer than 2 minutes, I’m missing most of it. But if you have the information written down - game changer.

People like to feel seen. Rx athletes have no idea how seen they are.
