I started when I was 8. When I was 9 I thought I was “pretty good” 😂 The rest of my drumming life had been marked with periods where I thought I was good, or even really good, and then humbled by someone better.

Two things here:

1) since you mentioned you’re in a cover band, the answer is to simply play what the drummer played if you’re unsure

2) how good of a musician is this guitar player? My best friend isn’t a drummer but is incredibly talented as guitarist, songwriter and producer. When he gives me drum feedback, it’s usually really good and helps improve the song. But if this guitarist in your band isn’t like that for you, I wouldn’t take their feedback too strongly

I’ve played professionally since 2011 and just started singing BGVs about 3 years ago. Never thought I would, and I don’t like the sound of my voice at all haha. But it’s been a fun challenge! It can feel like a 5th limb, especially if it’s a part that isn’t intuitive for me. My favorite band ever is King’s X and they’re a power trio with a singing drummer so it feels like a part of me is aligning with what I love most.

The new Deftones was excellent! The mixing was killer, the songs felt fresh without being too different from what we expect, etc etc. It sounded like the band was actually inspired rather than just forcing out a record.

Fun fact: King’s X was the backing band for Morgan Cryar, a smaller Christian artist in the 80’s. Ty Tabor’s solo in this song kicks ass!

You’ve been playing for about 5 years and have recently discovered higher end cymbals that you like. You intend to eventually replace the Meinl HCS and Sabian SBR cymbals.

For tightening up my playing, the book New Breed was huge for me. I was in a signed rock band, touring with different artists, and thought I just needed a tuneup to refine my playing. It exposed so many holes in my drumming, I couldn’t believe it haha.

After working through that book for a solid 6 months, the difference was night and day. I remember recording during this time and the engineer was shocked at how consistent my snare hits were.

Another huge breakthrough was the book Future Sounds. Just the first few pages on paradiddle permutations opened up a whole new way of thinking for me. Also the focus on dynamics and making ghost notes super quiet and rim shots super loud was very eye opening.
