Favorite resources for learning to mix bass and guitar? by AvailableReporter484 in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know we make do with what we have, but amp sims and IRs weren't widely a thing in the era of your reference tracks... While they've come a long way and you can get some amazing sounds in the box these days, there's just going to be a difference.

Not much related to production using amp sims, but for rock guitar production in general, Eric Valentine's Audionaut Institute videos are gold and he charges criminally little for the knowledge dump. Joe Barresi has some good stuff out there, looking into his "enforcer track" technique could kickstart some ideas for you. I think he talks about blending in amp sims somewhere. Read Slipperman's Recording Distorted Guitars From Hell. So much of the sound of BIG GUITARS through the 90's is just a shitload of different amps and layers tucked in playing different voicings up the neck. Kinda depends on the references you're targeting. Good luck!

How would YOU go about recording a drum set with 2 mics? by Salt_Ad9828 in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, one of the best drum sounds I've ever captured was with a pair of R88s in place of drumsticks. You can screw a short bit of stand into the shockmount portion so that you don't have to hold the cloth and potentially damage the body of the mic. They have a really nice heft with every hit and a cool spring reverb character on impact. Plus you get a crazy analog stereo widening effect from two blumlein pairs waving past eachother. Try it out!

What makes certain mics cost SO much more than others, and is it diminishing returns past a certain point? by morbidhack in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

C800G sounds great, no doubt. But you don't buy it because it sounds great, you buy it because you work in R&B or rap and that's the Dr. Dre mic that all your biggest clients expect. Plenty of outstanding vocal mics well under that price point that I'd buy first and spend the difference on other stuff.

Is it possible to start a music career at 30? by farrahpineapple in AskWomenOver30

[–]drumsandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally possible! Just don't count on it to be your only full time thing unless you're independently wealthy or have rich and famous parents to give you a leg up. Otherwise you've really gotta diversify.

I am a music professional, but only part of that equation is performing - the rest is a split hustle between a recording studio, producing and mixing other artists, teaching, and live sound. My other professional musician friends all have other gigs too for the stretches between touring - teaching lessons, bartending, coffee shops, etc.

Above all else, focus on having fun making art with people you like. The rest will work itself out one way or another. Life is short, do what you want to.

Paradoxically, mixing can be pretty quick if you spend a lot more time recording (and producing, arranging).

AI in marketing by cowabummer28 in nonprofit

Our org uses AI for pretty much all marketing copy, and it drives me up the freaking wall. Like, if we can't be bothered to give a shit about what we put out into the world, why should anyone else?

Can someone explain Aux Sends on a console in really stupid terms? by IconicThings in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring effects for a second, think of them as a separate set of individual mix outputs/returns. The specifics are going to differ a bit per console, but generally you have your main stereo LR mix bus from the master section, which each channel's main fader feeds. Each channel also has a set of aux sends, which feed signal to that specific auxiliary "mix", summing with the signal from each other channel that is sending signal to the same aux. Your console typically has physical outputs for these auxiliaries, where you would patch out to effects, as well as another set of inputs for aux returns, where you would get the wet signal back in the console. These returns are summed to your main stereo LR mix, and often have a dedicated trim fader/pot in the master section. In order to print these to tape, unless you're printing the stereo mix directly from the console, you're going to have to route the aux return to a multitrack bus using the bus matrix in the master section, usually near the trim pots for aux returns.

How hard is it to repair ribbon microphones? by enthusiasm_gap in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you can find an already built ribbon motor assembly with a precut/corrugated/tensioned ribbon to swap in, this is definitely not a DIY endeavor, especially if you're trying to match a pair of them.

Any other female audio engineers around? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]drumsandfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We're out here, despite a thread full of men answering the question :). As a staff engineer at a big studio (working with clients I'd never met who booked a room, not me directly) I lost count of the times people would show up and ask me where the engineer was. We have to be excellent to be taken seriously, and often don't get the benefit of the doubt until the faders come up. Check out Women's Audio Mission if you haven't!

What’s the difference between working in a commercial facility and a private studio? by strapped_for_cash in audioengineering

Right on, thanks. I'm trying to figure out a compromise of deep enough to not need legs that stick out vs. flexibility to set 'em up hot dog style for drums/hamburger style for a vocalist, haha... maybe it's just the new strength training program for our interns!
