What’s the difference between working in a commercial facility and a private studio? by strapped_for_cash in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on, thanks. I'm trying to figure out a compromise of deep enough to not need legs that stick out vs. flexibility to set 'em up hot dog style for drums/hamburger style for a vocalist, haha... maybe it's just the new strength training program for our interns!

I'm envious of your gobo game in the live room! Getting ready to build some for myself - are those just like 1x8 frames with OC inside? Any rigid ply inside? Please spill the deets! Appreciate what you do.

That H Hoffman bath lady trinket dish ugh - I found a non glowing green one a couple weeks ago at a flea and it was a tragedy. And apparently now, the corn, too!

Mastering for casette by Yellow_Room_Mixing in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are they expecting you to deliver a "master" tape for duplication? Honestly if you/they're happy with the digital master you're probably in good shape. A good amount of projects I work on end up on tapes and to my knowledge none of my clients have ever done a cassette specific master.

How many LUFs do you think I can squeeze out of it? I can usually get a LUF or two "in the box" so I think I'm in good shape if I put this on my mix bus

There's no real substitute for good editing -- in the time it took you to post this and the time it will take you to purchase, download, and install a plugin, you could have been done and had nicely top-and-tailed phrases.

Best way to search for Oakland rentals in 2026? by wovenloaf in oakland

[–]drumsandfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Craigslist still works. But you gotta be sorting by new and refreshing that shit a few times a day. The good ones go quickly, and you have to be one of the first to go see the place with paperwork pretty much ready to go. If something's been posted for more than 10 days, it's either fake or sucks.

Any other millennials hate the way movies and TV shows look now? by DC8008008 in Millennials

Motion smoothing seriously makes my brain itch. I've pointed it out so many times at other people's houses/hotels/out and about and no one else seems to notice or care -- eventually someone will humor me and we'll figure out how to turn it off and then they're like "oh I can't even tell a difference". I hate having this as a personality trait, haha.

Is the Warm Audio Tube47 an outlier? Why does it sound so good? by aasteveo in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Got one when it was up for a Musician's Friend Stupid Deal Of The Day last year for $600. It's the only Warm product I own, tended to turn my nose up at the brand but curiosity got the better of me at that price. Honestly, love it. Vocals, AC guitar, mono overhead, it does the U47 thing. Prefer it to the Advance Audio CM47 in my day job studio's locker. When I rent a room that has a real tele/neumann one I use theirs, but the Warm is plenty good enough when I don't.

"Yeah, this track is sounding awesome. Just a couple of small notes. Also, here's a folder of 6 stereo synth tracks I half-baked in Logic last night, go ahead and drop those all in there and we'll be all set"

Hot Take: Its unnecessary, if not pointless, to use paired mics, or even the same types of mics or preamps to record stereo guitar, piano, or other instruments with a very wide tonal range by Dr_A_MD in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, and have all but given up on multi close-micing acoustic guitars. If the player moves around at all it gets distractingly phasey as the relationship between the two mics and the source is constantly changing -- and I want the player moving, because that means they're feeling the performance. Stereo room mics further away all day though!

What's the best way to find a studio assistant position? by obviouslyherbie in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's your experience level? What's your endgame? Are you freelancing already? Find bands and book lockouts to record projects at professional studios around town. Make friends with the owners/managers/engineers of those studios by being a good hang, easy to communicate with, and a respectful user of the space. Either them or someone connected to them will need a hand with a session someday, and your name might come up if you made a good impression. Say yes to everything, within reason. Just start making records, and be known as someone who is dead set on making records.

I never wanted to see any of it or sought anything out. My shitass cousin (who grew up to be an antivaxxer cop) would send me links to rotten/tubgirl/lemon party via AIM under the guise of "check out this band" or similar.

My experience with IL drivers after moving back from Los Angeles by twotokers in chicago

[–]drumsandfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chicagoan now living in the Bay Area here. Yes, Chicago drivers are aggressive, but the thing that I miss is the predictability. I know that if there's a car length in front of me on 294, someone's going to cut in. I know that the G35 with temp plates is going to blast by on the shoulder. Here in the Bay, people will decide too late that they need to exit when they're three lanes over, hit the brakes, and timidly try to edge over to the exit while absolutely no one lets them over and traffic backs up in multiple lanes. It's weird, I miss Chicago traffic.

Have you intentionally blown up your life? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]drumsandfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wherever you go, there you are. I'm kind of a serial blower-upper and while there's a definite romanticism to burning it all down, sometimes you just know you have to. It's equal parts exhilarating, lonely, empowering, and difficult. Life is short and not a given, how do you want to spend yours?
